Totally random photo: Moulin Rouge, Paris May 2009 I'm house sitting this week, and for a little while earlier my laptop refused to hook up to the wireless setup here. You can imagine my despair as I pictured the week stretching before me, a barren wasteland. Just imagine! I'd be forced to resort to other ways to pass my time, like talking to people and reading books and interacting with the outside world. Perish the thought. Anyway, the internet here is behaving now, and so I thought I'd offer up a few links that [...]

Last week was my first week of downsizeism, and I have been working hard to stay positive and do all the things one is supposed to do. I told everyone I'm looking for work, I filed for unemployment, and one day I even went to a networking group I'd heard about. They meet twice a month in a cafe near my house, so I ambled down and walked in to find a dozen middle-aged suburban white ladies sitting in a circle. They asked me what I did for a living, and I said I was an editor, and it turned [...]
It's a beautiful day, warm and sunny. It's a beach day. It's a deck day. It's a day to be outside. Some people wouldn't touch the foods I've eaten on my travels, let alone taste them. They might even gag at the notion. I don't consider myself a picky eater, but, after saying that, I have to admit I have foods I'll never eat. The thought of them makes me screw up my face in disgust. I might even gag at the notion. I don't like olives or beets. I don't like peaches. They have furry skins. I [...]
Way over in Reseda, miles away from the joints I usually frequent and deep in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, Vinh Loi Tofu is serving up some of the best sandwiches in town for well under 10 bucks. The modest vegan Vietnamese eatery is definitely off the beaten path, but redeems itself by offering several different banh mi subs stuffed with animal-free versions of chicken, beef, tuna, ham and curry meatballs...all of which are reasonably priced and insanely delicious. Curry Meatball Chicken Sub. $6.50 [...]

My favorite restaurants in NYC Spotted Pig and Cafe Habana I now only need to travel to NY for the former. Cuz motherfuckin Cafe Habana is comin to LA. I got a press release in my mail today. I hate those things, but this one mentioned Cafe Habana and I was hooked from there. I'll just copy and paste the press release below. But I figure the Title is all you really need to know about this little post. Eco-restaurateur Sean Meenan is as earnest as [...]

Tacos de camaron! That's deep-fried, right? "Yah." OK, add one of those as well. Here I am rolling the dice at an incredibly goofy-looking truck just off Sixth street. Let's do this and get it over with... TRUCK NAME The Surfer Taco LOCATION Sixth @ Witmer (a few electrifying blocks west of the 110) (Pacific Dining Car-adjacent) DID THEY TWITTER YOU THE LOCATION? LIKE THE KOGI? [...]

Last year, I had the pleasure of having the French government pay me to review an absolutely ridiculous music festival in Rennes. This year, of course, we couldn't go. Thus, we mourned for 5 days here at A&SB , being mentally unfit to post and all. Here's what I thought of it then, posted here as a tribute to what was the most amazing weekend of music and drunkeness imaginable. RENNES, France — I wouldn't recommend making the trip to Trans Musicales at the outskirts of Rennes on anything but [...]

Our favorite songs about books everyone. 1. Akron/Family - Franny/You're Human "Please Lord give me strength to be nobody 'cause I am not my thoughts' ( "Franny and Zooey" by J. D. Salinger ) 2. Modest Mouse - Bukowski [...]

I think it's high time I pointed you all in the direction of some of the cool stuff I've come across lately during my blog explorations. Captain Obvious is the man behind one of my favourite daily reads. Not only does he regularly review new albums and introduce me to tons of stuff that I've never heard of, he also posts videos (that I can never watch properly thanks to my slow internet), reviews films and puts together the odd Covers Mixtape . And we all love a good cover now, don't we? This latest mixtape is [...]
