Next Big Thing: MNDR

ISAORA A/W '09 LAUNCH VIDEO
Caps-locked NYC-via-L.A. DJ/singer MNDR (real name: Amanda Warner) has been steadily building a Lady-Gaga-meets-Santigold buzz for her smart beats and blow-'em-away live sets. Details and tracks are scarce on her MySpace page , but "Fade to Black" (as can be heard on JeffMix2010.01.24 ) and the slowed-down, brilliant left turn "I Go Away" (promo video below) show huge, OMG upside. THE SOFT PACK: THE SOFT PACK

The appeal of songs such as "C'mon" and "Answer To Yourself" is that they are not sung by cloying children, not emo and sad and sensitive. Fuck that baby shit.

our soft packs

our soft packs cred: rachel carr Hey, so last weekend we had Avi Buffalo and The Soft Pack (previously The Muslims) play a show in our dear sweet FMLY Mansion. We showed you a super rad video of Avi Buffalo the following day, but Gorilla vs Bear and Brooklyn Vegan somehow captured a bit more than we did. Peep a video on GvB here and lots o' pics (like the one above) here .

Covers That Don't Suck

Covers That Don't Suck In the past month there have been some really great covers emerge. Phoenix doing Bob Dylan is as good as anything on Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Jay Reatard's death brought an old cover out back to prominence, Major Lazer have added a whole new depth to a Beyonce track and lo fi indie rockers Little Girls have a stunning take on a new Beach House track. Enjoy these and please feel free to link to your favorite covers in the comments. Major Lazer - HALO (Beyonce Cover) Solange Knowles - Stillness [...]

Live: The Magnetic Fields

Live: The Magnetic Fields Frank Yang If I'm being totally honest, I wasn't that excited for last night's Magnetic Fields show at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. After all, their last few records didn't especially bowl me over and I was feeling somewhat pessimistic about what to expect from a performer who's very much on record as being disdainful of the entire phenomenon of live performance. I had seen them before at their last visit to Toronto in July 2004 and while my memories of that show are fond, I couldn't say it was an especially [...]

Video Exclusive: The Soft Pack Make A Video

videothing short 2min30sec.mp4
Our favorite fish-eyed documentarian, Videothing , recently shot a different kind of video thing. Specifically – a video for the single, "C'mon," by our bros in The Soft Pack . They shot it entirely in what looks like somebody's parents' garage in SoCal using only a green screen (that doubled as a cape) and a purple kaleidoscopic lens plastered with santa stickers. And judging by the use of awesome chroma key backgrounds (a bunch of oranges, a Christmas sweater vest, and a facebook page), this is going to be a pretty sweet vid!

David Guetta Feat. Kid Cudi – "Memories" Video

David Guetta Feat. Kid Cudi – "Memories" Video On the heels of his SBs and a new HBO show , Kid Cudi drops another low-budget visual, this time for his solo slice from David Guetta's debut, One Love . The up-tempo nature of this vibrant, club-ready bouncer is definitely not for everyone, but good enough to keep Cudder full steam ahead of the pack on Clear Channel. When I grow up, I want to be one of these producers like Dave Guetta or Tiësto that only creates overly-simple, drum-heavy beats at [...]

The Soft Pack - C'mon (clip)

Shapeless

Shapeless Dmitry Fyodorov is now back from the dark depths of modern technology! The 1st of March the long awaited debut album from Dmitry Fyodorov is released, called Shapeless . First appetizer was the track Coconut Office , dated the globe late 2009 and slaughtered its way through the web waves. Dmitry not only drops Shapeless , he's additionally releasing a drum sequencer based on samples used on Fyodorov's album. Each track on the album has its own sample pack. This makes it easy for anyone to create their own instant remixes of Dmitry Fyodorov's [...]

Introducing.. MiniBoone - Big Changes EP

(Rock/Indie Pop/Avant-Garde) MiniBoone are a Brooklyn band who jumped out at me during my usual routine inbox sift a couple of weeks back with a friendly email (believe, me that's more than a lot of bands) and an enticing name drop of Phil Spector and Talking Heads. It was definitely this which led me to download their January 25th released EP 'Big Changes' which incidentally was out on Drug Front Records that very day. They play avant-garde indie pop music with a fairly standard set up, there's no synthesisers or crazy electronic sounds which [...]

annuals - "sweet sister" ep

annuals - "sweet sister" ep I have always wished and hoped that Annuals were a band that I could feel super passionately about, the way I do with some. Logic would dictate that I would, since there is really nothing NOT charming and wonderful about their new EP "Sweet Sister," but somehow my mind just isn't blown away by this. So while I won't proclaim the new five track EP the most awesome thing ever (and none of these tracks really pack quite the punch that most of their debut Be He Me delivered not so long ago), it is [...]

VIDEO: The Soft Pack, "C'mon"

Video is from the band's excellent debut LP, The Soft Pack , which I strongly recommend you pick up here if you haven't done so already. If you're in Chicago, be sure and catch the band at the Empty Bottle on Friday, April 9th (with Male Bonding and Beaters ). And, yes, that's sadly the same night as Drive-By Truckers at the Vic. (Via our Pitchfork overlords.)

[Video] The Soft Pack: "C'mon"

I've been really enjoying The Soft Pack's latest LP, full of rambuctious and infectious energy reminiscent of adolescent days when your ears weren't as refined and merely reacted to the music. For such a high energy sound, they've made a black and white video matching well with the rough garage punk roots The Soft Pack pull from.
