Reuters goes for a clever pun that also points out a painful truth in their headline, Ringo Starr gets his Hollywood star at low-wattage ceremony A surprisingly low-wattage assortment of celebrities showed up to see the former Beatles drummer get his star outside the Capitol Records building, most of them holdovers from Roy Orbison's ceremony 10 days ago such as Joe Walsh, Jeff Lynne, David Lynch, Eric Idle and Barbara Orbison. Walsh, who recently became Starr's brother-in-law, addressed the 500-or-so fans, as did producer Don Was and folk musician Ben Harper [...]
While covering another artist last year, I came across another artist who caught my ears, playing a couple shows up in Vermont during the same time: Julia Brown. Hailing from Virginia and now residing in New York City, Brown falls into the singer/song writer catagory. Her 2008 album, Strange Scars , is her second album, and is an intense, emotional acoustic rock album. The press release for the album on her website notes: Your songs are just your life looking back at you, [...]
![Ariana Delawari [Feature]](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2322713_lg.jpg)
Ariana Delawari 's psychedelic folk is epic. Her voluble wail is filled with power and vibrato that's rarely matched. The only voice that comes close to possessing the strength of Delawari's is perhaps that of Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond). There's a lot of passion behind "San Francisco" that keeps the song unquestionably fresh, and it's a sound that populates her debut LP, Lion of Panjshir . Delawari's mark was made between Los Angeles and Kabul, Afghanistan. Ariana mixes a common sound - consistent vocal [...]
The Magnetic Fields' newest album, released Jan. 26 on Nonesuch, is a wide-reaching panorama of mystical folk, cerebral hootenanny and lyrical mastery that rides the spectrum from heartache to the spastic imagination of childhood. Strangely enough, the album is titled Realism . It's hard to articulate Stephin Merritt's wonderful capacity for adaptation and renewal. But if you had to encapsulate the philosophy of "Realism" in two lines, it would most likely be a couplet from the album's first track: [...]
Ed Sheeran is one of the music industries best kept secrets, why one of the major labels has not put a large advance in his hand and sent him to a studio I have no idea. His music is clever, witty sometimes way beyond his years. Last week he opened a show featuring Iglu & Hartley/New Politics at Norwich Art Centre, the place was half full when Ed started but by the end of his set it was packed. There are many reasons why Ed holds a crowd. [...]

Well, isn't this good timing. Just three days before the Winter Olympics start in Vancouver, BC, everyone's favorite punk band the Thermals have penned an ode to the land of hockey, poutine, and mounties. And in typical Thermals fashion it's fast, loud, and INCREDIBLY FUN. It also proves my theory that Hutch Harris can write a better song in 30 minutes than most songwriters can in two or three years. "Canada" is silly, loose, off-the-cuff, and so much fun to sing along to. The story goes that guitarist Harris was sitting in a van in Buffalo, waiting to cross the [...]

Former Iowa poet laureate Robert Dana died this weekend. The 80-year-old Dana had been battling pancreatic cancer. Still, he was writing up until the end. His most recent book, The Other, came out in 2009, and despite dealing with writer's block after its release, he was still working. I had the pleasure of interviewing Dana at his Coralville home in early 2009 for an article about the release of that book. As I wrote, you can stand at the back window of Dana's home, look into the ravine that serves as his backyard, and [...]

I'm attaching the press release below, so that you know what I know. But if this is at all a possibility, this is quite a bellwether warning for indie music retailers, as ear X-tacy is one the nation's most recognizable and lauded independent record retailers - a name that often finds itself in the same sentence as Electric Fetus and Amoeba Records... UPDATE: I will be attending this press conference and will be tweeting live on The Decibel Tolls Twitter John Timmons, founder of [...]

I know what you're thinking, " Man, I haven't read Alt-Press since I was 16 Man, I've never read that mall-punk rag Alt Press." Just hear me out. This is one article worth your click. This Moment in Black History's Lawrence Caswell talks in depth about race and rock music with Tim Karan for the web cover story, It Takes A Nation Of Millions-- Black punk and indie musicians on the scene's current state of race relations . Among Caswell's choice quotes is this one, on the birth of punk and its relationship to racism [...]
Press release just came in the post. Would've been a great gig, but the second paragraph more than makes up for it... "Due to unavoidable circumstances the Drop Haiti's Debt gig this Thursday in Vicar Street has been cancelled. A full refund for tickets purchased is available from the point of purchase. On a hugely positive note, at the G7 summit in Canada last weekend, world leaders indicated they are prepared to drop Haiti's debt in its entirety in the imminent future. Full information on the status of Haiti's debt will be posted on [...]
