by Andrew Frisicano DOWNLOAD: Richard Buckner - "Gauzy Dress in the Sun" (MP3) DOWNLOAD: Richard Buckner - "Emily Sparks" (MP3) DOWNLOAD: Richard Buckner - "Born in to Giving It Up" (MP3) Earlier this year, Merge released three of Buckner's out-of-print recordings , "Bloomed," "The Hill," and "Impasse" as digital downloads, and he went out on a tour in April. But before that, he'd been on hiatus, mostly because he was [...]

This week on PHW I'll be running a countdown of my 50 favorite dad-rock albums of the past ten years. I'm not trying to be dramatic or self-important by doing it over 5 days and breaking it into 5 equal segments, it's more a result of the difficulty I always have in formatting posts of this nature. Blogger can be a pain in the ass with large posts featuring multiple images, and I've never figured out how to make these things look just the way I want them. Breaking it down like this makes that somewhat easier for me. [...]

Photo Credit This is going to be an action packed week in Atlanta. The A3C Hip hop Festival is going on in various venues in and around East Atlanta this weekend, and you can find all the details on that here . I'm not familiar enough with most of the lineup to make educated recommendations as to which shows to hit, but if I were sticking around town this week, I would definitely hit it up. But, I'll be going OTP to attend Alchemy , Georgia's mini version of Burning Man. In addition to [...]
The Washington Post reviews Nick Hornby's new novel, Juliet, Naked . As usual, Hornby's dialogue between exasperated women and clueless men hits all the right comic notes. The likable slackers who mope through his stories appeal to that stuck and frustrated adolescent in us all. While wicked novelists like Jonathan Franzen or Claire Messud expose our pettiest thoughts and snicker at them, Hornby's gentle satire of arrested development offers a comforting, shame-free sense of recognition. You may want to knock some sense into his Peter Pans, but you [...]
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution profiles singer-songwriter Richard Buckner. The Georgia Strait profiles hot Vancouver bands. The Poughkeepsie Journal profiles singer-songwriter Anders Parker . Austinist interviews singer-songwriter John Vanderslice . Amazon is streaming the new Hope Sandoval album, Through the [...]

A few months back I was drinking with a friend and fellow music geek, when conversation turned to musical "guilty pleasures." Thanks to one isolated incident that made me the laughingstock of the MOKB mothership, that topic makes me a little gun-shy, so I deflected the question over the course of several rounds until, finally, I admitted that I was a huge fan of the Pet Shop Boys . Surprisingly, my friend did not react poorly, adding that, he too enjoyed their music. In fact, he was so understanding [...]

Born in New York, raised in Nashville, singer-songwriter David Mead writes songs that would be right at home on the soundtrack of a film by Mike Nichols or Woody Allen. With arrangements that feel as much 1965 and as they do 2009, Mead's modern-day standards have some recent national exposure. His song Last Train Home was recently featured both on TV's Private Practice and on NPR. His lyrical style may draw comparisons to current contemporaries like Aimee Mann or Richard Buckner, but on his latest album, Almost [...]
David Mead's lyrical style may draw comparisons to current contemporaries like Aimee Mann or Richard Buckner, but on his latest album, "Almost and Always", Mead is channeling an ever-changing lineup of influences from past generations. Elements of George Harrison, Nick Drake, Burt Baccarach and early Elvis Costello all seem to be present. The album is achingly beautiful â€" quietly synthesizing his various influences into his own unique voice.

Richard Buckner is touring this fall to support three out-of-print albums reissued digitally by Merge in March. The alt-country songwriter's career having evolved so much over the past 15 years, these should be dynamic performances showcasing the salvaged material. Buckner regales us with the origins of the albums, Bloomed , The Hill and Impasse on the Merge blog . Bloomed was recorded in a "wooden shingles Sharpied with bible passages" in Texas before he could even get on the SXSW bill in 1994. The Hill [...]

when i was a little kid i remember constantly asking my mother how old i would be in the year 2000. this was before i could count or add and stuff, or maybe i just did it cause i was lazy. regardless, the answer always came up as 26, but she always liked to add that i may not live to see said age or date - alluding to the fact that she may kill me beforehand. apparently, i was a pain in the ass in my younger days. when 2000 hit i was indeed 26, and [...]

Given my non-linear view of world events, I would like to believe that the theory of punctuated equilibrium first occurred to Niles Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould while out for a leisurely drive in Gould's beloved Corvair, listening to a Joe Henry mixtape lifted from Ernst Mayr's office. Might sound a little farfateched, but how else are we to connect the dots from the crooner of Shuffletown to the troubador of Kindness Of The World to the surrealist sage of Tiny Voices ? It's difficult to believe that, after [...]
