A new American indie pop label that gives away free music every Friday? Yes. We scour the world for the greatest new songs so you don't have to. No stone is left unturned. You are a child, and we are your parents. This is the promise of Holiday Records , one of our favorite DIY labels. We've gotten several cool EP's and whatnots so far in 2010 and it has been a shame we haven't given them the attention they so rightfully deserve. Perhaps we shall remedy that by making this Holiday Records Week at [...]

Saturdays on EMPT are usually reserved for Kevin Casey's sampled Saturday's but I've been so busy developing the Le DJ branch of the site that Kevin and I haven't even had the chance to speak. However, I was able to find a great remake to honor our beloved sampled saturdays. Who Do You Love is an infectious soul record written in 1964 that reached #25 on Billboard. Last year, Museum of Bella Artes, a Swedish pop band remade it into one the catchiest and chilled out songs I've heard in a while. The production on this record is [...]
One of my favorite discoveries of 2008 came in the form of this bright, soulful teenager from Hampshire, England. Laura Marling made her mark that year by releasing her excellent debut at the young of 18, Alas, I Cannot Swim , amongst a couple of notable appearances on tracks from Noah and the Whale ("Five Years Time") and Mystery Jets ("Young Love") - the now 20-year-old singer-songwriter is set to release not one, but two new albums in 2010. The first of which titled I Speak Because I Can [...]

The Village Voice is throwing it's annual day party during SXSW and if you read this blog regularly you will recognize some of these names. Even better is that there is no RSVP or badges needed. All you gotta do is show up kinda early since these are some very buzzy bands. Village Voice Day Party Friday March 19th 2010 at La Zona Rosa [ MAP [...]

Go Sailor may not have set the indie-pop world on fire the way some of Rose Melberg's other projects (Tiger Trap, Rawkblog favorite-band-ever The Softies) did, but given that Rose has spent approximately an hour performing songs in Los Angeles in the last decade, all news is good news. The short-lived, Rose-fronted band - which obviously rules - is reuniting to play at Slumberland Records' 20th anniversary shows in L.A. on March 28 and San Francisco on March 27. Joining them will be other reuniting '90s luminaries Henry's Dress, Boyracer and The How, as well as modern torch-bearers Pants Yell! [...]

It's surprising how almost none of the hallmark alumni that made up Slumberland Records ' influential roster are not represented in their upcoming label celebrations or even reuniting for a one-off show. Dustin Reske's Rocketship is one of the blueprint dream-pop/twee bands for current acts like The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and i's a shame they're not playing. The band released the classic A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness in 1996, just when the music industry was starting [...]

BECAUSE 21 IS LEGAL IN NORTH AMERICA... THE WEDDING PRESENT PLAY BIZARRO LIVE IN ITS ENTIRETY IN APRIL 2010 TO COMMEMORATE THE ALBUM'S 21ST ANNIVERSARY The Wedding Present, Bizarro, live. Those are the only three things you really need to know. Well, maybe just a bit more. Since its inception in Leeds, England in 1987, The Wedding Present have been well known for their love-lorn lyrics and jangly and distortion-heavy guitars. Once called the 'British Pixies', they have influenced a wide range of groups from Blur to The Pains Of Being Pure At [...]
I'm thinking Ride when I hear the Norwich four piece Sennen : same insistent waves of guitar, same panorama of widescreen sound, same bittersweet shoegazing tunes. 'Age of Denial' (Hungry Audio) is vigorous dreampop, with the emphasis on the 'pop', both rousing and uplifting. Norfolk might be known for its turkeys but this is the dog's bollocks of shoegaze. Myspace Dorias Baracca are teenage Danish shoegazers and, on the evidence of the 'Hands At Melting Point EP' (Club AC30 Records), you can believe the claim that [...]

If you haven't gotten to know Black Tambourine , as very few did, then you're lucky this time around, as Slumberland Records (the one who brought you lots of goodies like Pains of Being Pure at Heart ) will be releasing an anthology of the band on March 30th. BTambourine only existed for a few short years, but this new anthology will have four new songs (two originals, two covers) for your ears. Just another thing to be excited about in 2010. Google Cache says: Yeah, it's still months away, but someone has to kick SXSW season off, right? So it is with some pride and anticipation that we announce the Village Voice's 2010 SXSW party, featuring the xx, Superchunk, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and our old friends Surfer Blood. Friday, March 19, La Zona Rosa, Austin, TX, 12pm - 5pm. These bands are alternately old friends and young heroes to us so it just didn't seem worth keeping secret any longer. You will probably forget but we will definitely remind you. [...]
It's January 31st, and I am pretty sick right now. I have been pushing aside doing write ups for my top albums of 2009. I just haven't been able to find the time. It is late January and I am just getting my list out now. The blurbs would feel forced if I got them out by today, so I decided not to force the issue and to just give you the list without blurbs. 2009 was a pretty good year in music overall. I spent countless hours with these albums making great memories with my friends, and [...]
I wrote about this band earlier in the month, if you've not turned yourself on to them yet, what are you waiting for? MP3: Come Saturday - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

A célébrer absolument! turzi -baltimore- chromeo -night by night- iswhat?! -can't get in (with hamid drake)- phoebe killdeer & the short straws -he's gone- vv brown -l.o.v.e.- the pains of being pure at heart -a teenager in love- thus:owls -sometimes- the leisure society -a short weekend begins with longing-
Black Tambourine , a short-lived indie side project from the early '90s, is being resurrected with a new compilation that includes unreleased and newly recorded songs. The band's sound holds up well today. Throw Aggi Off the Bridge sounds quite a bit like the Pains of Being Pure at Heart . Somehow I missed these guys during their brief stint from 1989 to 1991. Formed by members of Velocity Girl and Whorl , the band never made a proper album. The comp is being put out by Slumberland , which is [...]
