Chi?
Last October I happened upon a sweet Denver band Young Coyotes. Their brand of indie rock brought about comparisons to Pinback and Arcade Fire. I didn't know much about them then and I still... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

[Birthday wishes to Butch Walker on Saturday. ... Here's what's on my weekend radar, for one reason or another — for a more comprehensive list, please visit Duke at You Set the Scene :] Tonight: It's Week 2 of Julian Casablancas' flashy residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre, and when I saw the opener last week the Strokes frontman-turned-synth-rocker promised to tweak things every week. One change is that a second opening band has been added, the Growlers joining [...]
I'm up in New York for the rest of the week for the CMJ Music Marathon checking out some hot new bands. A hot band with a few records under the belt is playing Atlanta tonight however and making me a tiny bit envious of those of you who will ...

Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]
If you, too, were sideswiped by the Homosexuals' no longer being the openers for Pinback at the Granada this past Thursday, you probably also unaware that they'd been replaced by Joe Jack Talcum o... Continue reading "Download the Dead Milkmen's Halloween Show" >

We're supposedly heading into a slower time of year for live music-- holidays, weather, and the slow new release calendar from here on out are all partially responsible. You'd never know it, though, looking at this week's calendar, featuring long established names like Mission of Burma, They Might Be Giants, Pinback, Black Heart Procession, Erin McKeown, and The Pixies (in Eugene, but not in Black Francis' garage). Heck, even B.B. King's dropping by this week. So with a group like that on the way, we're pretty happy to be able offer up tickets for grabs to a [...]

I guess life turns out like this sometimes; you have great expectations and they aren't met. That happened with Zach Smith of Pinback 's first full Systems Officer album, reviewed HERE ; it just didn't do it for me, even after years of waiting patiently for an SO full-length. Woe is me, or something ...

Modified Arts , an all-ages venue in downtown Phoenix that has been a staple of the local music scene and a vital venue for touring indie bands for nearly 11 years, will change direction and transform into a space focused mostly on art. (Read more here and here .) As such, I am collecting thoughts and memories from the musicians who played there and the fans who attended its many shows. This is less an obituary and more a celebration of a less-than-perfect but charming venue that, as we know it now, will [...]

Ben Salmon Presented as a limited-edition CD run complete with hand-screened covers, The Sun Says He's God is the first proper offering from the Brothers Young . While the band's boots are muddied by the murky waters of traditional folk-with enough down-home bluegrass to justify your bourbon intake during their live performances-the Brothers' intertwined melodies can occasionally fall into Pinback territory, especially on the dark and sprawling "Waterman." But The Sun Says is not a modern mashup of genres; it's primarily a sleepy-eyed folk record, [...]

click image to view artist in itunes Sounds like: Autolux, Film School, Pinback what's so good? Shoegaze is a genre of alternative rock that emerged from the united kingdom in the late 1980s. The British music press called this genre "shoegazing" because the musicians in these bands often maintained a motionless performing style, standing on stage and staring at their effects pedals or the floor while playing their instruments; hence, the idea that they were gazing at their shoes. [...]
This week has been a week most Pinback fans have anticipated for quite some time. Pinback member Zack Smith delivers a fantastic album under the moniker Systems Officer with Underslept. Three reasons to see Pinback at Bottom Lounge tonight: 1. Right now you need some very catchy, simplistic post-modern rock from a band like Pinback and you don't even know it yet. You know that song you hear, immediately involuntarily start moving your head to and realize that with this song you've hit a level of musical zen you never thought possible? Pinback wrote all those songs. 2. One of the most precious songs ever written [...]

[ Review originally published at www.drownedinsound.com.] OK people, I'm still at hard, working on the transition from Blogger to WordPress. It's going to be awesome, I've got a whole new look, but I suspect I'm slowly going insane, too, so there's that. Anyhoo, READ A REVIEW OF A PINBACK ALBUM HERE . It's pretty funny because someone in the Comments section calls me a "flappy dingleberry." A term I invented, but still [...]

Familiar names abound on stages this week, including Dirty Projectors, Dinosaur Jr., Langhorne Slim, The Mother Hips, David Bazan, Horse Feathers, and more. Plus, new releases on the way from Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, Pinback side project Systems Officer, a collaboration from Magnolia Electric Co.'s Jason Molina and Centro-Matic's Will Johnson, and the 20th anniversary deluxe reissue of Nirvana's Bleach. Relatively slow week coming up in Chicago, at least in terms of shows I'm interested in seeing. The two best shows (for me, at least) are both on Thursday - Future of The Left at Bottom Lounge and The Jet Age at Beat Kitchen.* That said, I personally only need a couple of good shows this week, as I'm headed down to Austin on Friday for this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest . More on that later in the week, but for now I leave you with one word... Danzig [...]
