![[DECADEnce] The Top 100 Albums of the 00s](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2251560_lg.jpg)
The end of DECADEnce may come a couple days late, as some of the massive pieces of writing I did last week, combined with a whole lot going on post-New Years pushed the time table for these lists back a little bit. At least it's finally getting done though, right? So what follows is the list that I consider to be the most important amid all the other lists I've written across the past 10 years. It is, after all, a grand summation of a decade's worth of fine records, these being the finest of the fine. Now before you [...]
Following our tradition on this blog, I've waited till after the whole wonderful Christmas experience is over to start finishing artwork and writing up lists. Following from this, it's entirely possible you've had enough of lists and countdowns, but I doubt it. I don't present this list as an absolute and exact account of the best music of the decade; that would be silly. But these are the albums that meant most to me, and in the decade where I moved from listening to albums to favouring songs, they meant a lot. There are three more lists coming [...]

Sufjan Stevens – Illinois Originally reviewed: 12 July 2005 Firstly, let's get a few facts straight: Illinois is the best album I have heard so far this year; Illinois is the best album I've heard in a long time; and that's not just my opinion either; many critics agree with me on this one. Also another fact: this could be the longest review I have ever written. Why? The album contains twenty-two songs, most of which are worth at least a page's discussion. However, I plan to [...]

</center< This week, we bring you Top 10 Albums from 2000-2009 lists as determined by Loud Loop Press editors and contributors. We continue our little end of the decade series called clichely & probably often incorrectly " Waxing The Aughts (Poetically) "... ...where we eschew impossible decade compiling lists and have the wonderful members of our community think back to some of their favourite albums from this past decade and say as many (or few) words about it as they like. This time, rotch remembers Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens... Take it [...]
- Sufjan Stevens - Come On! Feel The Illinoise!
- Sufjan Stevens - Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois
- Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy, Jr.

I've decided I have two more days of presents in me. The penultimate day's gift is a soundboard from Sufjan Stevens' Illinois tour, recorded live at Portland's Crystal Ballroom and if you've been keeping up with the other presents, this one sounds magnificent, as well. It's a fine tribute to a fine album and I hope it makes your day just a little brighter. Download it HERE . Tracklist: 01 -crowd anticpates- 02 Sister 03 The Transfiguration [...]
It's time yet again for EOY (that's "end of year" for newbies) lists! 2009 has been one of my busiest years, but in the midst of all that I've still been able to catch some great concerts, including a number of shows from newer, upcoming acts, which is something I haven't been able to do as much of in the past. I chose the 15 shows of 2009 that I loved the most for this list. Make sure to visit the musicforants.com flickr page to check out all my concert pictures from this year. 15. Cymbals Eat Guitars @ Pitchfork Festival (Chicago) [...]

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] [ #45-41 ] [ #40-36 ] [ #35-31 ] [ #30-26 ] [ #25-21 ] [ #20-16 ] [ #15-11 ] [ #10-6 ] Drum roll please.... 5. Illinoise - Sufjan Stevens (2005) Forget about simply putting out a concept album, Sufjan Stevens actually had the nerve to [...]

When I look back at the 4 years that this blog has been on the road I see a handful of bands that have made the experience all the more worthy. Bands that continually reach and affect those medically unclassifiable musical membranes that control goosebumps, hairs standing on end and cold shivers when it's 30C outside. Georgia's Venice Is Sinking are certainly one of them, there is something intangible in their makeup that reduces me to a sniffling baby everytime. My favourites up to their 2009 album 'Azar' had been 'Pulaski Heights' and (the best Christmas song Low never wrote) [...]

