E very genre of music has an ideal listening environment. Classical is best heard at a smyphony. Arena rock should be heard at, well, at a large arena. Electronic music? Nothing beats a dance party. But whether you're a club person, a bar junkie or a house party lover, you've probably encountered a lot of obnoxious people during your nights out. Below are nine of the people we hate most in no particular order. Got any good ideas for future lists you'd like to see? Send them over . [...]
click image to view artist in itunes Sounds like: At the Drive-In, Get Up Kids, Colour What's so good? Emocore! Okay, it isn't. But some of you might claim it to be borderline. I, however, would maintain that these guys bring a raw and exciting sound to an already well-travelled genre. And because that isn't the easiest thing to do, I feel as if this English post-punk/alternative trio, Tubelord , deserve to be featured on Indie Shuffle . Indeed, [...]
The xx + jj = whoa. This is not an algebra problem, though it may solve the puzzle of who jj is. The mysterious Swedish group, who have never revealed their identities, are making their U.S. debut this fall with another electronic band of the moment, the xx. Will they play behind a curtain? A U.K.-based electro group, the xx are making many Best of 2009 lists with their self-titled debut, and are touring with Friendly Fires this year and Hot Chip next April. The [...]
I wrote this post over a year ago - in August 2008, to be exact - after I got a cease and desist for posting a song by a girl named Gabriella Cilmi. For whatever reason, I didn't post this. Maybe I figured some mysterious record company man in a long black coat with scars on his face would whack me in the parking lot if I did. Not so worried about that now. And, if you don't mind me noting: as of today - November 20, 2009 - I haven't heard a lot [...]
Whether you followed Spin Magazine 's lead to boycott Radiohead's "special" sound , or you are willing to do anything for a Yorke solo, nothing can prepare you for such blasphemy. You may have seen this spunky blond girl portraying Miley Cyrus' best friend on Hanna Montana , perhaps you just noted the resemblance Emily Osment shares with her clairvoyant brother Haley Joel - either way, this video is hard to stomach regardless of the camp you represent. I suppose it is fathomable to grasp a tween pop newbie like Emily Osment [...]
Colin James is one of my all time favorite musicians and if you've been around my site for any length of time, you know I have mentioned him here and there. We go and see him every time he is in town and this tour is no exception. We just scored tickets for his second sold out show here in Victoria for February and I can't wait. He is supporting the release of his latest album which I'm going to cover in a future post. Colin James is an artist that Canadians know all about. [...]

The photographer in the "W" magazine flub involving Demi Moore is raising the stakes! Anthony Citrano called attention to the Photoshopped mistake on the front cover of the magazine, and now he's upping the ante. In an exclusive statement to Allieiswired , Anthony said this: While I really feel bad that Demi is on defense over this, I also don't like being accused of "bullsh*t." So, [...]
Just when you thought you'd had enough of indie bands covering Beyonce, UK up-and-comers the Big Pink come along with this cover of "Sweet Dreams" to confirm that you've had enough of indie bands covering Beyonce. To be fair to Big Pink, this cover doesn't seem like some offensive ironic crap; the band's far too melodramatic for that kind of thing. The problem with this cover is that it's too faithful to the original, without maintaining any of Beyonce's sass. This should go without saying, but if bands want to do Beyonce, they need to do it big. [ Stereogum [...]
William DeVaughn is quite possibly the coolest cat to remind us to be thankful for what we've got-way better than hearing mom chastise us for being a spoiled brat who refuses to eat meatloaf for dinner. Lo and behold, a suspect dinner was the least of it. There really are starving kids in Africa, and right here at home too (wherever home may be). And while we should be grateful for all we have, the best thing to do is spread the wealth-even if it's not financial. If you're looking to give back during the holidays, [...]

Email interview conducted by Josephine Tempongko ( DJ Pandai'a ). Mary Anne Hobbs is arguably experimental music's most seminal figurehead- having hosted BBC Radio 1's Experimental Show (formerly called Breezeblock ) for over 10 years, her relentless pursuit of the electronic underground's most ground-breaking and elemental sounds continues to reward the world with an opportunity to hear something that they've never heard before. From her beginnings covering rock music for the NME and Loaded magazine, to her third [...]
The Amherst trio had towers of amps stacked up all over the stage, including one that was pointed directly towards front man J Mascis, in case his monitors weren't providing him enough of his own guitar sound. And not having enough sound has never really been a problem for the group, and it certainly wasn't on this evening as the band tore through a fiery 90 minute set that spanned the band's entire career.
Miike Snow, " Black & Blue " (2009) find it on Miike Snow Listen, I never claimed to be the quickest draw in the music blog world. In fact, I kind of take pride in being a little behind where everyone else is, carefully choosing perfect bites instead of throwing out everything that's even remotely tasty. I think it's something that's kind of a problem in the world of music blogs. Everyone's that's [...]

I'm almost afraid to publish this, since I know I'll get all kinds of grief about it. Before you comment on what a dope I am for omitting Graduation/Fishscale/Speakerbo xxx/etc., please read the title of this post again. Only independent releases were considered. But this did include street albums and mixtapes. Another point: I debated whether to segregate out rap records, and decided to do so only because I haven't seen too many bloggers writing decade-rap lists, so I thought this might help fill a void. Okay, now you can tell me how little [...]

Beres Hammond feat. Buju Banton, Assassin & I-Octane - " Love In The Streets " Um, wow. Beres + Buju is already a problem ( exhibit A ). Heck of a posse cut. And if you ain't already know, Beres Hammond is a triple quintuple OG! Ma dukes used to blast his tunes around the crib all the time. Anyone with more info about this track feel free to drop a note in the comments. I suspect it's from a new Beres compilation of some sort but don't quote me. img/ olivia
It seems that after nearly three years of posting once or twice a week, I've gotten to the point where most of my new posts are revisiting bands I've mentioned before. That's alright. There's a lot of good stuff I've found since I last posted on many of them. Besides, December is almost here, and I'm planning to do the same thing I did last year for the holiday season. One festive song a day, through Christmas. Maybe in December I'll find some new bands, [...]

MP3: Pill - Pain In They Eyes one of the unofficial freshmen of '09 - been circling my radar since sometime in springtime. (May 21st according to my strict archives ). so, not long - but already it feels like he's the realest in the US right now . Erm. Maybe mention Freddie Gibbs in that sentence too. The cut. . . : my favourite off of his new tape. [...]
But who cares about my criticism? The whole thing descends into some kind of black-lodge balloon nightmare, the final song getting into 4/1, 4/1 open-chord lamentation—growling young men popping balloons in the dark against their bare chests like Glenn Danzig at his kid's birthday party. And I never even got to talk about the sinister rosebushes! They look like triffids that spit poison and kill! DUMP UR BOYFRIEND AGAIN FOR MIKKI AND THE MAUSES! BLAME ALL UR JOY ON MIKKI AND THE MAUSES!
ASCAP, BMI and SESAC are the three primary collectors of royalties for musicians and songwriters in the United States. When a song is played in movies, on radio or television, used in a jukebox, or played by a cover band in a bar, among other things, one of these organizations collects the money due for that use, and then gives a portion back to the songwriters. This arrangement is simple enough, but the logistics of determining fees, specifically regarding using songs in a live setting, may be hurting musicians. For any place that allows [...]
