The work of Anthony Burril l always catches the eye. He uses strong colours to add weight to sharp mantras. Bossy in tone, they brim with far too much determination to ever be categorized as self-help, as inspiring as they may be. Mystery dance duo, Acid Washed , have been the worthy recipients of Mr Burrill's visual expertise. The above video serves as a delectable introduction to the space disco wares peddled by these Parisians. General Motors, Detroit, America is unashamedly epic. The above video is the only [...]

Barbarella - The Queen Of Love B-side of "Move In Do It", Italy, Fremus Records, year not listed. Barbarella (real name Virna Bonino) was an Italian porn star born in Torino. In Rome, she got recruited by producer Riccardo Schicchi into his notorious Diva Futura stable, the home of local legends Moana Pozzi and Ilona "Cicciolina" Staller. During the mid 80's signorina Barbarella's work was mainly dumped direct to video. Perhaps due to extensive facelifts, the starlet can occasionally still be seen guest [...]
Steel Panther iTunes single of the week Steel Panther 's single " Death To All But Metal " is being featured as the iTunes Single of the Week .

I've been feeling unsafe when I venture out at night lately and I'm chalking it up to the recent presence of Crunkcore and Christian metal in Portland. While scouring the internet for a good place to purchase personal defense weapons, I came across something infinitely more exciting than a Panther Stun Gun: Hayes Carll 's two night stand at the Aladdin Theater on January 19th and 20th! Hooray! Let him lead us back to the shelter of our rowdy Americana roots. Hayes Carll sort of sounds like electric Bob Dylan meets Garth Brooks, but more Texas. Ok, [...]

Formed: 2007 in San Francisco Members: Christopher Owens and Chet "JR" White. Latest release: Girls' debut, Album, came out this fall on True Panther records. Why you care: Girls' back story is almost too good to be true: Frontman and songwriter Christopher Owens grew up as a member of the Children of God cult in Florida (no, really) and spent much of his childhood as a vagabond, living for stints in Europe and Puerto Rico. It's rumored his mother was among women followers used by [...]

Making the best of this bummer called life. IMAGE: OK PONY [RAINY DAY] If the tone of Portland noise-folk trio Meth Teeth's debut full-length, Everything Went Wrong, seems a tad pessimistic, there are good reasons for that. For starters, the album's recording process nearly destroyed the band. It took three full tries to get it done, after the first two were interrupted by everything from members quitting to malfunctioning equipment. If the third attempt had failed, the group was ready to just scrap the whole thing. [...]
If you don't know Zeds Dead by now, you must be under a fuckin rock musically. From opening up for: Jack Beats, Kill the Noise, 12th Planet, Felix Cartal, and Bombaman to their MONSTER remix of Barletta's "Panther" that dropped mid summer on Intellegenix, these guys have been non-stop blowing up everything they touch. That's a large feat considering they kicked things off as a group at the beginning of the summer... But it doesn't stop there. Now Hooks and DC have yet another accomplishment to be proud of. Their remix of Blue Foundation's [...]

You know what feature I've missed most on LocalCut the last, oh, six weeks since things haven't been working properly? Random Video Tuesday. In honor of my favorite neglected weekly online column—and the fact that most of the LC kinks have been fixed—I'd like to share a little something with you: the (sorta) new video for May Ling's bouncy "New Year," which is way more AWESOME than it is random. There's really no use in describing this, other than saying "New Year" is over three minutes of singer Alberta Poon (you might know her from Wet Confetti and [...]

The holidays are just around the corner. No, really, I'm not messing with you. It's Thanksgiving in just nine days! (please don't try to email me on Black Friday, I'll be passed out in a pile of gravy). So that also means it's time to bust out all your favorite Xmas and Hanukkah sweaters and get ready to rock out with your cello out. For the second straight year, the Portland Cello Project—you might have seen its lively tour blog around these parts—is hosting a big ol' holiday bash. Only instead of an awkward gathering of relatives, this [...]

Nippy In The Shade mp3 Maxwell Panther (demo for Sound is a Place EP) hop over to his bandcamp.com page and pay-what-you-will for this cool little EP Lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi, lo-fi.... That's what greets you when you hit Maxwell Panther's MySpace page . And unlike many (if not most) of the new music that gets labeled as lo-fi, his stuff really is lo-fi. It's just his guitar and him. Sometimes he turns the reverb up a bit, sometimes the distortion [...]

This looks like a REALLY cool project: " Trailer for independent documentary film on Japanese American Richard Aoki, who was a Field Marshall in the Black Panther Party in Oakland, CA. " Unfortunately I didn't post this in time to help pub the premiere this past Thursday. I know there's probably gonna be some conservatives, especially Michelle Malkin , who will be up in arms when they get wind of this project though! Online: Aoki Film - website [...]

Tongue-in-cheek or not, Steel Panther's Feel the Steel is so good it's gonna make a serious run for inclusion in my year-end list. Everything about it is just done so well... everything! I know my man Anso is down with the Panther too. Can't wait to see these guys play when I hit up L.A. [...]

Here's an act that I really liked back in the late 80's and into the 90's. They were a folk duo with a drum machine called Timbuk 3. I only first heard them in 1986 when the late WBCN used to play their first single "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades." For years, and thankfully I've broken myself of this habit, folks used to ask me how I was doing and I'd say "Doin' alright, gettin' good grades" as in "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades." This band always had clever wordplay and I have always [...]
