The hills are alive with the sound of music. Which hills, you ask? The steep rolling hills of San Francisco will be hosting the San Francisco Popfest 2009 starting tonight and running until Sunday. What kind of music? Nothing but good, clean indie pop. Busy with last minute preparations, I interrupted Andrew Lison, member of the organizing committee, to ask him about the festival, the genre, and imaginary indie pop supergroups. If you're in the Bay Area sometime during the next few days, make sure to grab a burrito and then head down to one of the venues and enjoy [...]
Wikipedia describes a hangover as "the sum of unpleasant physiological effects following heavy consumption of a drug." That is how my NOLA brothers must feel after Jazz Fest and by the looks of the upcoming events calender (thanks to our brothers at Antigravity ) the jealousy may move from me to you to you to me especially as it gets even hotter and there are more music related events going on up here then down there and honestly isn't much going on in May so this may be a short post. FRIDAY 5/8 [...]

Andy from Secret Dakota Ring gets his say in some great underground artists: Rocketship Park They made the best record of 2007, "Off and Away". I believe Travis (SDR drummer and Serious Business Records head-honcho) started recording them and immediately offered to put out their record. This in my type of pop music: smart, gorgeous, interesting, well-played. Think Dylan, Wilco, Beatles. Apollo Sunshine I first saw these guys on tour with OK Go. They might be the best live band the country. [...]

1. Rocketship Park - Because Two Candles from Off and Away [...]

Somewhere in the timeline of great post-punk art-school angsty bands in the UK like Gang Of Four and Magazine, a group like The Homosexuals remains an unwieldy footnote. For some reason (many of them, maybe) this group of rag-tag gents never fully caught on, which is a shame because within the atmosphere of music the band created, true genius exists. Sure, they were passed over when they were in their prime, surrounded by like-minded miscreants (Clash, The Damned, Wire, etc.) who were just as brainy as they were dangerous, but that doesn't have to stay true. [...]

<BR The first day of CMJ '08 marked my first-ever CMJ experience, and as with all firsts in life it came with a few hard-learned lessons. 1. I have little to no sense of direction and need to invest in some sort of personal GPS system to keep myself from walking off the Williamsburg Bridge thinking it's just a fancy nightclub entrance. 2. Only people from Tennessee wear flip flops to rock shows. And 3. Don't drink beer on an empty stomach and then dance to The London Souls, because the [...]

Stories in High Fidelity: A Pre-CMJ Night of Music & Stories Highline Ballroom October 20 On Monday night, the Highline Ballroom hosted a benefit for the launch of the Stories in High Fidelity website—the self-described Huffington Post of the music industry. Cramming four decades worth of influence and relevance into nearly one-and-a half hours of rock oratory, authors Chuck Klosterman (pop-culture essay messiah), Rob Sheffield (post-Nirvana audiophile), Robert Christgau (Dean of rock criticism), Dan Kennedy (gonzo-rock enthusiast), and Mark Spitz (Green Day, Bowie biographer) took turns riffing on pop music history. [...]
Before we get into this year's festival, let's take a look back at the bands amNewYork got to know last year . • Tom Schraeder and His Ego : I haven't heard anything from these guys all year, but a quick perusal of their MySpace page shows they've been actively touring, they were at SXSW this year and will be back at CMJ this year. • Unique Chique : Just released a new album independently. Seem big on their hometown Chicago scene. • iLIKETRAINS : [...]
Too easy, maybe? Jason (of Productshop fame) has put together a pretty stellar lineup for the big Stories In High Fidelity party tonight at Highline Ballroom . Chuck Klosterman, Rob Sheffield, Dan Kennedy, Marc Spitz and more, plus live performances from Jaymay and Rocketship Park! Wowzers. You know how I love stories about music ... I'll be there.
While the nostalgic part of me is sad that Product Shop NYC, one of my favorite and best NYC music blogs, is no more, I am really excited that Jason has launched an awesome NEW site, Stories In High Fidelity , which may in fact be even MORE awesome. Check out tonight's AMAZING lineup and I will see you there! STORIES IN HIGH FIDELITY PRESENTS An evening of stories & music with >> Jaymay (Autumn Fallin') >> Chuck Klosterman (Downtown Owl, Fargo Rock City) >> Robert Christgau ("The Dean of Music Journalism") >> [...]
