The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]

I was so taken with the new album from Seattle band, Curtains For You - I got to interview both Matthew Gervias and Peter Fedofsky for Power Popaholic. You can click on the Artists Interview button or go to this link: Curtains For You interview. If you didn't catch the album review you can find it here. In my busy travels before IPO I got the chance to pose some questions to Shawn Fogel, aka Golden Bloom . He's got some pretty interesting things [...]

I don't like hard, heavy death metal. But boy if I did I'd have it made. There is so much Swedish death metal I would never have to worry about having music for a post. Add to that the Swedish hardcore and most embaressingly the Swedish mascara emo and I'd be fine for posts through 2012 (or as we like to say "the apocolypse"). With that said I do like music with crashing hooks and a slightly heavier sound like Urge Overkill meets The Posies type of thing. So it was easy for me to agree [...]

For fans of Capeverdean music, 2009 was a fascinating year. Four of the country's top divas, Mayra Andrade, Sara Tavares, Lura, and even the greatest of them all, Cesária Évora, released captivating albums that further cemented their credentials as exceptional musicians. Pick a song at random from any of those CDs and I bet they'd be splendid. Stória, Stória by Mayra Andrade had such gems as Turbulensa and Palavra, Sara's Xinti with the beauties So d'Imagina and Di Alma, Lura's Eclipse featuring Libramor and Terra'l, and Cesária's Nha Sentimento highlighting the interesting fusion of Egyptian string instruments with morna in [...]

If you're at all familiar with the sordid past of psych-rock pioneer Roky Erickson , than you know that it was only a few years ago that the possibility of ever seeing him perform live seemed about as likely as a warm winter in Toronto. His heavily permissive lifestyle back in the 60's while he was the leader of seminal psychsters the 13th Floor Elevators led to his being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1968, resulting in jailtime, electroshock therapy, and even a brief stint where he believed that aliens were coming to Earth to do him harm. It [...]

Rich album of melodic pop The Internet has given public voice to thousands of musicians whose work would otherwise be heard only in live performance or on spottily self-distributed CDs. The downside is that the lowered barrier leaves consumers and reviewers besieged by a multitude of voices that often drown one another out. The artist's problem has shifted from breaking through the record labels' distribution monopoly to standing out in a very large crowd. The upside is that some of this DIY music is as good or better than that being pushed by commercial [...]

When Laura Ann Masura's longtime friend Josiah Mazzaschi heard she had been injured in a motorcycle accident, he didn't sit on his hands. He got on the phone. Mazzaschi, the frontman of local indie-rock band Light FM , has organized a benefit concert, Jam for Laura Ann, on Sunday at the Echoplex to help Masura, a fellow musician and also a bartender at the downtown's Redwood Bar, defray some $15,000 in medical expenses. The 5 p.m. show ($12) features a heady cast of performers, including the Backwards Clock Society, featuring Billy Corgan along with Kerry [...]

THE RUMBLE: SEATTLE is back TONIGHT @ The Crocodile for another FREE night of music by bands on the rise, brought to you by a collective of partners that prove indie rock can support indie rock > Future Sounds, WOXY, The Stranger, Line Out, Easy Street Records, Spin Magazine & Spin Earth and The Wig . Headlining the evening is the Seattle based act, HOTELS , a band we've been smitten by since the moment we first heard "Kite Fight ". To learn more about [...]

Let me be honest: I've known of the existence of both Husker Dϋ and Pavement for about as long as I've known what music was, but I've never really explored what either band sounded like. They're both obvious icons of the indie-rock world, and for that I've always held respect for them, but have just never really took the time to listen to their music. Then I discovered Scott Kannberg—former guitarist for Pavement—and his newest project, Spiral Stairs . I was absolutely blown away, and even more so when I found out they'd be playing [...]

Man, am I pissed with myself for forgetting my camera last night. I've seen Ken Stringfellow play with The Posies and R.E.M. many times over the years, so I knew going in that he was an energetic live performer. However, with The Posies, Ken is somewhat limited in terms of how crazy he can get by the fact that he plays guitar; and with R.E.M., he's merely a supporting player whose his job-title requires him to stand in the back corner of the stage and play tasteful keyboards. Not [...]

One of the things we like best about being part of this biz, is when we realize that a lot of the artists we love, are actually just real people. People who care about others. Work hard to help each other. That's certainly the case here. Dozens of musicians will perform a benefit concert Sunday November 8 at the Echoplex in Echo Park for fellow musician Laura Ann Masura. Masura, a former member of Evil Beaver , Motorhome , the Prescriptions and Dime Box Band , suffered a motorcycle accident in September [...]

Just a friendly reminder about a show I told you about a couple days ago . The Disciplines , featuring Ken Stringfellow of The Posies, are playing tonight at Subterranean with Scott Lucas & The Married Men and TAFKAVince And The Nuclear Power Pants. Doors are at 9pm, show starts at 9:30pm. You should really go.

The St Jeromes Laneway Festival has always held a special place in YATM's heart... especially the Melbourne event.. The central business district of Melbourne Australia is a treasure trove of little laneways covered in street art, hole in the wall bars, cafes and one of our favourite places to photograph. Many a time whilst wandering we have come across random gigs, one that stands out was a rocking set we happened across in AC/DC lane during the busy lunch hour of the business day, it was all going on... We here at YATM just love music played [...]

WHO: The Disciplines are the new(-ish) rock band featuring Ken Stringfellow, one-half of one of my personal favorite bands of all time, The Posies . The band, which features Ken on vocals and three musicians from the Norwegian band Briskeby , released its debut album, Smoking Kills , on Second Motion Records earlier this year. (Buy it at Lala.com for just $9.43.) This is their first North American tour. They made their U.S. debut yesterday [...]
Following two releases as Preston School Of Industry, Spiral Stairs (Scott Kannberg to his mum) releases his first album under that particular moniker, but it's certainly not a solo album in the traditional sense. Indeed, the former Pavement stalwart roped in a motley collection of alt-rock luminaries, including former Preston School of Industry graduates, various members of The Posies (whose John Auer also mixed it) and Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew. Unlike many such all-hands-on-deck collections, however, the result is amongst the most coherent pieces of work Stairs has ever given us, even if it does recall the [...]
DON'T MISS ARMY NAVY AT THIS YEAR'S CMJ MUSIC MARATHON! LA's Army Navy released their self-titled debut album on their own label, The Fever Zone, in late 2008, an album that NPR described as "a Posies-and Teenage Fanclub-style tsunami of melody and distortion that underscores the youthful essence of power-pop in all its bittersweet glory" and Pitchfork declared a "bubbly effervescent valentine." After an appearance on last year's famed "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" soundtrack and a 73 release on Fierce Panda's Fandango Records in the UK, the band is currently taking some time writing and recording material [...]
Pavement co-founder Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg released a couple of impressive albums earlier this decade as Preston School of Industry. He reverts to his '90s moniker for the release Tuesday of "The Real Feel," which the Seattle-based guitarist made with assists from Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) and Jon Auer (the Posies), among others. It's introspective, '70s-feeling guitar rock with bite, not exactly the "brooding, depressing" music Kannberg has made it out to be, but still heavy enough that you know it's a breakup (actually, in his case, divorce) album. ||| Download: "Maltese [...]
Spiral Stairs is back with a new album. Previously recording as Preston School of Industry, the new album from Spiral (Scott Kannberg), is his first in 5 years. Here is a video from the new album, "The Real Feel", in the shape of "Stolen Pills". The album was actually recorded in Australia with help from the members of The Posies and Gersey. It is now out on Matador .
