Kurt Vile has been writing and recording music since junior high, but he only started receiving mass recognition for his songs recently. Take cover! The new Peter Gabriel album Scratch My Back is a mixed bag of golden oldies and modern day artist songs. Mainly orchestral and sometimes radically reworked Gabriel tackles the songs with a mixture of glee and respect. The more subdued songs stand out - the melancholic piano and cello add texture to a slowed down version of Paul Simon's The Boy in the Bubble , and the strings in the Talking Heads' Listening Wind wrap the vocals like a comfy blanket. Girls of Graviton are a sound manipulating foursome out of Memphis that bring the noise. Their songs sound as if you surrounded yourself with four boom-boxes, three playing various Legendary Pink Dots albums and one playing the JAMC-and thats an understatement when you include the skewed complexity of their sound-craft. This new song "Rainbo" is a recording they just finished for a Speedtapes comp. If at first you feel as if you have multiple songs playing, its not so, its just he incredible intro to this song.
