Enjoy these and please feel free to link to your favorite covers in the comments. Major Lazer - HALO (Beyonce Cover) Solange Knowles - Stillness [...]

Hey remember Hot Chip, that quirky electro dance band that always keeps it silly and fun? Well let me introduce you to Hot Chip, that quirky sometimes quirky electro dance electro dance-influenced indie band that always keeps it silly and fun sometimes keeps it silly and fun but suffers from heartbreak, just like the rest of us. Let me then introduce you to their fourth first album, One Life Stand . As they have mentioned in several interviews, Hot Chip has shied away from the sometimes-considered "shallow" dance music for [...]

Gavin Castleton spent the good part of a decade playing keyboard, rapping, and singing with a band of musicians from the future. From 1995 to 2004, Gruvis Malt toured the US and released nine recordings before disbanding. Since then, Gavin Castleton has continued "futurocking," accumulating an impressive catalog of his own. His latest full-length album, Home, proves that he is still breaking the space/time continuum, as it takes listeners through a prog-pop odyssey far ahead of its time (read our review of Home here). The Social Narwhal recently sat down with Gavin Castleton...at incongruous times of the week...2,100 miles [...]

So I've been sitting on Laurent Bourque 's impressive debut CD for a few months now, trying to come up with the right way to describe it without making it sound like it's a bit on the dull side. You could slide it into the singer/songwriter genre, but that makes it sound boring. You could say it's a rock album, but that conjures up images of bar bands and classic rock, and that's not doing it justice either. And it's certainly hooky enough to be called a pop album, but the sounds are a tad too organic for it [...]

On Scratch My Back , his first album in 8 years, Peter Gabriel aims to shed light on outstanding songs from both rock warhorses (Paul Simon, David Bowie, Neil Young) and from an alternative lineup that reads like a college radio programmer's wet dream (Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Magnetic Fields).
In case you haven't already heard, there's a Magnetic Fields documentary on the way. The official trailer has been revealed ( Stereogum ), so check it out below. If you're a die-hard Magnetic Fields fan, chances are you've been waiting a long time to see this, considering the documentary has been ten years in the making. The commentary comes from a surprising all-star cast, including Peter Gabriel (who covered the Magnetic Fields song "The Book of Love" on his new Scratch My Back cover album), Sarah Silverman, Carrie Brownstein, Neil Gaiman (If [...]

HEADS UP Peter Gabriel @ Hollywood Bowl Fri 5/7 The ticket pre-sale for us special American Express cardholders and fan club members is live now. Am I the only one a bit dubious Peter Gabriel can headline the Hollywood Bowl these days? I tend to think of him of having about the same waning popularity these days as, say, a Tears for Fears. And to further push it, he's proudly advertised this show as "orchestra, no drums, no guitars." Integrity for sure, but maybe [...]
The new Magnetic Fields' documentary, which took Kerthy Fix and Gail O'Hara (also of Chickfactor , Black Tambourine fans) 10 years to make, should be a good one. There are the requisite talking heads -- including Peter Gabriel ( of course ), Sarah Silverman (why not), Carrie Brownstein, Neil Gaiman, etc. -- commenting on/arguing for Stephin Merritt's brilliance and blah, blah, blah, but at least in the trailer, the most interesting parts are listening to Merritt himself or watching him pal around with his chihuahua Irving Berlin. Emma , the BBC's adaptation of Jane Austen's comic novel is at the top of my DVD shopping list this week. Another literary adaptation in stores tomorrow is the animated Dante's Inferno . Among the week's more interesting theatrical releases are the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man and Bronson , the gritty story of Britain's most violent prisoner. The extended edition of The People Speak is a film [...]

Take cover! The new Peter Gabriel album Scratch My Back is a mixed bag of golden oldies and modern day artist songs. Mainly orchestral and sometimes radically reworked Gabriel tackles the songs with a mixture of glee and respect. The more subdued songs stand out - the melancholic piano and cello add texture to a slowed down version of Paul Simon's The Boy in the Bubble , and the strings in the Talking Heads' Listening Wind wrap the vocals like a comfy blanket. Pity that I Think it's Going to Rain Today [...]

Selfhood by Tanya Johnston Because he believes in himself, he doesn't try to convince others. Because he is content with himself, he doesn't need others' approval. Because he accepts himself, the whole world accepts him. -- Lao Tzu This a stronger rendition of a Bon Iver favorite of mine. The original is profoundly better but this cover isn't too shabby as well. Wonderful art from Tanya Johnston . Peter [...]
As promised, here's the second half of the interview with David and Peter Brewis of Field Music after their gig in Brooklyn on 30 January 2010. Note: The audio of this interview is located below. The transcript is included below and after the cut. Descriptions of what is happening have been placed between asterisks, i.e. "*Peter enters the room*" [...]
