As previously announced , November brings a special "songwriter in residence" at The Mill in Iowa City by Pieta Brown called "This Land is Your Music : Pieta Brown & Friends" which is a series of three shows on November 5, 12, and 19 which is described as "celebrating Music, Land & Community." Acclaimed producer Don Was literally pulled off to the side of an L.A. freeway when he heard the voice of Pieta Brown live in the studio from trendsetting radio station KCRW. A few phone calls, emails and months later, Brown and guitarist Bo Ramsey met up with Was at his home to play him some new songs. Pieta Brown and The Iowa City Mill have announced a three-week residency in November called "This Music Is Your Land" and will have Pieta exploring her catalog in various solo and band configurations as well as showcasing local musicians. The shows will take place the first three Thursdays in November: 11/5, 11/12, and 11/19 and will start at 8PM. The tickets will be $10. In what has been a treat for collectors like myself Calexico has been providing "Tour Only" releases since 1999 on their in-house label Our Soil Our Strength. Their last tour release was in June, 2007 with Tool Box - a recording of instrumentals with just Joey and John rather than the full band. As I reported earlier , Pieta Brown assembled a band to shake up her live performances, which are typically a duo (usually with Bo Ramsey on guitars). This makes for a very intimate performance and Pieta's music and vocals undeniably shine in this setup, but it's been my opinion for a while that she should perform in a band setting to more closely approximate her albums.
