Now a decade after the release of her critically-acclaimed sophomore album, Haunted, Anne Decatur Danielewski, more commonly known as '90s alt-rocker Poe , is finally ready to re-emerge. In a recent interview with Spinner , the 41-year-old New York native explained that her extended hiatus was the result of a lengthy legal battle against her former label, Atlantic Records. The dispute ranged over Atlantic's refesual re-release her albums. "What I would say, in a nutshell, is very short and sweet: Myself as an artist was purchased as if a slave by a Texas oilman," [...]

So I have been wanting to post about this since Wednesday. I have listened to it as I sleep and let me tell you, it's quite relaxing My friend passed this along to me over Facebook and described it as "Super under the radar." This got me super excited. Now I have researched on the blogosphere and no one is exactly certain who this is. All we really know is that it is somehow connected to Animal Collective's Panda Bear AKA Noah Lennox (AKA RxRy?) Who knows. If [...]

The breakup of Radar Bros. in January 2008 was only a brief setback for singer/guitarist Jim Putnam. He's since changed the name back to Radar Brothers, recruited bassist Be Hussey and drummer Stevie Treichel and recorded new album The Illustrated Garden. The reincarnated band—augmented live and on future recordings by Brian Cleary (Movies) and Dan Iead [...]

Here's a new song from the Radar Bros . upcoming album, The Illustrated Garden . Estimated release is March 23rd, 2010. http://www.radarbros.com/ Radar Bros. - Horse Warriors (MP3)

It was a pretty big week for new music considering it's the first official work week of January. Of course, The Besnard Lakes promo that kicked off for their third album, The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night , was a wonderful surprise. Seems like the music industry isn't too concerned about timing when deciding when and how to launch their marketing initiatives. I think that's a good thing for everyone. Here's to a feedback-filled weekend as one of my favorite bands of all time, Sonic Youth, are in town. |||Download: "SOSMIX - [...]
Buying albums might be ever so passé, but that doesn't mean there still aren't quality new releases worthy of your dinero. Continuing with our theme of 2010 , we have identified 35 albums you'll probably want to buy over the next 365 days. Of course, since only about 1/4 of the albums that will be released in 2010 have actually been announced, this list is certainly heavily biased toward the first few months - though we tried to take into account some of the more realistic possibilities at the end - and subject to sudden change. But based on [...]

I strolled through the books of Job to unfold and open bibles / instead of hopin' on revivals. V/A: Hyperdub, 5 - 5 Years of Hyperdub [ Hyperdub ] This wasn't supposed to happen-what with Internet-era Jeremiahs prophesizing the demise of regionalism and the end of localized movements. Steve Goodman and company intuitively understood that change could come from keeping your head down [...]

This post is part of our "Top Albums of The Decade" series. Follow the series to read about the best music to grace our ears in the 2000s. ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes (Interscope Records) Remember when rock bands made albums and not just a collection of songs? Yeah, I don't either. Except for Trail of Dead's third outing, Source Tags & Codes. Not only is it one of the [...]

What a strange paradox! Every warrior on the path of knowledge thinks, at one time or another, that he's learning sorcery, but all he's doing is allowing himself to be convinced of the power hidden in his being, and that he can reach it. ~Don Juan Matus, The Power of Silence Dead Prez - "Hip Hop" "Dead Prez is an American underground political hip hop duo composed of stic.man and M-1. They are known for their confrontational style [...]

Mayer Hawthorne - A white, thirty year-old soul singer and DJ from LA, Mayer Hawthorne (born Andrew Mayer Cohen) would seem to be an unlikely pick to record one of my new favorite debut albums, but the (almost) one-man band has proved himself a genuine talent with his recently released first effort, A Strange Arrangement . Cohen's croon has drawn comparisons to the like of Smokey Robinson (among others), which is no small compliment, and throughout this debut he uses his smooth tenor to nail a variety of classic pop and R&B styles, which [...]

Hailing from Chicago's West Side the YellowHammers have being around since 1994 but have managed to fly under my radar until now, the band are set to release their self-titled fourth album later this month. The band are Terry White (guitar, harmonica, vocals), Rob Pierce (vocals, guitar), Kevin James (bass, vocals), Phil Levin (drums), Tom Kneesel (pedal steel, guitar), the eleven track album includes a faithful cover of R.E.M.'s ( Don't Go Back to) Rockville and ten originals. [...]

Who? Portrait of David What? Melancholic Slowcore Sounds like? Low, Spain, The White Birch So, I started this way too confusing attempt to trade all my unwanted cds that keep piling up in my room for ones that are more suited to my taste, and I had no reponse this far. Logically, cause it's way too confusing. And the list is too long. So i decided to just introduce all these bands on my blog, so that if you listen to [...]

Where have all the car bras gone? Did they leave embarrassing tan lines and end up in a landfill somewhere? Did cars become chubbier, unable to squeeze back into their old cup size? Did highway patrol technology finally catch up with the radar-absrobing car bra and ruin the party? A cursory survey of cars parked on the mean streets of downtown Jersey City revealed the following: 0% cars with bras (left) 1% cars with the De-Fender (right) Is the De-Fender [...]

Local Natives Are Doing the Spaceland Residency This Month Last week I managed to see Radar Bros. and the Minor Canon. It was great to hear some new Radar Bros. songs and see the Minor Canon with a string section. On Friday night I saw Japandroids and Future of the Left. Both bands reminded me of a lot of the stuff I used to listen to in college. I'm not sure I've ever seen so many audience members take off their shirts at an indoor club in Los Angeles. Guess it was hot [...]

[Happy birthday, Juliana Hatfield, and thanks for songs.] July goes out with a bang this week, starting with some enticing shows tonight: Jarvis Cocker headlines the Wiltern behind his recent release "Further Complications," an album that, owing to the strength of its storytelling, keeps on giving. [Cocker is giving away a remix of "You're in My Eyes (Discosong)" here .] ... I also haven't been able to stay away from "Alone," the new album from New York-based Australian psych-rockers the Morning After Girls [...]

Malkmus was a bit disappointing on Saturday night. But on to this week.... Monday 7/27/09 [Pick of the Week] Radar Bros . / The Minor Canon / Dragging An Ox Through Water @ Bordello ($5) - Two of my favorite current bands. [Recommended] Jarvis Cocker / Little Joy @ The Wiltern ($5 if you're a Citicard member / $35 otherwise) The Mekons / The Pulsars / Bollweevil @ The Echo [...]

How could a 48-song box set from my favorite French band Phoenix have been released under my radar last month? Maybe I don't know them as well as I thought. For a band that's only released a handful of records (four, actually), it seems a little too soon for a box set, but it's actually a different kind of set. The Wolfgang Diaries compiles 48 B-sides and demos exclusively from their new (and best) record Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix . To call them songs is extreme considering they are mostly 20-second snippets, instrumental interludes, and skeletal versions of [...]
It shouldn't be any surprise that xxMerge , which begins tonight over in Chapel Hill, is this week's go-to event. Unfortunately, unless you already have tickets, you're not likely to actually go-to it, because it's sold out and (judging from a quick Craigslist perusal) there aren't many re-sale tickets out there. There will be a "limited number" of tickets available each night at the door, but I get the feeling that people will be lined up all day for each of these, so keep that in mind. There are a few free official and un-official xxMerge-related [...]
