Ok I realize that I just wrote about The Knife but I did not actually visit their site until after I published the post and was pleasantly surprised to find that they have apparently teamed up with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock to release a studio version of the opera Tomorrow, In A Year scheduled to release on March 1st. Its apparently based on Charles Darwin's work on evolution, an interesting concept but Im not too sure Im feeling it as much as I do their other stuff. I first started to listen to [...]

Well, we are three days into the new year and here I am looking back at 2009 instead of forward into 2010. As always I'm a bit late to the gate. I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday and that the next year will bring lots of music into your lives. As Nietzsche said, "Without music life would be a mistake." The year 2009 was interesting for sure. We saw Lady Gaga burst slowly onto the scene (her debut single took 22 weeks to climb to the top of the [...]

New Years Eve is one my favourite nights of the year, everyone goes out and forgets about school, work, or whatever else may be on your mind and has a good time. Hope that you all have a great time tonight whatever you may be doing. Justice - One Minute of Midnight Share and Enjoy: [...]

In most respects, 2009 was a pretty good year for music. For me, personally, most of my favorite bands released albums--Brand New, Thrice, Thursday, Viva Voce, Animal Collective, The Decemberists, mewithoutyou--if there had been a Five Iron Frenzy re-union show, then that would've covered all my base instincts. But actually two (kind of) new acts captured my attention at the top...so here's a list of Deckfight's favorite albums this year, followed by 5 faves from Andrew. Also somewhere in there, Deckfight's favorite record labels of the year. 19) Mountain [...]

In 2006 Brampton's Moneen took a huge step forward with the release of The Red Tree. The album found the band finally cashing in on all the potential critics and fans had been boasting and trumpeting for years. The songs were rich and deep, and knew when to rock and when slow it down. With the possibility of their potential having finally been reached, Moneen took their time, three years of their time crafting their Follow up to The Red Tree. Now, with the release of The World I Want To Leave Behind, [...]
peachcake at the knitting factory by scott schultz L.A. Times reports that Hollywood's Knitting Factory—which the Times says spent $200,000 wrangling with city permits almost exactly a year ago—will not seek to renew its lease at its current Hollywood Boulevard location once it expires this October 31. "Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, it's a pirates life for me." From the moment a that a creepy sounding kid, ala those pale and pasty little shits from movies like the Ring, starts singing this little ditty two things about In Fear and Faith 's debut full length begin to come into focus. Number one, like oh so man bands, they have a serious pirate fetish. Seriously, to all the bands out there, we get it, you travel from place to place, get drunk, rape (not literally, but who doesn't enjoy some good role playing from time to time), pillage [...]

Nostalgia, can music really evoke the inauthentic feeling of a moment in time once lived? Can music replicate and improve upon a genre perfected over twenty years ago? In many ways it feels like 1986 again thanks to ' What Year Will You Have the World? ' It was a time when synthpop ruled the hearts of the masses. Melodies, beats, and lyrics were almost completely free of guitars and percussion. Peachcake aims to bring a new wave of synthpop into the modern fold. The Arizona duo, Stefan Pruett and John O'Keefe have [...]

Between attending CMW shows, fighting off a killer migraine yesterday, and inputting dozens of new subscribers into vitaminsforyou play the all night (unaffliated) CMW afterparty at Queen Street Studios, Sunday night, between 1am and 6am. the update mailing list, I've had my hands full the past few days. And it's going to continue to be a VERY busy weekend, what with all the official (and unofficial) Canadian Music Fest gigs, several new theatre shows, and the regular assortment of great comedy shows and local [...]

I wish I had more time to work on this post, but here's a rough idea of what I like this week. Note that CMW now calls the festival portion CMF , details of all the showcases here . Before I get to the CMF picks though, also note that Charles Spearin is putting on his Happiness Project tonight and tomorrow night at the Music Gallery. Details here . Wednesday : Musebox/Eye Showcase at the Gladstone. Bands start in that order down [...]

What? Fairy tale masks, eighties sweatshirts and bright colours aren't enough to entice you? At least Peachcake's music is a party. Like Of Montreal , but so so different. Peachcake - Souls Have No Drum Machine (mp3) (buy)

Ian West Canadian Music Week - sorry, Canadian Music fest , as the showcase component has now been renamed - is a tricky time for me, because as much as I'd like to take in as much of the shows on offer as possible, I need to be mindful of saving energy for the big show - SxSW - the following week. To this end, I tend to be very particular about what I choose to see during CMW/F, avoiding if I can bands I've seen or can easily [...]
