Just over a year ago, Animal Collective released an album that I noted was "a great balance between art and pop," a trend that continued thoughout 2009, the year that experimental indie bands began to embrace pop sentiments and make amazing albums. Without missing a beat, Yeasayer gives their own brilliant take on experimental and pop on what I'll say is thus far The Best Album of 2010. Odd Blood doesn't exist to be picked apart or analyzed heavily, so I'll do my best to do neither. The second album by the Brooklyn [...]
Bad Lieutenant , the alternative rock band formed by New Order's Bernard Sumner and Phil Cunningham, is finally heading to America for their first overseas tour. After canceling last year's shows , which included opening spots for the Pixies, they'll be making four appearances in the U.S. in support of last October's debut, Never Cry Another Tear . After rounding out some dates in Europe, Sumner and friends will select North American markets, which include San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. However, all the dates will fit around the group's [...]
Legendaarisen post-punk/goottirock-yhtye Dead Can Dancen nokkamies, brittiläinen laulaja ja multi-instrumentalisti Brendan Perry saapuu pääsiäisviikonloppuna ensi kertaa Suomeen osana miehen mittavaa Euroopan kiertuetta. Maailmanlaajuista arvostusta nauttiva artisti nousee Nosturin lavalle sunnuntaina 4. huhtikuuta. Vuonna 1981 Brendan Perryn ja Lisa Gerrardin Australiassa perustama Dead Can Dance oli yksi kaikkien aikojen merkittävimmistä post-punk/gootti-yhtyeistä, ja kokoonpanon vaikutus kuuluu yhä edelleenkin modernissa vaihtoehtomusiikissa. Dead Can Dance levytti vuosina 1984-1996 seitsemän studioalbumia maineikkaalle 4AD-levymerkille (mm. The Birthday Party, Cocteau Twins, Pixies, Scott Walker). Alunperin post-punk-soundeista tunnettu yhtye loi jo uransa alkuvaiheessa omanlaisensa "dark wave" -tyylin, jossa kohtasivat goottirock, [...]

Shellshag Rumors in Disguise Don Giovanni Shellshag are a throwback band in the sense they sound like any number of '90s bands – The Pixies, The Breeders, L7, The Lemonheads, Weezer, and Sonic Youth – without sounding exactly like any one of them. Shellshag are also a throwback band in the way they recall the days when being alt or indie didn't require one to be literary, obtuse, difficult, or forsake simple song structures and big melodies for the sake of being different. From track one through track fifteen the [...]

- Haiku Review of Surfer Blood's Astro Coast - Armed with fuzz guitars Rocking like Rivers used to Florida SoCal Notes : Before I say anything about Surfer Blood 's excellent Weezer -esque debut record, Astro Coast , let's get up to speed and take a look at what I had to say in October when I'd only heard their "Swim" single and news of the LP just broke... "Remember what Weezer sounded like [...]

We were thumbing through the Buzzgrinder microfiche archives, and we found this article from Matt DeBenedictis that never made it up, extolling the virtues of Shellac 's Terraform on its 10th anniversary. Even though that was a while back, we can't deprive the loyal Buzzgrinderers from this bit of nostalgia. So have at it. It's been 10 years since Shellac released their second LP, Terraform , but nothing changes about Shellac over the years. They are still juggernauts that exist between the lines of noise rock [...]

You just have to love a guy like Black Francis . (Do I need to tell you he's that guy from The Pixies ?) He's about as perverse as a rock star can be without actually biting off the head of a bat or bird, ya know? I can't really re-write/reiterate this press release. The only other time this happened was when I posted on Wonderlick (which also had to do with sex, hmmm) so here, it's worth the read: I finally came into possession of an old guitar someone had given [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive When Meaghan Smith recorded a cover version of the Pixies ' 'Here Comes Your Man,' she was not only given the opportunity to work with the legendary T-Bone Burnett , but she also found herself in good company on the soundtrack of the romantic comedy ' 500 Days of Summer .' The singer's tune is alongside music by She and Him , the Smiths , the Temper Trap and more on the album. "I was so [...]

