Last night's episode of Gossip Girl relied heavily (more than usual) on its music. It also featured plenty of low-key gems to keep you going until next week's episode. One of the most impressive playlists on the series. Gossip Girl, Season 3, Episode 8: The Grandfather: Part II The Plastiscines - I Could Rob You Quitzow - Cyclone Fred - Damn You Hollywood The Republic Tigers - The Nerve [...]

[photo courtesy of Aaron Bornstein ] Johnny reports: "Being passingly familiar with Clem Snide when I showed up at the Mercury Lounge on this chilly Tuesday night, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Suffice to say, the show turned out to be quite the treat. In addition to the amazing music and cleverly funny lyrics, frontman Eef Barzelay's sense of humor and interplay with the audience made for a wonderful experience. Bolstered by Ben Martin on drums and Brendan Fitzpatrick on bass, the music [...]

Speechless. That's what I was after the local show I caught recently at Kansas City's Davey's Uptown. I wish I could say that the performance was so spectacular that the music left me speechless. Unfortunately, it was a weird chain of events that led to my loss for words. Before I explain the strange events, I must say that the music was in fact, quite good. The more local shows I go to, the more respect I have for Kansas City's local scene (There's a lot more here than the Get Up Kids!) The young [...]

I love rock documentaries. Don't Look Back , Woodstock , The Kids Are Alright , The Devil and Daniel Johnston , DiG! - any excuse to watch great musicians play great music and talk about how messed up they are, I'm there. I think it stems from the fact that, as much as I want to be a rock star, I never will be. Watching rockumentaries reminds me that these people are human too, and generally, their lives are actually worse than mine. If they have to be talented, rich, and good-looking, at least [...]

Mark, Blink-182 Local radio station 96.5 Buzz had a little festival of bands at Cap Fed Park on September 4th over labor day weekend. Headliners Blink-182 with other bands, Weezer, Taking Back Sunday, Chester French, The Von Bondies, Republic Tigers, Stellastar, Matt and Kim and a couple more that I missed due to traffic on the exit to the venue from an accident. Overall a pretty good little festival, I liked the smaller bands better than Blink and Weezer. Matt and Kim were especially good, I love the way Kim plays drums, always smiling and cheerful. [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Well, I've once again been shamed into admitting that I clearly don't listen to enough music from Arizona bands. How did I miss these guys? They've received writeups in Spin and Rolling Stone named them one of the 25 Best Bands on Myspace. What the..? Am I really this oblivious to what's happening right next to me? Personal embarrassment aside, Miniature Tigers are a band you should look into. I caught wind of them thanks to Casey over at Crumblr , but the original post came from a great blog called Cover Me Songs [...]

I'm still awed when I hear the hit version of "Buildings & Mountains" by Kansas City's the Republic Tigers . The song's shimmering production is absolutely brilliant. Their live shows, however, have been a different matter. I've considered them boring and borderline inept. What I caught of Saturday's outing inside the Beaumont, however, was fantastic. While they're still not exactly dynamic, a perfect sound mix and gorgeous lighting complemented a vastly improved approach. (Original image by There Stands the Glass.)
