When thinking Chicago progressive metal, two bands ultimately come to mind: Pelican and Russian Circles . Now, neither of these bands are in competition with one another, but you can't deny both Pelican and Russian Circles have a very similar sonic approach. But on the Estonian - though they prefer to be labeled "international" - metal Web site Metal Storm , our dear two Chicago prog-metal acts are pitted against each other in the most epic award category of all time. Yes, Pelican and Russian Circles have both been nominated for a [...]

Southern Lord Records are offering a subscription series for their 2010 vinyl releases (YOB, Trap Them, Pelican, Twilight, Black Cobra and Ascend). :: Spin takes some time to remember Jay Reatard . :: The Happy Hollows got hit up by Buddyhead for an interview a while back, and they just posted the video. :: I really thought Amy Winehouse had eclipsed Pete Doherty as the biggest legally-troubled music idiot a while back. Turns out I was wrong. He brought heroin to court . Heroin. To court. :: Joe Walsh doesn't like it when people use [...]
Chicago's celebrated (and derided) instru-metal heavies Pelican are commemorating the Feb. 23 double-vinyl issuance of last year's What We All Come to Need with a one-off show in March in their home town and (wait for it) a limited-edition coffee blend. Yes, you read that right. Pelican's "Ephemeral Bean Blend," produced in conjunction with Chi-town's Intelligentsia Coffee, will only be available

It's on! For the second year in a row, Scion is announcing a free one day festival: Scion Rock Fest. This year's lineup looks decent (although hard to top last year's mammoth lineup featuring MASTODON and NEUROSIS as headliners). This year will feature: - CANNIBAL CORPSE - SHRINEBUILDER - VOIVOD - D.R.I. - BRUTAL TRUTH - HATE ETERNAL - YOB - PELICAN - 3 [...]
I have a theory that buried in the fine print of every metal band's record contract is a line about how at least one of their videos must feature clips of a harsh landscape at some point. For Pelican, their contractual obligation filling is in the video for "Final Breath" that starts in the Shire and moves into a tunnel of increasingly biological-looking depths. Then back to the Shire for some rocking. This almost ends up looking like a parody of those movie scenes where they go down into some hidden tunnel, since it goes on for so long. [ [...]
What We All Come To Need (Southern Lord), Pelican's excellent latest album, closes with "Final Breath," the band's first song to feature vocals. Is this a sign of things to come? Who knows? But right now, enjoy the Matt Santoro-directed video for "Final Breath."
2009 — what a crapsuck of a year. Without overstating or getting into it, it was easily the worst since, well, high school at least and I am not sorry that it is over. If I ever needed an object lesson in saving power of music, this was it. Music was one of the few things that keep the year from being a complete personal disaster. I've read others claim that 2009 wasn't a great year for music. In one sense I agree: there were few great albums — albums good enough to be considered for regular rotation [...]
by Cosmo Lee The date and location of this year's Scion Rock Fest are now public . In case you don't remember, Scion Rock Fest last year was a gigantic free festival with a beyond-ridiculous lineup . We interviewed Wolves in the Throne Room, who played at that festival and regretted it, citing a "slimy, Satanic energy that surrounds that corporate culture." Satanic energy: sounds like metal to me. (See here [...]
Rumors are starting to heat up about the Scion Rock Fest 2010 . The date is set - Saturday, March 13 - and at least one venue (of a rumored 4) has the date on their schedule though no band info listed. Because Scion hasn't released any information yet, these acts should only be considered rumors until an official announcement is made: Shrinebuilder , Pelican , YOB , Cannibal Corpse and Saviours . As info becomes available, I'll post it here.