Throw on your flannel shirt and grab a mouthful of marbles because it's 1992 all the fuck over again. kc quilty hail from Brooklyn, New York, which has probably given us enough cheesy-ass post-Strokes guitar pop in the last ten minutes to burst a blood vessel; Sadie Dupuis and co. buck this trend and take us back to a time that seems so much simpler and yet so much more complicated. I often listen to alt-rock records from the 90's and reflect wistfully on how no one produces like that anymore, [...]

Renowned for a riotous live show and a love for all things dark and menacing, Sheffield 4-piece La Folie are preparing to release their exciting debut album 'Risus Sardonicus' through Tufty Records on April 5th! The band has developed an original and compelling sound, mixing catchy and memorable hooks with a brooding and macabre undertone to produce an album that's as beautifully aggressive as it is menacingly accessible. Lyrically it's a vivid and sinister delight, steeped in subtle metaphor and entertaining rhetoric that will whisk any [...]

The more involved I get in the world of publishing the more I find that there is an order or progression to things. Your career and opportunities grow as you gain knowledge, experience, and respect. A writer and publisher that I really respect is Cynthia Reeser. She recently announced the arrival of her new press Aqueous Books. This comes in a addition to her literary site Prick of The Spindle , and her productive career as writer. She is a very busy women, but recently took time to answer a few of my questions. [...]
Even though we stopped paying close attention a while ago, Frank Black has been keeping busy over the years aside from the reformation of The Pixies. Under a variety of names, he has managed to explore every weird idea that he bottled up over the years, for better or worse. Usually, though, they just sound like Pixies songs that could benefit from the rest the band adding their contributions. With that said, this new project sounds the weirdest. On March 30, the singer will release NonStopErotik under the name Black Francis. Based [...]
Seeing a band perform an album in full is a rare and rewarding experience. From recent tours by The Decemberists and The Pixies to the revisiting of such albums as Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation and Built to Spill's Perfect From Now O n, these kind of events are usually reserved for records that are either recently released or already canonized. This makes the upcoming performances of Dirty Projectors ' The Getty Address all the more unexpected and all the more exciting. The Dirty Projectors have announced two performances of the 2005 gem [...]

Swedish post-punk band, Love is All, is preparing to release their third record, Two Thousand and Ten Injuries , on Polyvinyl in March. The second single from the album is "Repetition". The track is pretty much right on par with their debut album, Nine Times That Same Song ; it mixes influences of X-Ray Spex and the Pixies . Check it out. MP3: Love is All "Repetition"

Pixies and Grand Duchy frontman Black Francis (or Frank Black or Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV when he's feeling most jaunty) has gone from songs about UFOs, to songs of love to most currently, songs of sex and his love for the vagin , exhibitionism, and...The Flying Burritto Brothers? Out 3/30, NonStopErotik features 10 original songs plus most interestingly, a cover of the Flying Burrito Brothers track "Wheels" from their Gilded Palace of Sin record. "I am Man Ray [...]

Pixies frontman, Black Francis , is returning with a new album on March 30. Cooking Vinyl will release Francis's latest solo effort, NonStopErotik . Francis claims to have recorded the record by candlelight in the wee hours of the morning with little or no sleep. It certainly sets a potential mood for the album. Check out the full track listing for NonStopErotik after the jump. NonStopErotik track list: 1. Lake of Sin 2. O My Tidy Sum 3. Rabbits 4. Wheels 5. [...]
This weekend I sat down to plan my gig calendar for the next few months. Here are the rest of my highlights for 2009: Pixies Doolittle tour The Pixies were one of my most cherished bands growing up and to date Doolittle is my favourite album. To catch the Boston legends on two occasions was an absolute [...]
I recently finished re-watching the first five seasons of Lost in preparation for tonight, the premiere to the sixth and final season. I'd greatly underestimated the amount of popular music used in the series, though the total amount of songs spanning the five season still falls just shy of 50. But I guess when you've got a composer the caliber of Michael Giacchino ( Up ) at your disposal, there's not as much call for it. People still listen to music, though, and even after Hurley's batteries died, the music played on. Witness the opening [...]
