So I'm trying something different right now. I'm going to link to 10 blogposts that I think are particularly good. I'm going to ask you, my readers, to thumb-up or digg or whatever both this post and some of the ones I linked to, if you like them. Then, I'm going to ask the owners of those blogs that I link to to make their own posts, linking to me and to some posts that they like . Then ask their readers/bloggers to do the same. None of those bloggers know I [...]

This may be a news flash to some of you, but I am not cool. I have serious envy of bloggers who are better writers than I am, who have their shit together enough to post every day, who get lots of free CDs, tickets, backstage passes, and other swag. Most of the people who solicit me for a review for their new album clearly don't even read my blog. My most recent e-mail solicitation was from an Australian group who describes themselves as a "blend of hip hop and electro-pop." I have nothing against [...]

Frank Yang If I'd managed to get to the El Mocambo on Sunday night in time to catch first act David Schultz & The Skyline , I think I could legitimately lay claim to have seen the longest bill - in character count, at least - of all time. But it didn't happen so I had to settle for just one of the longest in recent memory, thanks to Thao with The Get Down Stay Down and The Portland Cello Project . As the more insightful might have discerned, The Portland [...]
Het leek een schamel jaar te worden voor de Drive-By Truckers-fans. Patterson Hood en zijn band namen dit jaar namelijk min of meer een sabbatical. Maar nu het einde van het jaar nadert blijkt het in ieder geval qua cd's...
Thanks all for the links.... Charlie Darwin - The Low Anthem Marah on the comeback trail [...]

World Cafe - Driving Solo (WXPN) Patterson Hood played a great set for World Café last week, aided and abetted the Screwtopians - from Centro-matic frontman Will Johnson on guitar and Scott Danborn on keyboards / fiddle plus fellow "Truckers" John Neff and Brad Morgan and the "Truckers" producer Dave Barbe on bass. Playing tracks from this years solo release "Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs)", Patterson answers questions on the albums genesis and the history of the tracks, chat's about screen plays and [...]

Tarina Westlund When I wrote up Thao with The Get Down Stay Down's last album We Brave Bee Stings And All back in August of last year , I gave it a net stamp of approval, with Thao Nguyen's exuberant delivery and energy making up for my concerns about the tendency oof her voice to wander from pitch - certainly, that woozy enthusiasm was part of her charm, but I'm a bit of a stickler on that. So I'm pleased to be able to report [...]

Toronto - Lucero are one of those bands who've been around awhile and have a dedicated following, but who a lot of people just haven't heard of. The Memphis based band have been around since 1998 andplay what could be variously described as country punk, punk country, alt country or just rock n' roll. Their myspace page desccribes them as rock/indie/southern rock, so we'll go with that. They're touring behind their new album 1372 Overton Park, their first for a major label. The crowd was full of hardcore fans (speaking of hardcore, I spotted no less [...]

Have being enjoying the latest offering from the mighty Drive-by Truckers " T he Fine Print " , a collection of rarities, covers and alternate versions that will be the band's final release on New West, it doesn't sound like it should - it somehow manages to remain a pretty cohesive record despite the disparate origin of it parts, the highlights for me, a stellar version of Uncle Frank , the brilliant "George Jones Takin' Cell Phone Blues" and "TVA". Some of the tracks got me going on a little DBT nostalgia trip, [...]

The Austin City Limits Festival is this weekend, and while it will unfortunately take place minus Merry Swankster representation, there's no reason to sour an otherwise tremendous month of music in the Lone Star State. But just for fun, here's who'd I see if I were making the trip to Austin: Blitzen Trapper, Avett Brothers, the Walkmen, Phoenix, Los Amigos Invisibles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deer Tick, the Ravonettes, !!!, Grizzly Bear, Flogging Molly, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Bon Iver, Mos Def, the Decemberists, the Dodos, Heartless Bastards, Arctic Monkeys, Dirty Projectors, [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Ex- R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry reunited with former bandmates Peter Buck and Mike Mills at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Ga., on Monday night. The gig, which was headlined by Buck's side projects the Baseball Project and the Minus Five, marked Berry's first performance since he played with R.E.M. at the 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Berry joined members of both bands onstage for the show's encore and drummed on covers [...]
Covers albums are always a tricky proposition. Even with artists I like, I find that covers come off as one of two things – either they hew too close to the original and lack any definitive point on their own, or else they play much too fast and loose in their interpretation of a classic song. In either case, they're often treated as a bit disposable, merely quickly recorded, poorly thought out b-sides or cash grabs. It seems like a lose-lose proposition. Do you want to be the artist who ruins a classic or the one who makes a completely [...]
Well ladies and gentlemen, I have decided to enter the podcasting world and present a show that showcases some of the bands Under The Dog writes about and hopefully some that I don't have time to write about. As I've stated before, UTD is expanding it's music to more than heavy ass abrasive music and branching out into more stuff that I think continues on the tradition here at UTD. Since it's not going to be all hardcore and metal, I'm gonna place the mellowest songs first, move into hip-hop and transition over to the most abrasive stuff at [...]
Jim Carroll , author, poet, and musician, died Friday at age 60 . If you don't know his music, you may know his book, The Basketball Diaries , on which the movie was based ( to a large degree anyway) . He was like a male version of Patti Smith, taking his poetry and putting it to music in 70s NY, only his, for a long time, included the back beat of heroin. Carroll's song "People Who Died" is a blood-pumping homage to Carroll's friends who passed on, one very much with Ramones-like riffs that make [...]

Facebook There's a good run of albums, there's career consistency and then there's Yo La Tengo . The New Jersey outfit has been turning out full-length gems for almost a quarter-century now, and while some are held in higher regard than others, their consistently high standard has been nothing short of astonishing. And this isn't a case of a band finding a style they excel in and working on variations of that theme, at least not unless you consider "restless creativity and experimentation in the realms of pop music" to be a single theme. [...]
