Drums Play Spaceland Monday Night (and It's Free) Ray Davies put on a fantastic show on Saturday night at the Orpheum. If you get a chance to see him on this tour do not hesitate. More on that later. Another great week this week. [Let's see now, which direction is Universal City? ...] Silversun Pickups have been piling on the miles since they released their sophomore album "Swoon" — the L.A. quartet has played 33 shows since the middle of September. They're back on their home turf for today's inaugural LA 101 event at the Gibson Amphitheatre, headlining a main-stage lineup that includes Dengue Fever (7 p.m.), Matt & Kim (7:45) and the Dandy Warhols (8:40). And there's fine matinee entertainment on the KROQ-FM locals [...]

The Happy Hollows Monday Residency at Spaceland Starts This Week Sorry for the lack of posts, thanks for sticking with me. I caught Kris Kristofferson at the Walt Disney Concert Hall last night. You've got to be a fan of his poetry, because he's not a dynamic performer. That said, he's a legend and I was happy to see him for a second time. I've missed all the recent "secret" shows, but there are a few more this week... Monday 11/2/09 [...]

I saw the awesomeness that was the "East LA Rock n Roll Revue" with The Airborne Toxic Event , The Henry Clay People , Red Cortez twice last week, once here in DC and back home in upstate NY (the latter show also included the beautiful and ethereal harmonies of The Parson Red Heads , the main reason I wanted to see the show). But the job-that-pays-the-bills exploded with deadlines upon my return so I am a bit behind with posting the reviews/photos. I did, however, want to share one of the shining moments of [...]
I wound up at the Echoplex instead, getting the joy of seeing one of L.A.'s wondrous little surprises, He's My Brother, She's My Sister. Cali country is something I love with the fervor of a late convert, since even Buck Owens was little more than some jackass on TV until I moved my Dixie-fried ears out here for an accidental steeping in the Bakersfield Sound and its many variants. Robert Kolar and Felipe Ceballos from tough indie wide-boys Lemon Sun contribute heavily to Brother/Sister, with the whole, shifting, multi-piece concatenation in the great line of Gram Rabbit and the Parson [...]
I'm catching a flight home in a few hours to catch a ultra rare appearance on the other coast by The Parson Red Heads . With Red Cortez, The Henry Clay People, and The Airborne Toxic at Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY. Short of being at Spaceland in LA a few years ago, I'm pleasantly shocked that I'm getting to see a lineup like that. But I wanted to just drop a note and say...the 500+ photos and review of the Red Cortez, The Henry Clay People, and The Airborne [...]

[mp3] The Roadside Graves: "Far and Wide" [mp3] The Parson Red Heads: "You can Leave It" [mp3] The Parson Red Heads: "Burning Up The Sky" Photos by Karp So, the age old adage held true: never see a show at Lit Lounge. Such was the case again on Saturday night. While both bands, California's The Parson Red Heads and New Jersey's Roadside Graves were both in [...]

[Birthday greetings go out to Matthew Sweet today. And, tonight:] Not a good thing when your band name is more memorable than your music. Portland quartet Starf*cker — who brings its modest dance-pop to the Echo tonight — is doing something about its career-assassinating name, anyway. The band just called upon its fans to participate in a name-change contest (newnameideas@gmail.com, if you are so inspired). I'm thinking something that suggests bright colors. ... Nice to see the Breakestra [whom I wrote about in the Times [...]
