A jerky stroll along downtown New York's dark and decrepit memory lane, it might have been. A show of stormy brilliance from a largely unsung legend still brimming with ability and art-punk attitude? Absolutely. Try as it might, Richard Lloyd's show with Hey Battlefield last Thursday at the Studio at Webster Hall wasn't the-larger-than-life punk tribute it hoped [...]
On Thursday Gabe and I went to The Studio to see Richard Lloyd. Here's what Gabe had to say about the show.------------------------- -----------------I was at home cramping a frightening amount of recording gear into my shoebox-size room when I got a text from Matt."Richard Lloyd 2nite?""Recording a new song tonite. This is two demo recording sessions from Television in 1974 & 1975. The bands highly acclaimed debut album 'Marquee Moon' was released in 1977 (Elektra Records) and was very successful in Europe however failed to enter the Billboard 200 in the USA. Both sessions were included on the bootleg 'Double Exposure' which surfaced in Italy (No Label No. DE-92-SC), and was first released in 1992. The original bootleg included three live tracks from CBGB's in 1975, that are missing from this version. The Television 1974 demos were recorded at Good Vibrations Studios in NYC [...]

"When I saw Tom Verlaine play for the first time, I realized he had 'it,' and all my life I've looked to try and teach people 'it' and usually come away with great despair," Lloyd said. "You can teach harmony, but you can't teach melody. You can show someone the craftsmanship of songwriting, but they're the ones who have to put out the antenna and wait for the universe to send them a song. "The actual creative process is not one over which human being have control. I always thought that; otherwise I wouldn't have picked Tom. [...]

As I've mentioned quite a few times in the past, I grew up not in DC but at the Jersey Shore, NJ. In a town called Neptune to be exact—in a tiny enclave of this tiny enclave called Shark River Hills. Just like our guest blogger all week, Nicole Atkins. And while we're huge fans of her here at TVD HQ, it's not because she's our hometown girl, but because she's making music that's head and shoulders above SO, so many these days. Find out yourself when she plays The [...]

Chris Colls has had the opportunity to photography some big Aussie names including Miranda Kerr, Eric Bana and Rachel Griffiths. Turns out he's also a pretty cool guy to chat to - just as down to earth as he claims some celebs are (unfortunately he wouldn't dish the dirt on which diva's have thrown tantrums on set). Pedestrian caught up with with Chris to talk about his inspiration, his work and how he gets intimate with the big celebrities. Chris Colls will be speaking at Semi-Permanent in Melbourne on the 9th of October. P: You started [...]
I wasn't sure Jimi Hendrix's iconic songs could withstand any more bent-note guitar storms, feedback or art damage; as you probably know, the dude became, oh, a bit of a name for not exactly playing solos that sounded like everyone else. But then I hadn't before heard them through the prism of Richard Lloyd, who has quite the back story with Hendrix & this year released an intriguing album, The Jamie Neverts Story, in tribute to the late Velvert Turner, a Hendrix protege & one of Lloyd's dear friends. (There's good reading to be done on [...]
Here's my first ever "This Week In Chicago" post. I'm still trying to learn all of the main Chicago-area clubs, so my apologies if I've left anything out. Please feel free to drop a comment with any club/show suggestions that I miss. I'm actually not sure if I'm going to make this a permanent feature or not. Unlike DC, Chicago has its own Oh My Rockness site, so any post I do is going to be pretty much duplicative of the excellent work they already do. That said, I kinda like doing [...]
