MUSIC NEWS - Gibson Guitar's factory in Nashville, TN was raided this week by local police and federal agents over the company's alleged use of rainforest wood used in the manufactuing of its' guitars. The agents seized wood, guitars, computers and boxes from the Gibson facitity. Reports are that the factory was searched under the Lacey Act, which attempts to tackle the trafficking of illegal wildlife, plants and fish. The search, carried out by the Fish and Wildlife Service, was to look for the use of rosewood that has been illegally harvested [...]
I'm feeling quaint today. That is, I'm in a bit of an 80's way, which doesn't exactly compute with my standard MO. Maybe it's because anything 80's is now at least 20 years old and that's my watermark for feeling nostalgic. I permed my hair, had two piercings in my left ear and wore short sleeve shirts rolled up to the shoulder, had a haircut like George Michael. I didn't roll cigarettes into my sleeve - it was a little too James Dean for me - and that was not the look I was going for. (See above.) [...]

Zinc has been storming the dirty bass electro scene of late with an impressive run of floor filling bangers which have now been compiled into his recently released Crack House EP , and to further cement his rapid ascent in his new chosen genre he has banged out a massive 64 track Essential Mix. DJ Zinc - Essential Mix Tracklist 1. Geeneus ft Ms Dynamite – Get Low (CDR) 2. Zinc – Nu Sound (Bingo Bass) 3 Acid [...]

So about a month ago when I was scanning around for new music I downloaded a couple songs by this dude (Chris Glover) going by Penguin Prison. Well duh, I downloaded it, I'm mildly obsessed with penguins, so he had me there. Anyway, I just got around to listening to him more this week and it's safe to say he has my blessing. Seems heavily influenced by male pop acts from the 80s; a very George Michael, Police kind of sound. Penguin Prison - Animal Animal [...]
I usually star the Guardian's "Band of the Day" picks in my Google Reader and go back and listen when I have time. The best one I've run across lately is Paul Lester's pick of I Blame Coco , who just happens to be the daughter of Sting. Now, regardless of what you may think of Master Gordon Sumner or his myriad musical incarnations, his youngest daughter Coco, née Eliot Pauline Styler-Sumner, has an outstanding set of pipes. Like her father in his early days with the Police, she's obsessed with reggae-inflected pop, but she sells it [...]
Former Furious Styles members Miles Freeborn, Tony Reed, and Harris Richardson have spoken out against a t-shirt glorifying the recent killing of a Seattle police officer . All three have blamed vocalist Mike Torres for the shirt's creation, stating that they had no input into the shirt's creation and that if they had, the shirt would never have been released. It was not politically relevant or righteous. It was a brutal attack by an unorganized, deranged imbecile. We are sickened by the shirt's message and the fact that it now represents Furious [...]
Police say a gang in the Peruvian jungle has been killing people and draining fat from the corpses to sell on the black market for use in cosmetics, although medical experts say they doubt a major market for fat exists. You sure? I see the Kardashians as a fuckin' gold mine! We were selling rich women their own fat asses back to them. sound bite Narrator sound bites [...]

Russian police have arrested three homeless people suspected of eating a 25-year-old man they had butchered and selling other bits of the corpse to a local kebab house. Everyone knows that human meat is far superior when used with the szechuan style of cooking. moon unit : not zappa's daughter. but the three piece featuring nackt insecten's scrabbletastic ruaraidh sanachan on guitar (and not sitting on a rug full of overdriven twinkly things). they had the inevitable guy with table of wires and joyboxes. but really the show belonged to the fella on drums knocking buggery fuck out of his kit, percussing in a way somewhere between chris corsano and dave lombardo. hell's bells he can pound. epic and loud and freeform huge monstrous waves of cosmic doom and sonorous drone, sturm und drang and sometimes, sometimes veering almost nearly not quite [...]

Well, "Miley Cyrus Tour Bus Crash Kills One" is quite a startling headline to find first thing in the morning! ABC News reports that a tour bus belonging to the "Party In The U.S.A." starlet overturned on Interstate 85 in Dinwiddie, Virginia—about 40 miles south of Richmond—around 8:15 a.m. Friday morning. Miley was reportedly not on board the bus during the crash. Virginia police have yet to disclose the identities of anyone else on board. TMZ is also noting that the driver of the bus is dead, and that [...]
Over the past six months, San Francisco DJs have been claiming that their equipment has been seized by police in raids on DJ parties. Even bystanders at the events have had their DJ equipment, such as laptops, seized. The raids and seizures are apparently due to a lack of proper permits for these events, though the claiming and holding of property, reportedly up to three months in some cases, seems suspect. In one case, a benefit for a sculptor was broken up by the police, and laptops, mixers, and CD players were all taken, though the police apparently gave no [...]
As someone left T.I.'s Grand Hustle studio in Atlanta, they noticed a pair of suspicious looking bottles in front of the building. After contacting police, it was discovered that the bottles were two Molotov cocktails. Police are now investigating if the studio had any connection to the explosives. The studio is disputing the claims, saying that the bottles were not in front of the building, but merely in the same vicinity. The presence of these weapons even near Cliff Harris' studio in wake of his incarceration on weapons charges shines a disconcerting light on the Atlanta rapper and [...]

It's never easy to map out an entire decade in music. So, in constructing the "Decade in Music" interactive timeline , we sought to shape it with some of the bigger tent-pole trends, news (Elton John performing with Eminem) and groundbreaking changes in the industry, business and technology (Napster, the iPod). We also wanted to highlight albums (Britney Spears, Danger Mouse, Radiohead) that took a snapshot of the era, as well as deaths (Ray Charles, Johnny Cash) that affected everyone. And, of course, we wanted to include the occasional "wardrobe malfunction" controversy or bizarre curiosity ("Trapped in the Closet") [...]

Everyone's favorite movie about the 80's has to be The Wedding Singer. It is kind of unfair to include this in great 80's soundtracks because it could choose from any and all 80's songs but it is as far as I am concerned a greatest hits collection of awesome 80's hits. The movie was made in 1998 and basically sparked a new love affair with the previous decade. It pretty much was the inspiration for VH1's I love the 80's series and also turned the Wedding Singer into a successful broadway show. Kind of weird how that happened. But the [...]

photos by Matthew Taplinger It's A Trap : What does the name "A Camp" actually refer to? Niclas Frisk: We just decided that we would go up to the woods and do some songs, do some drawings, bake some bread and record some music. At some point Nina said that we were having a camp in the woods. And at the same time we were shopping in a supermarket and saw this maple syrup with [...]
One of the surprise debuts of last year had to be Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... , a talk show featuring Costello pulling off the rare triple threat: host, performer and bandleader. Equal parts interview and jam session, the Sundance series relies upon Costello putting the artists at ease, getting even the prickliest of artists to open up and speak warmly about their influences. But, as Martin Mull once famously quipped, "talking about music is like dancing about architecture," and so it's the tremendous musical performances sprinkled throughout [...]
