A whole lot of fun for a gold coin donation. That is definitely the Newtown Festival . Sunday in the inner west on an overcast day was spent enjoying live music, writers talks and good food and markets. Although there was a sizeable crowd on hand it did seem a bit easier to get around this year. We arrived shortly after noon, in time to see Parades on the main stage. I had been wanting to see this band for a while and was incredibly impressed. This young five piece create a wall of sound with their [...]

Grand Theft Parsons On DVD now I picked up Grand Theft Parsons on a whim, paying £1.50 for it second-hand. I'd heard mention of the film before, knew it involved both Gram Parsons and Johnny Knoxville (both of whom which, for better or for worse, I am a fan of), and, I understood, had something of a "cult status" (or so it appeared to me). Prior to watching the film, I decided to look up some info about it (as I [...]
The 23rd Aria Award Nominations were announced today. It has a lot of usual suspects in there, but thankfully there's also some new talent getting the attention they deserve. Empire of the Sun don't necessarily count as new talent since both members have been around for a while, but they've basically re-colonised the globe and I'm especially happy about their nomination since they're likely to stop AC/DC from winning any of the big awards. Also, Ladyhawke curiously made the list - curiously since she's from New Zealand. Not that she doesn't deserve the plaudits, but surely that means [...]

It's not often a band finds its name transferring into the world of architecture. Only the most famous of pop's figures -- Beatle John Lennon , for instance -- usually find their moniker on solid concrete and steel. A round of applause, then, to the good burghers of Brisbane, Australia, who named the city's latest bridge over the Brisbane River the Go-Between Bridge, in honour of indie band the Go-Betweens, who hailed from the Queensland city -- and a band who were more an enduring cult than a roaring international success. The name [...]
I had a dream the other night. Me and the missus went to one of the more salubrious venues to watch The Go-Betweens play a show, starting with an acoustic set, followed by a full electric set. Very good it was too, until I had to take a big metal cage up Bloomfield Road in Bath. Look, it was a dream, you know. The Go-Betweens and a Couch But on waking, I suddenly felt rather sad. Because, of course, we'll [...]

On the beach Agathe (centre) showing Salomé (left) and Chloé how to fly a kite The beach at night A couple of weeks ago, I spent a rather pleasant time on the French coast. I was staying with my friend, Agathe, and her mother, Gisèle, at their holiday home south of Nantes. For the best part of a week, the two ladies took great care of me. Everyday, I had a wonderful [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Guest Blogger , Road Report U.K. rockers Maximo Park are hitting festivals around the world this summer and are keeping a diary for Spinner. In the fifth entry, frontman Paul Smith spends his time in Germany arguing with security, painting during an interview, playing mini golf and getting tossed from a hotel. The Go Betweens // Parte 3: "London no longer exists" (1985-1989) "La luce che brucia con più intensità è sempre quella al centro della fiamma" ( In the core of a flame , Grant McLennan) "Potrai ottenere sempre quello che vuoi se brucerai di un fuoco bastante" ( I just get caught out , Robert Forster) La Storia -si [...]

Reading a biography, it's easy to overlook all the behind the scenes work that goes into prepping the written material. If done well, these works read like a good flowing piece of narrative fiction, but there is far more upfront preparation required in the form of gathering articles, watching video footage, reading reviews, conducting interviews and - in the case of music biographies - becoming intimately familiar with the musical catalog. Hence, while the writing itself plays a huge role in the quality of a biography, the real masters of this craft are those who take preparation to the next [...]
Sunday, July 19, 2009 I think I'll be attending an early screening of Paper Heart this Tuesday, which should be neat. Probably. Actually, I don't know. That movie looks as if it will either be really entertaining or just straight crap. Guess we'll see. Here's what you came for. Read on. - The Rundown - Russell Crowe has said that he's in talks to star in Master And Commander 2. Road-trip comedy Ceder Rapids [...]

Considered one of the greatest Australian songs of all time, this Go-Betweens track is an all time favorite. The songwriting duo of Robert Forster and Grant McLennan had a long and varied run from the late 70's until McLennan's death a few years ago, but 1983's Before Hollywood is my favorite by far. The Go-Betweens. Parte 1: Brisbane, Australia (1977-1980). "[...] quella era la cosa più importante riguardo al suonare con Grant. Anche se all'epoca non sapeva suonare niente io sapevo che era una persona intelligente ed arrogante, e che era anche una persona creativa. Suonavo con lui allo scopo di stare assieme a lui ed allo scopo di avere qualcuno che suonasse il basso. Avevo bisogno di qualcuno in cui potessi credere e a cui piacessero [...]

The second mix of the 2009 summer season. This one was an attempt at mostly gritty, psychedelic sounds, but I made room for the Jean-Paul Sartre Experience who I've been revisiting lately (I guess they're psychedelic), as well as some other things that don't quite fit in the garage . Cover art this week is by Jinners who you may know from Spicy Times or Door Girl Art . There's a hi-res version included if you want to burn a CD and print it out the cover. If you'd like to contribute art to an upcoming [...]
The new 7" from Brooklyn's Boy Genius is finally available, and after giving it some listens, I can definitely recommend it. Two brilliant and catchy pop songs with irresistible choruses, and the usual jangly guitars. I especially like the A-side, "blame love", but it's in fact the b-side "The backyard" that stays in my ears after I have turned the music off. "The backyard" is a cover version of Miracle Legion, and although it's not as immediate as "Blame love" it's a really good song. Jason K.'s vocals are of the ugly/beautiful kind, – [...]
It's largely a video weekend here at the Regular Express, mostly due to me working a whole bunch the last couple of days. Time constraints, my friend. Within this large coastal country, a band that gets very little recognition is the Go-Betweens . All the classic Australian bands get played on the radio constantly, and a lot of talentless contemporary bands are praised as a lot more permanent than the fleeting hot garbage that they are. But never do I hear Go-Betweens songs on [...]

Oh Yep Roc , how I love thee...you remind me of my second home and moon pies, of Carolina Blue and muggy, muggy summers. You always say just the right things...now you're looking out for my pocketbook with your very own Stimulus Plan Sale. You're yummier than those chocolate shakes from Char-Grill , you know that? Let's face it, times are tough. But your friends here at Yep Roc Records don't think your record collection should suffer just because times are lean. We are excited to announce our Yep Roc Stimulus Plan to help [...]

A quickie today: The Go-Betweens were one of those college-rock-y bands you used to see here and there on MTV's "120 Minutes" ten minutes before 2 a.m. The Australian band was led by songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, and released a stream of albums until they broke up in 1989, only to reform in 2000. Unfortunately, McLennan died fairly recently. Back in the 80s, I'd see a video of theirs every so often, but nothing really grabbed me until I saw "Right Here," a cute song with an equally cute (and sometimes disturbing!) video. [...]

Homer released their debut single "Lucky Thirteen" in 1995 on Platform Records. The song was produced by the legendary Hugh Jones (who produced all of the great early Liverpool singles from The Teardrop Explodes, Echo & The Bunnymen, Icicle Works, etc). For this single the band consisted of Tim Keegan (started Departure Lounge, collaborated with Robyn Hitchcock, Kid Loco, Tahiti 80, Blue Aeroplanes, etc) on vocals and guitar, Andrew Claridge (from Garageland) on guitars and vocals, Patrick Hannan (from The Sundays) on drums, and Jake Kyle (also Departure Lounge) on bass. The [...]
