Usually three songs into a Raveonettes record, you can pretty much bet your wages, your house and a few vital organs on what the remaining eight or so tracks have in store; everything from the guitar sound, lyrical theme, drum pattern, and the artists they'll pilfer from. While they've undoubtedly produced some terrific music (especially on the last LP), each concept being mercilessly stretched over an entire album can leave your enthusiasm waning long before the finishing line. This time things are different. Initially however, it's Raves-by-numbers: opener 'Bang!' is the type of fuzzy guitar [...]
Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]

Matter of Time mp3 The Leisure Society The Sleeper ..... ..... buy it Well, now this is getting interesting... Over at the Contrast Podcast , Tim's solicited everyone for their favorite 50 songs of 2009, remember? From all the responses he's compiled the top 155. I'm very impressed with the list! If you didn't submit your faves yet, you've still got a chance to get in the game at this point! Help us out, eh? (I"ve highlighted my top 10 in blue) Here's [...]

Rough and raw? On Song, by Toad? Never! And bloody hell this is rough. I reviewed Ryan Schmale's previous release late last year, but is rather definitely a different beast. There remain almost none of the glowering, atmospheric songs of this record's immediate predecessor, and in their place a near-unrelenting cloud of angrily sneering guitars. There's a whiff of old time rock 'n' roll at times too, although just the barest hint. I was reminded of early (really early, as in: when they weren't just a bit dull) Raveonettes just a little at times, but the association was [...]

Part one of a 5 part post: Music.......it's been my life. From the second I emerged from the womb I have had a love for music. Music is constantly playing around me at all times....when I go to sleep (or when I am alone in my thoughts) it is ALWAYS playing in my head. There is never a second that I am not hearing music in one form or another. From the very first 45RPM single I purchased when I was 5 years old ("Band On The Run" by WINGS [...]

Friday night in Hollywood, the Raveonettes played to a fairly full house at the Henry Fonda Theatre. Support came from local BTW Crocodiles who performed as a quartet, down a drum machine and up a drummer. Andrew Youssef was on hand to deliver this photo spread.
I shared some of my first thoughts on Gothenburg quartet Makthaverskan 's demo material a couple months back. Their early work was admittedly quite rough and I think people probably brushed the group off, but I felt they had something special. I've been keeping an eye on the band since then, eager to see if my hunch was right and their sound would develop into a raw but refined hybrid. Makthaverskan's self-titled debut album is now out on Luxury , and I'm coyly offering up an I told you so . With the [...]

Since 2002, The Raveonettes have been knocking our socks off with their unique blend of 50s motorcycle cool, 60s girl group pop, and smutty guitar fuzz. It's hard to believe that their debut EP, "Whip It On", is already seven years old, but the Raveonettes have never been the kind of band that shoves their successes in our faces. They seem to just quietly go about their business and - a rarity in the music world - keep getting better and better. With last month's release of their fourth full-length album (not to mention a goodly handful of [...]

By Jodi Root My experiences with Friday the 13th are usually pretty tame and unmemorable, the only reminders of this cliché superstitious date is an abundance of lame facebook statuses or overheard generic chit chat on the el. I'm pretty sure this past Fri 13th, however, has succeeded in trumping all past occurrences to date – both as far as an overall eventful evening and on the creepy factor. I have the much buzzed about San Francisco band Girls to thank for this. Headlining their second consecutive night playing Chicago's Empty Bottle, Friday's [...]

In her persona as Dee Dee, guitar-slinging frontwoman of SoCal garage-rockers Dum Dum Girls , Kristin Gundred has gotten in touch with that little girl who used to sing along to pop classics. "I've always been a fan of more straightforward pop music, and of all the oldies," she says. "I probably know all the songs on oldies radio." The singing served her well as drummer-vocalist of Grand Ole Party , the soul-rock trio that busted out of San Diego in 2007 and released their debut "Humanimals" in 2008. But with the demise of [...]

[Birthday wishes to Butch Walker on Saturday. ... Here's what's on my weekend radar, for one reason or another — for a more comprehensive list, please visit Duke at You Set the Scene :] Tonight: It's Week 2 of Julian Casablancas' flashy residency at the Downtown Palace Theatre, and when I saw the opener last week the Strokes frontman-turned-synth-rocker promised to tweak things every week. One change is that a second opening band has been added, the Growlers joining [...]
One of the artists who supported The Scenestar when we first started and one of our favorite bands, The Raveonettes, are back in town this week for a number of shows! The Raveonettes are playing at the Henry Fonda Music...
