As part of our ongoing end-of-the-decade coverage, we sent out a survey to various people in the music, arts and entertainment communities. Here is another question we asked: What does "indie" mean to you? Discuss our respondents' answers and leave your own in the comments section. Douglas Wolk, writer: That's very simple. "Indie" is short for "independent." Independently released music is not directly financially dependent on any of the four major labels (WMG, Sony BMG, EMI and Universal). "Indie" does [...]
Legendary hard rock drummer Chuck Biscuits , whose lengthy résumé included stints in such flagship underground acts as Black Flag and Social Distortion , died Saturday after a prolonged battle with throat cancer. He was 44. "In response to the inquires, thank you for all the support," an anonymous family member wrote in an e-mail sent this morning. "Chuck did not survive his battle with throat cancer. He passed surrounded by his family on 10/24/09." Chuck Biscuits was probably best known to the general populous for his work [...]

As some of you may (or may not) know, I've been trying my hands at this "DJ" thing for the last 13 or so years. Once and a while, I like to share some of my favourite tunes, old and new, with the populous at large. This mix is more on the moody side of the techno spectrum. It starts out minimal elektro and morphs into some heavier techno stompers. Tracklist: 01. Boys Noize - Nerve 02. TakBam - Elektronische Tanzmusik 03. Extrawelt - Erste Unversicherte Allgemeinheit 04. Lucio & [...]
To be honest, State had been expecting the worst. Stood motionless on stage, dressed head-to-toe in black, and with a dour expression etched across his face to match his appearance, The XX 's Ollie Sim doesn't exactly come across as a bundle of fun. Despite cramming a good deal of Stradbally's temporary populous into the Electric Arena tent last month's Electric Picnic, Sim and his cohorts look almost embarrassed by the attention being given to them and their deceptively simple, sparse and lonesome bunch of songs. Throughout, you couldn't describe them as anything but glum. Despite this lack of [...]

Hailing from Gwinnett County, Georgia, fiddler Earl Johnson got the bug in his ear early on for raucous string band noise. He practiced furiously with his brothers Ester on guitar and Albert on banjo until 1923 when they both succumbed to an epidemic. In 1924 Earl joined Fiddlin' John Carson's Virginia Reelers and Arthur Tanner's Dixie String Band where he fine-tuned his fiddling prowess on stage and street. After nailing the Georgia state fiddle championship in 1926, Earl cut a mess of sides for the Okeh label with his newly formed Dixie Entertainers. In 1927 he ditched the [...]

I I have always sought to bring my mind close to the mind of Indian and Japanese poets, old women in Connacht, mediums in Soho, lay brothers whom I imagine dreaming in some mediaeval monastery the dreams of their village, learned authors who refer all to antiquity; to immerse it in the general mind where that mind is scarce separable from what we have begun to call "the subconscious"; to liberate it from all that comes of councils and committees, from the world as it is seen from [...]

Brooklyn Funk Essentials is the perfect name for a band that is so representative of the melting pot that is New York's most populous (and, I would humbly suggest, best) borough. Going strong since 1993, the acid-jazz ensemble boasts a long list of current and former contributors, including singers, instrumentalists and even poets from all over the world producing sounds derived from influences as wide-ranging as hip hop and traditional Turkish music. Founded by producer Arthur Baker, BFE even counts among its alums a pre-Cibo Matto Yuka Honda. Watcha Playin' , the band's first album since 2000, finds the [...]
If you think you're gonna become the next Kurt Cobain while you're squirreled away in an obscure corner of suburbia, you may have to think again. Hypebot is reporting on a pair of charts that show where you make music is, in fact, important, even in the age of the Internet. These charts come courtesy of Richard Florida' s Music & The Entertainment Economy Project at the University of Toronto's Rotman School Of Management. They show the size of music scenes measured by the number of musicians and [...]

Today I went for a drive deep into the heart of Antelope Valley to explore an area I will be writing about for my bi-monthly contributions to WFMU's Beware Of The Blog. To be honest, I'm not sure how that area could possibly be considered part of Los Angeles County. It's like the dark side of the moon compared to common conceptions about Los Angeles. It is well known that the county is the most populous in the entire country, and covers 4,000 square miles...but the city itself is so spread out, and all the surrounding cities are so populated, [...]
My first exposure to Mannequin Men was accidental. As a junior at the University of Chicago, I went to see the Ponys, one of the Chicago's more recognizable indie-rock bands at the time. The Ponys were preceded by a band that I had been hearing a lot about lately: the Black Lips. But the band that trumped them both was Mannequin Men, four guys with no real schtick who dominated the set with the best garage tunes, the best chops, and the best swagger of the night. As soon as I got home, I raced to Mannequin [...]

Wake up one morning to the smell of smoke, look out the window and everything once known is set ablaze. The skies bleed red as the ocean melts into the populous. Steel crumbles beneath the ground into the lava while the remaining folks in your position share the common memory that is your collective destruction. Boogie Boarder have stolen my heart. Lyke omg it's lyke 1f Wavves ( Juavves ) was in that band Ponytail or s0mething. Boogie Boarder - Bio Hassle Boogie Boarder - Pig Pile part 2 [...]
If they're not on the tip of your tongue already, or at least filed someplace within the recesses of your brain, you need to get yourself educated with the band Rock Plaza Central. The band's last album, 2007's "Are We Not Horses" garnered them all sorts of critical acclaim and attention, to the point of scoring a Best New Music tag from Pitchfork. For a concept album about a mechanical horse who questions his own artificial intelligence, people were looking past the abstract themes and into the depths of some eccentric music making that was strangely brilliant. On paper, Rock [...]
Canadian-based singer-songwriter Jason Collett will be joining The Weakerthans this summer on their July tour. Collett is a member of hugely-populous Broken Social Scene and will be promoting his latest Arts And Crafts release, Here's To Being Here....
I had a much more difficult time compiling the list this week than I did last week, and I have several theories why. Most importantly, I blame the fickleness of the British music press. They are always in such a rush to heap praise on the latest thing to come along (and all to often turn on these same bands within about 3 months of their debut release), meaning that many, many bands get hyped at some point or another as the next big thing. Most of them don't make it, but they are often far from overlooked. Add to [...]
-- LINER NOTES -- Measure for Measure Frank Hoffmeister, tenor Brooklyn Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra Shakespeares' plays contain many references to music. In this composition, appropriately entitled "Measure for Measure", Lukas Foss uses excerpts from: The Tempest --What harmony is this?... Merchant of Venice --The man that has no music in himself... Twelfth Night --If music be the food of love, play on... Hamlet --O, the recorders! Let me see one... Merchant of Venice --I am never merry when I hear sweet [...]
[mp3] Lissy Trullie: "Boy Boy" Any readers of this site will know that we fell hard for Lissy Trullie last year, and we couldn't be happier that she has began to catch on with the populous. Today, Stereogum premiered the video for "Boy Boy" one of the best tracks off of her recently released EP Self-Taught Learner which has manged to persevere as one of my favorite releases of '09. Enjoy.
As if the US foreign policy's reputation wasn't tarnished enough, things like these still pop up to show the world how a big chunk of the American populous believe they are on some holy quest of sorts with those meaningless wars Bush has started but never finished. Now these troops are going around Afghanistan handing out bibles translated in Pushtu and Dari to citizens and label them as "gifts." They say the are on a "hunt for Jesus." What a great choice of words. Now that Obama's in office, a man that understands and respects everyone's belief system, [...]
