Die musikalische Überwindung von Barrieren zwischen Israelis und Palästinensern - hier vertreten durch das Projekt 'Boogie Balagan'. BARRIER-BREAKING ROCK'N ROLL 'BOOGIE BALAGAN' BLENDS MIDDLE EASTERN VIBES WITH EXHILARATING ROCK'N ROLL TO CONVEY THEIR MESSAGE OF PEACE AND BREAK DOWN CULTURAL, LINGUSTIC AND PHYSICAL BARRIERS IN THE MIDDLE EAST. In the autoproclaimed Palestlsraeli duo Boogie Balagan, psychedelic rock'n'roll meets cool Middle Eastern vibes. Their first album 'Lamentation Walloo' is a message of peace and multiculturalism. First, imagine voices that combine Julio Iglesias drinking straight tequilas and Joe Strummer high on harissa. Then, imagine a Mediterranean Jimmy Page torturing his [...]

Sorry for the short post, but things have been a little hectic in my life lately, what with taking 2 classes, working full-time, driving 80 miles a day between work and class, writing, running , writing more, running more, doing research for my grad school thesis, writing, reading , drinking a little , getting drunken calls from crazy girls in Detroit (don't ask), and... oh yeah, blogging . But here are some new songs that have caught my fancy lately, so check them out. I wish I had more time to detail them in detail, but [...]
One listen to Boston's Hallelujah The Hills and you realize it's one of those bands you can't help but love. Their amazing lo-fi indie pop, complimented by big band instrumentation along with the quality singer/song writer lyricism of lead man Ryan Walsh all combine to create what, to me, defines what indie rock was meant to be. With the recent release of their second album Colonial Drones , Hallelujah The Hills shows how much they have really grown as a band since their debut album The [...]

Another decent week for new music releases. Here is part II for the week of 09-22-09. Two years after releasing their debut Fourteen Autumns And Fifteen Winters , Glasgow's The Twilight Sad release their new LP Forget The Night Ahead on the Fat Cat Label. Forget further expands the sound that the band developed on their debut release. The sound is large, expansive and loud. James Graham's Scottish accent is stronger yet on this new LP. The guitar noise, pounding drums underscoring hidden melodies is in full force here. Influences can be felt [...]

Without a doubt, Washington, D.C's Roofwalkers brand of guitar-driven melodic rock is some of the most addictive music I've heard. The music by the six-piece band formerly known as Pagoda is precise, meticulous, dreamy and reflective. Their 10-track debut self-titled album was two years in the making, and in what should be one-hell-of-a-show will open for Vandaveer at DC's The Black Cat . Roofwalkers music is decidedly subtle but it's lasting. There aren't too many bands that can take this genre [...]

DC's Roofwalkers release their self-titled debut album on August 25, 2009 through Taps and Dies Records. Roofwalkers was recorded between 2006 and 2008 at various locations including Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA. Production and engineering work was done by Chad Clark (Beauty Pill, Dismemberment Plan, Fugazi) and by band member, TJ Lipple (who is also in Aloha and Mary Timony's new band, Soft Power). Before changing their name from Pagoda to Roofwalkers, the band released both an LP (Dearly Departed) and an EP (Seven Nights). Roofwalkers will open for Vandaveer at The Black Cat on Thursday, August [...]

On September 22nd, Misra Records will release the second album from Boston's Hallelujah the Hills . What is unique about this six piece group (David Bentley - cello, guitar, Elio DeLuca - keys, guitar, samples, Matthew Glover - drums, Brian Rutledge - horns & moog, Ryan Walsh - geetar, sing and Nicholas Ward - bass) is the way merge creative writing and complex instrumentation. Colonial Drones finds Ryan Walsh in top form lyrically, but also in the amount of support he receives musically. These are thoughtful pieces of Americana soul, but there are just enough moments of [...]

They come from Boston and number six. In 2007 they released their debut album in the shape of "Collective Psychosis Begone". Now, Hallelujah The Hills will release their second record. "Colonial Drones" contains 13 tracks and was produced by lead vocalist Ryan Walsh. The band's sound has been described as passion charged Indie rock. Full of sweeping guitars and complex lyrics, with the added bonus of strings. In the same sonic arena as their good friends Titus Andronicus , which can't be a bad thing. Misra Records release Colonial Drones on September [...]
Henrietta's Lovers - Monkey Barrs 1990 Henrietta's Lovers were a part of the same late '80s Gainesville scene that included NDolphin and Aleka's Attic, although nowhere near as popular as either. They shared the stage with both bands and were also on a compilation (Gainesville Can't Dance) with both bands. Led by charismatic frontman and trumpet player Alexander Davidowski, the band was formed at the University of Florida in 1988. The band didn't fit into any particular scene, as their sound was an odd collision of Joy Division moodiness, jazz-funk, and Davidowski's [...]

[photo courtesy of frankd - more here ] Coyote Eyes were one of the two local band to perform at the NYCTaper event at Monster Island two Fridays ago. We found this excellent band through the work of others - most notably the Ear Farm music blog. Their recorded songs are angular but melodic, and mix a variety of interesting influences. But live, Coyote Eyes are three fluent players with a ferocious stage energy. As I told Manny after the show, [...]

An argument could be made that the world is being bombarded with TOO many festival choices. It's a given that should you grace (or live in approximation to) a metropolis, you're going to find at least one festival that draws your attention, takes your money, and drives you to get out the doors and into the crowds. The purpose of these festivals, no matter the impression, is to unite fans and artists into one large consortium--it's a chance for a laundry list of your favorites to play in one place during designated time frames. As it [...]

I have returned! My two weeks in Japan were the longest two weeks of my life. I know that phrase is normally used negatively, but I meant it in a good way. I saw things I never knew existed, and met people I had only vaguely heard about. It's a completely different culture, and was an eye-opening experience to say the least. For those who are curious, this is the five-storied pagoda at the Toji Temple in Kyoto. It is the tallest pagoda in Japan, measuring in at 187 feet, and it [...]
New York City's Matteah Baim released her second album, Laughing Boy , back in March. The video for the song "The Pagoda," was created by artist, Sam Falls (www.samfalls.com). http://www.myspace.com/matteah baim

Matteah Baim - Laughing Boy 6/10 Best known for working along side CoCoRosie's Sierra Casady in the 'pansy metal' band Metallic Falcons, Metteah Baim has gone solo due to the band's permanent hiatus. New York based Baim has put her head to ground, drawing inspiration from her surroundings to construct an album which draws heavily from nature. Laughing Boy opens with the mental picture of a dense landscape, surrounded by steep cliff faces and tall crooked poplar trees. 'Pagoda' has a wisdom that floats in the breeze, like a dying leaf falling to [...]