Lighting Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow A bass with one guitar string. A bunch of shitty drums. Playing in someone's kitchen in Lubbock, TX. Two RISDy dudes named Brian. Wonderful Rainbow was Lightning Bolt's quinceañera. It didn't just change the band forever, but everything that punk rock stood for and the way underground music would sound in the new millennium. (HW) Death [...]
It seems like often times the best art comes out of tragedy. Some of the most moving and emotionally stirring music in the last few years such as Funeral , "Casimir Pulaski Day" , The Meaning of 8 , or more recently Hospice , touch on feelings of loss, depression, and redemption. Sam Jacobs, singer-songwriter and frontman The Flying Change , draws from him caring for his wife, who suffers from excruciating back pain due to spinal nerve defects, and their shared experiences [...]

WFMU and The Free Music Archive are incredibly excited to announce a remix contest featuring Anti-Pop Consortium ! NYC's legendary hip-hop innovators are sharing hi-fi stems & a capellas from "Reflections", a cut off their brand new album Fluorescent Black ( Big Dada ). After five exploratory years apart, Beans, M. Sayyid, High Priest and Earl Blaize have re-joined forces to craft what may be their finest work yet. Now they're making multitracks from "Reflections" available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-Shar eAlike license, and we can't wait to hear [...]

(photo by dcdead ) I told myself I wasn't going to do a decades album list. I mean how can you really rank all your favorite albums over a period of ten years that isn't even completed yet? Over the last couple of months though, I found myself slowly beginning to compile a list of my albums from the 00's that I loved and I then I began chiseling the list down to around 50 albums. I guess my love for making lists got in the way of the logic and reasoning I had for [...]

Tor/Sufjan Stevens - The Tallest Man/I Like It ft. Grand Puba First off, happy halloween yo! This is one of the best mash-ups I've heard. Combining the wonderful instrumental work by Sufjan Stevens with those flowing lyrics arranged by Grand Puba. I'm a huge fan of mash-ups that combine two completely opposite types of music, rather than mixing two similar pop songs. Tor, you genius you. One of my favorite songs by Sufjan Stevens, "Casimir Pulaski Day" live: [...]
To say that I was excited for this show would be an understatement. In the weeks leading up to it I pulled all of Sufjan's records out and fell in love again. I laid on the carpet and read the lyrics along to Michigan and Illinoise (and realized that it'd been too long since I'd done that with any record), fell asleep listening to Seven Swans , and finally really fell for The Avalanche . It was a pretty rapturous couple weeks, and I'm not going to lie, I was [...]

As FILTER's resident Austinite, I hold a special place in my heart for the good ole' capital of the Lone Star State. Beloved public television music program Austin City Limits is currently celebrating its 35th season on PBS. 35!!! That's a whole lot of years. I grew up watching the show, as many did, but, because it filmed in my hometown, I felt especially attached to the show. Attending tapings, difficult and crowded as they were, was a chance at an exciting and intimate look at the performing artist. [...]

Sufjan Steven has been busy lately. Not so much with his 50 albums for 50 states project, but with two new projects. The first of which is The BQE : A mixed-medium artistic exploration of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The project originally manifested in the form of a live show, performed Nov. 1-3, 2007. The show consisted of an original film, directed and written by Stevens, accompanied by an orchestra performing a live soundtrack. The CD/DVD will be released on October 20, 2009. It will consist of a CD of the show's soundtrack, a DVD [...]

This morning my neighborhood is covered in a thin sheet of ice, each leaf coated and crackly frozen. After venturing outside to take this picture (and promptly slipping on the ice), I sit here with my coffee and warm up, cozy in my slippers and fuzzy clothes. As I read the newspaper it tells me that today is the anniversary of the death of Casimir Pulaski, a Polish gentleman I know nothing about other than that his day in March is the title of one of my favorite Sufjan Stevens songs. Something [...]

Moka is preparing a big end of decade list, so I thought I make few companion lists along with it. A look back and summary for where MdM has gone. Ani DiFranco - Cloud Blood To the Teeth ( Righteous Babe. 1999 ) To the Teeth is the last album I remember buying because I heard it on radio. I had been driving all day when this song come in and air changes. It is not just another tune, but [...]
