"Hearts of Palm" - Ravens & Chimes Cheerful songs are usually vigorous things. Songs that seem hesitant, wavery, or otherwise introverted, on the other hand, tend to be at best wistful if not downright mournful. "Hearts of Palm" subverts the formula, and is all the more effective for it--a sprightly, hopeful-sounding song edged by an equivocal, somewhat trembling vibe. Some of this is due to the vocal qualities of Asher Lack, who sings like someone wading into cold water, at once timid and determined, while instruments chug forward [...]
Way back when this blog was first cutting it's teeth I had the pleasure of catching New York's Ravens & Chimes at the Rock and Roll Hotel in DC. Needless to say it was an amazing... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

I have little doubt that if Edgar Allen Poe were alive today, New York's Ravens and Chimes would be one of his favorite indie bands. The lush and moody group are working on their sophomore album, and have decided to offer up a track for CMJ week. A couple of Seattle artists have new albums out via Cheap Lullaby Records. Tim Wilson and Ryan Carbary are Ivan & Alyosha(I wonder why they couldn't just be Tim and Ryan?) and their new album is called The Verse, The Chorus. It's getting terrific reviews and some comparisons to a slower variation of the The Shins , which can't be a bad thing. Call me overworked, but it even sounds a little early Beatles-esque to me. Josh Ottum and a rather large group of musicians, including a couple borrowed [...]

Ravens and Chimes | Mercury Lounge | October 23, 2009 Friday night was a weird night at CMJ. Though I spent most of my time at Cake Shop, it was a little too crowded to get good photos. However, I did sneak out down the street to catch Ravens and Chimes at Mercury Lounge. The act were part of a massive eight act showcase--though I don't think it had any particular name. Check out some photos from Ravens and Chimes below. www.ravensandchimes.com | www.betterlookingrecords.com/

Looking through the archives, it seems like I never got around to posting about Ravens and Chimes a couple years back when they had a very nice little indie-pop record called Reichenbach Falls , in particular the jaunty and emphatic "General Lafayette! You Are Not Alone." Oh well. Consider this a much belated recommendation. But in blog-world two years is a lifetime, so obviously the only reason I bring this up now is that the band is back with another perfect little slice of quirky and melodic guitar pop. [...]

Two years ago, Brooklyn's Ravens & Chimes released their debut album 'Reichenbach Falls', full of stunning, catchy songs and brilliant lyrics. They're currently working on a new album and will soon return with a 7'' single called Hearts Of Palm / Clarissa Explains It All. Hearts Of Palm - Ravens & Chimes Enjoy, Graf click click ... Well look at that, It's already that time of year again: C - M - J ! Version 2009 to be precise. And you know the last thing we want is to send you off into the trenches unprepared and indecisive, which is why we're back again with yet another comprehensive plan of action/preview/treasure trove of MP3s to help nudge you through the week ahead. Just as with prior CMJ and SXSW previews, we listed only one show for each recommended band. Most of the bands listed here are playing several – if [...]

The new Ravens & Chimes song finds the New York band in a different mood than their usual autumnal, post- Funeral blues. "Hearts of Palm," in fact, finds frontman Asher Lack and company sounding downright joyful. Could it be Where The Wild Things Are ? Signs of life in healthcare reform? The abundance of pumpkin ale? The abundance of pumpkin everything? Whatever it is, let's hope it's as contagious as swine flu. (New Yorkers: the band plays CMJ this Friday at the Mercury Lounge at 8:30. I expect a full report.) Ravens [...]
It is my pleasure to share with you a new mp3 from Ravens & Chimes, from the album their currently working on (no release date as of yet). They'll be playing CMJ on the night of October 23rd at Mercury Lounge. And keep your eyes peeled for a new behind-the-scenes video (I know, it's long overdue) of Ravens working on one of the other songs from that album, Hearts of Palm [mp3]

You wouldn't know it from the best-of-decade lists flying around these days, but alt.country remains alive and well. The genre's latest vital release (and Canada's latest display of domination in any genre involving acoustic guitars) is The Wooden Sky's If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone , a collection of dusty barroom anthems and lovelorn hymnals with instant appeal. It's a workmanlike, emotive album, guided by the sure hand of producer Howard Bilerman (Ravens & Chimes, Arcade Fire) - and one fans of Nelson's poor-selling sad songs and waltzes won't want to miss. The band plays the [...]

The band have been going through a few personnel changes recently, and though I've yet to see them with the new lineup, I'm sure they are as good as ever. CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
