CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Tapes N' Tapes close their Twin Cities tour tonight @ The Turf Club. They also made a great local mix-tape which you can find below for a very limited time. Don't hesitate as they will be removed soon. in celebration of our tour of the twin cities we put together a mixtape of our 'tourmates' and some of our favorite bands from minneapolis/st. paul. thanks to all of the bands for giving us permission to give you their songs. grab it fast, cause it's only gonna [...]

Both A.J. Crandall and Jennifer Kirk will be reporting live from Manchester on Bonnaroo 2009 for Hidden Track and Glide Magazine. We've asked each of them to write a preview of what the weekend will hold for them. Today we'll share A.J.'s look at Bonnaroos past (2007, 2008) and future... I've got some packing to do. I just looked it up. Southwest airlines lets you take two bags free. Last month's trip to NY, on two airlines that'll go nameless for now, [...]

As many of you have noticed, we've revamped a bit here at MFR. As a result, some of our archiving has gone a bit goofy. Which many of you have noticed in regards to my "On the Road" mixes (thanks for all of the emails and tweets, you know who you guys are). So, I thought I would quickly repost all of the On the Road mixes (not 8, because I just posted that) in this one place. These date back quite a while, so I hope you enjoy them! On the Road Mix No. 7 [...]

Every music blogger will feel the Maestro's pain when it comes to the overly-packed in-box. Filled to the brim with PR's showcasing that "hot new indie artist" whose bandwagon you just HAVE to jump on early, "exclusive" remixes that have obviously been CC'd to damn near everyone else on the Hype Machine/ Elbo.ws circuit, the endless announcements of new mixtapes and video releases and numerous follow-up artist representatives stressing you out over whether you finally got a chance to listen to their respective act's material, it's almost impossible to get through all of it and live a normal [...]
The Star Tribune has published their annual Critics Tally of the year's best local albums (songs/live acts list here ). No surprise to me (although predictable and imo a tad overrated album) that Atmosphere took the #1 spot, but other than that I have very few complaints about the results ;). Here is my full ballot: Best Local Albums of 2008 1. Crescent Moon Is In Big Trouble 2. The Absent Arch - Keep Calm And Carry On 3. Solid Gold - Bodies [...]

Hi Folks! Once again it's time to sum up the past year. The most interesting events in 2008 would be... G'n'R finally released Chinese Democracy and the world economic crisis striked even the music industry :) And yes, we had a plenty of good releases to enjoy in 2008... In 2008, the number of music submissions to Indie Surfer increased substantially, so I was not able to check them all and answer to them. I'll try in the future to find some way to cover as much submissions as possible, but it will also depend on my free [...]
Excuse the gush, but how freaking good has the last month been for new releases? My top 10 for 2008 as it stood at the start of October has basically been pillaged and burned to the ground by the newies from Department Of Eagles, Brightblack Morning Light, Deerhunter, Girl Talk, Frida Hyvonen, The Plastic Constellations and Blitzen Trapper, as well as the all-killa-no-filla debuts from the Alcohotlicks and the Menahan Street Band. THANX FOR THE GOOD TIMES, MUSIC. Anyone else feeling the love? We'd sure like to know.
How did you get into making music, and how did arts education (or lack thereof) affect you and your music? I got into making music pretty much because of the band program in my grade school. My folks really wanted me to learn an instrument, and I decided that the saxophone looked pretty awesome. I started in fourth grade and really enjoyed it. I had always really loved music, and it was sweet to be able to actually learn songs (especially the Pink Panther theme, which I totally ruled at). Embarrassing side note: [...]
