We didn't have time to squeeze this into the paper, but there are two hip-hop shows of note tonight and tomorrow, both featuring Tash of the Alkaholiks and Prince Po. For this we can thank PDX hip-hop mogul My-G and his faithful companion DJ Wicked, who host tomorrow night's big show at the Crown Room. See the flier below for tomorrow's show info. But if you're under 21, or just have some free time this evening, howzabout checking out Prince Po, Tash, Black Silver, Main Flow, Kiew Nycon and Sleep at 7 pm tonight at Someone [...]

I've learned writing this tour blog that I'm unfairly prejudiced against Juggalos. (And I'll admit it when I'm wrong. Juggalos are awesome people and they mean us no harm, right?) Writing this blog has been like a journey of humbling, personal awakening. Because now I've learned that I was also unfairly predisposed to think that our four shows in Texas would be a little…rough. One was, after all, in a saloon and another one in a sports pub. But I cannot express how pleasantly, happily, wonderfully surprised we all were! [...]

This week, our podcast features Thao with The Get Down Stay Down , a trio led by San Francisco singer-songwriter Thao Nguyen. Nguyen and her band (comprised of Adam Thompson on bass, keys and guitar, and Willis Thompson on drums and percussion) first attracted widespread attention with last year's We Brave Bee Stings and All on Kill Rock Stars. The album introduced Nguyen as a commanding songwriter, skillfully crafting melodic folk-rock with clever, intimate lyrics. The group supported the record with relentless touring, which gathered them many new fans and [...]

The holidays are just around the corner. No, really, I'm not messing with you. It's Thanksgiving in just nine days! (please don't try to email me on Black Friday, I'll be passed out in a pile of gravy). So that also means it's time to bust out all your favorite Xmas and Hanukkah sweaters and get ready to rock out with your cello out. For the second straight year, the Portland Cello Project—you might have seen its lively tour blog around these parts—is hosting a big ol' holiday bash. Only instead of an awkward gathering of relatives, this [...]

Toronto: The caveat to Toronto's wonderfulness is that there was a cat in the venue who freaked out during Thao's set crying "MEOW!!!" really loudly over and over again. And then as we played a scent rose through the stage of ammonia cat urine—completely awful. The owners said the cat was just spooked, which was fine, but it smelled really bad. Adam Thompson—Thao's bass player—hates cats. When I first met him he talked to me about how cats have this microbial parasite issue in their poop so that, if you accidentally ingest any [...]

"HAPPY F*IN' HALLOWEEN, JUGGALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS!!!!!" This low, bellowing voice was the greeting of a big bald dude in the middle of a wrestling ring with "Hallowicked" painted on the side of it. The packed hive of demented clown people cheered back. If my 5 hour perspective on Detroit is accurate (and I'm hoping it's not), the population of Detroit is distributed roughly: 0.5 parts hipster; 3 parts panhandler; and 1209812091724019842 parts Juggalo. I've never played a show with a paper thin wall separating me from an Insane Clown Posse after party on Halloween (complete with wrestling ring [...]

Frank Yang If I'd managed to get to the El Mocambo on Sunday night in time to catch first act David Schultz & The Skyline , I think I could legitimately lay claim to have seen the longest bill - in character count, at least - of all time. But it didn't happen so I had to settle for just one of the longest in recent memory, thanks to Thao with The Get Down Stay Down and The Portland Cello Project . As the more insightful might have discerned, The Portland [...]

Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2009 NOAH AND THE WHALE @ MERCURY LOUNGE 217 East Houston Street Manhattan, NY 10002 $15, 7:30PM We've been holding off recommending Noah and the Whale as they played three nights at Mercury Lounge. This is the last of their three nights with Robert Francis at the Lower East Side venue. Though tonight also joining the bill will be Sharon Van Etten , which totally makes this show worth the $15 cover price. The Mary Onettes @ Union Hall The Invisible @ Brooklyn Bowl She Keeps [...]

The Get Down Stay Down . Know Better Learn Faster é o título do novo disco, disponível agora através Kill Rock Stars e que inclui o tema Cool Yourself. Uma canção orelhuda e bem-disposta [...]

Chop Suey was a nice, intimate setting for this show. The three bands that played this Thursday night appeared to know each other well, and the small room allowed them to call to the stage friends from the crowd and members from other bands. Not all of the show was ground breaking or what I would call top-notch performance, but the room was packed for the final band, Thao With the Get Down Stay Down , and the wait was worth it. David Schultz , a solo acoustic guitarist from Richmond, VA, hit [...]

So why not send our former intern, Jenny Booth, to a festival in the UK, right? Heck, if it helps her with a press pass, we feel pretty damn good about it. -Ed. Having studied my degree in Cardiff—and always longed for a music festival on my doorstep—it was downright mean of Swn Fest's organizers to start it up the year I left school. Three years on, though, and I'm finally in the right place at the right time—if a little apprehensive as to how one of the world's smallest capital cities will rival last months [...]

By Jon Stone Before the show Thursday night, I spent some quality time with Thao Nguyen's catalog. I'd never seen her play before and I felt obliged to do my homework and gather some things to look forward to. I'm a fan, to be sure—though, I'll admit to a small, preexisting hang-up related to Thao's vocal style. My favorite female artists are those with huge voices— Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond and Annie Clark of St. Vincent come to mind (apparently, former Sufjan Stevens back-up singers need only [...]
When I spoke to Thao Nguyen she was prepping to leave on a five-week long tour to promote Know Better Learn Faster . The album is Thao's second release with The Get Down Stay Down, and it features a number of guest appearances, including Andrew Bird and Laura Veirs. Despite her busy schedule, she was still kind enough to chat with me about the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, her undying love for girl group harmonies, and the dressing rooms at Red Rocks. You went to the Rock 'n' Roll Camp [...]
