Yes, this is a little late, but it doesn't really matter anymore. I've made some very slight changes to the list - some songs I lost interest in after a while, some I moved around, but the top thirty have remained the same. 2009 has been a good year for music, perhaps better than its predecessor, but these songs take some beating. I think the best thing to do is to stream the tracks while reading. Or just download them all, whatever's good for you. All the rather lovely artwork for this list is by Anika , who also [...]

Toronto - And you thought James Cameron was retiring. After the Abyss, everyone was hoping for him to direct another big blockbuster. Then came Terminator 2, and the expectation became higher. Titanic was a whooping 6 years after T2. And it has taken him 11 or 12 more years since Titanic to give us Avatar. And all of these movies were LONG - Titanic was 194 min, T2 weights in at 130 min or so, and Avatar is around 162 min. From this, it seems that he chooses to craft movies that prove a point or challenge himself, more so [...]

Vincent Moon, (real name Mathieu Saura) independent film maker from Paris (Take Away Shows from La Blogotheque, Various artists videos including Bon Iver, Yeasayer,R.E.M., Arcade Fire, Sigur Rós, The National, The Shins, Andrew Bird, Okkervil River, and Beirut has created what we feel here at YATM is the best "acoustic video" and by far the most creative and captivating series of songs on any music video we have seen this year and perhaps ever. Lost in the Trees is a folk orchestra from Chapel Hill NC, led by composer/songwriter Ari Picker. This 13 member outfit obviously incorporates a vast array of instruments into their music, so you might just hear sounds from the viola, cello, tuba, french horn, euphonium, trombone, trumpet, accordion, singing saw, mandolin…oh, and the glockenspiel. In September 2008 Lost in the Trees released the album 'All Alone in an Empty House' and started touring extensively with bands such as: The Rosebuds, Bowerbirds, Efterklang, Megafaun, The Physics of Meaning and Midtown Dickens. Picker is [...]
Lost in the Trees is a folk orchestra from Chapel Hill NC, led by composer/songwriter Ari Picker. Picker began writing songs in his bedroom at age 15 and quickly went on to front several indie pop bands during his teenage years. All along, Ari was working on solo recordings under the name Lost in the Trees. Many of these recordings were done almost secretly and the output was an eerie mix of lonely bedroom folk songs, lo-fi sound collages, and film score compositions. In 2006, Ari left his longtime band and home to study Film [...]
A member of the pioneering new generation jazz composer/players NYC's Steve Lehman can In fact be easily singled out as the most exciting in the recent years. His newest album Travail, Transformation and Flow continues to explore the idiosyncratic Lehman sound - albeit with an octet this time - if you remember 2007's " On Meaning " which was a highlight of the year as well. On TTF, the octet remains rooted in the avantgarde lore, with rapidfire drumming, time changes and free soloing, yet remain highly listenable unlike much of the improv material thanks [...]

One of our favorite and most informative blogs out there, The Music Slut have a huge announcement today. In addition to being huge fans of Morrissey, they plan to release a special cover album in honor of the former frontman of The Smiths' birthday. Here's what Matt of The Music Slut had to say about this special undertaking: As Mozzer's 50th birthday approaches (May 22nd), I wanted to celebrate in some sort of special manner. After much deliberation, I decided that a covers project would be [...]
Our friends over at The Music Slut really love Morrissey. In fact, they love him so much that they're already celebrating former Smith frontman turned solo extraordinaire's 50th birthday... As Mozzer's 50th birthday approaches (May 22nd), I wanted to celebrate in some sort of special manner. After much deliberation, I decided that a covers project would be the perfect way for The Music Slut to mark the occasion. Over the course of the last few months, I've asked a bevy of my favorite artists to contribute tracks to TMS Hearts Moz. Highlighting a selection [...]

Each weekday for the next four weeks, The Music Slut will be posting a different band covering Morrissey or The Smiths. It's a pretty ambitious endeavor, and the lineup of bands (posted below the jump) is pretty damn impressive. The full list of artists included on TMS Hearts Moz (in alphabetical order) is as follows: A [...]

I'm not usually one to cut-and-paste a post out of someone else's post or-worse yet-a press release, but seeing as how Matt @ The Music Slut is one of my favourite bloggers, and this is such a fantastic and brilliant project, I want to make sure all of you get the scoop in time. Here's Matt explaining it in his own words: "As many of you are well aware, I'm a massive Morrissey fan. In fact, 'massive' might just be an understatement. As Mozzer's 50th birthday approaches (May [...]

Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh , a 29-year-old from Rathfarnham with a degree in physics who once helped construct a Namibian cheetah sanctuary, is best thought of as an independent and original musician, specialising in the fiddle and Hardanger violin, whose roots are in traditional Irish music. To call him a traditional musician doesn't quite do justice to the breadth of his interests and experimentation with the form, as on 2007's inventive and vastly moving Where The One-Eyed Man Is King . Ó Raghallaigh (he pronounces it "O Rye-Allah"), is an engaging and energising character who uses the word [...]

hometapes : We've had a few days to come down from the frenzy that was Hometapes at SXSW. A kickoff show in San Antonio, a big ol' showcase, a 12+ hour Saturday party, a flutter of day parties, a film shoot, our own house (home to 30 people), and a BBQ pilgrimage - and those are the few bits we caught on film. This year's field trip to Texas was a non-stop explosion of music, friends, and inspirato. There were multiple moments where we just stepped back, took it all in, let tears flood our eyes, [...]
