Poster Art by Jared Silbert We've been somewhat absent on the live events side of things lately, but it's not for a lack of irons in fires (or pots on stovetops, or, you get the idea). In any event, before our big South by Southwest shindig in March, we're hosting a free happy hour show during Noise Pop. It's a great all-local lineup that's guaranteed to be a ton of fun. The Bay Bridged Presents: A Noise Pop Happy Hour featuring [...]

words by BBG , photos by Greg Cristman No one minded that the Moritz Von Oswald Trio had five members when it made its American debut on Saturday night at Le Poisson Rouge, part of the Unsound Festival New York and the Wordless Music series at the club. The trio is an alliance of techno and ambient disc jockeys and programmers doing what they don't do in D.J. booths or remix studios: playing instruments together in real [...]

Kurt Vile has been writing and recording music since junior high, but he only started receiving mass recognition for his songs recently. After jamming with friends in his hometown of Philadelphia for years, including playing lead guitar for the indie rock band The War on Drugs , Vile's solo work slowly began to gain more attention. He started small with a couple 7 inch releases, but soon began releasing longer-playing collections. His 2008 album Constant Hitmaker was released on Gulcher Records to a steady stream of positive buzz as an album succeeding in mixing the immediacy [...]

Take cover! The new Peter Gabriel album Scratch My Back is a mixed bag of golden oldies and modern day artist songs. Mainly orchestral and sometimes radically reworked Gabriel tackles the songs with a mixture of glee and respect. The more subdued songs stand out - the melancholic piano and cello add texture to a slowed down version of Paul Simon's The Boy in the Bubble , and the strings in the Talking Heads' Listening Wind wrap the vocals like a comfy blanket. Pity that I Think it's Going to Rain Today [...]

Girls of Graviton are a sound manipulating foursome out of Memphis that bring the noise. Their songs sound as if you surrounded yourself with four boom-boxes, three playing various Legendary Pink Dots albums and one playing the JAMC-and thats an understatement when you include the skewed complexity of their sound-craft. This new song "Rainbo" is a recording they just finished for a Speedtapes comp. If at first you feel as if you have multiple songs playing, its not so, its just he incredible intro to this song. Girls Of Graviton - Rainbo
Marina & The Diamonds - Hollywood I'm still not entirely in love with Marina's voice, though that's more of a personal thing. However, the song's quite nice. Subtle in a way... it doesn't really hit you over the head the first time. It's a real grower. Hopefully that means longevity. B+ Lady Antebellum - Need You Now I'm not a country fan but I can see why this is taking America by storm right now. Somehow it sounds more like a big 80's ballad than [...]

I'm a sucker for pretty pictures of pretty people, especially if the people in question also happen to be very talented. This is why I'm bringing the latest issue of Flaunt Magazine to your attention. Besides starring in a beautiful series of photographs taken by Kurt Iswarienko , Charlotte Gainsbourgh is also being interviewed in this issue (obviously that's not her on the cover though). The French songbird talks about collaborating with Beck on her latest album, the emergency brain surgery she went through after suffering a blow to the head in 2007, [...]
The final night of the world's largest winter festival, Celtic Connections , and the 15th birthday celebration of Glasgow based indie label Chemikal Underground (home, at various times, to Mogwai, Arab Strap, The Delgados and The Phantom Band) gave the O2 ABC had dual reasons to smile through the Sunday night blues. With a mammoth bill of seven eclectic acts blazing through half a dozen tracks each, interspersed with label-affiliated videos, Chemikal Underground fell somewhere between a live version of an album sampler and a full on mini festival. Surprisingly, the ABC didn't seem that [...]

Laneway Festival February 1, 2010 Britomart Square, Auckland Last week our Melbourne friends told us that the Laneway Festival is one of the least respected festivals in Australia, we were surprised, but it meant we entered the first Auckland Laneway festival with a hint of scepticism. We'd been told stories of forty minute-queues to see bands, poor facilities and an even poorer location, but on first inspection of the Britomart Square set-up it seemed to be very [...]

Oakland string metal maniacs Judgement Day premiered today a video for "Cobra Strike," the first single off the band's upcoming album Peacocks/Pink Monsters , out on April 13, 2010. The hyperkinetic video introduces the video game "Violin Hero," and then colorfully shows how the game leads to societal downfall. You can read the band's story behind the video and its production at their web site. Judgement Day co-headlines a Noise Pop 2010 show on Friday, February 26th (9pm, $12) at Bottom of the Hill [...]
Somewhere In The World mp3 Decibully World Travels Fast I almost walked out on the headliner of this one. Yep. One of my favorite bands, A Lull performed their going-away show that night and it was awesome. They premiered one, never-before played song ("Pregnancy") and a two other new ones that I'd not heard ("Spread It All Around" and "Pot Luck") and it was wonderful to see them again. As always, the stage was filled with drums of all sizes and their noise absolutely filled the room. I met a friend there [...]

'It's gone!' sighed the Rat, sinking back in his seat again. 'So beautiful and strange and new! Since it was to end so soon, I almost wish I had never heard it. For it has aroused a longing in me that is pain, and nothing seems worth while but just to hear that sound once more and go on listening to it for ever. No! There it is again!' he cried, alert once more. Entranced, he was silent for a long space, spellbound. 'Now it passes on and I begin to lose it,' he said presently. 'O, Mole! [...]
