The NBA Season is still young and TSS is keeping the ball in play. We hit you off with the West , now it's time to bicker about the Eastern Conference Standings. The East is has a top heavy talent pool but it's full of compelling storylines that'll keep you tuned in. The Celtics are back, healthy and ready for another run at the chip. Meanwhile LBJ is still climbing for the mountain top while Orlando knows what it takes to get there. But screw all that serious stuff. Gilbert Arenas is back ladies and gentlemen. Who knows what [...]

Seen this all over the gaff, but it's an essential post. IQ ran up in the BBC and spun a UK hip hop mix that shows how the music has evolved from Homo erectus (no homo) to Homo sapien (no homo). Ceebanger kindly chopped a rip out and give it ya. Playlist: Malcolm McLaren - 'Buffalo Gals (Instrumental)' HiJack - 'Hold No Hostage' Silver Bullet - '20 Seconds To Comply' SL Troopers - 'Movement' Demon Boyz - 'Vibez' London Posse - 'Money Mad' DJ Pogo, Monie Love, Mc Mello'O' - 'Juss [...]

DJ IQ was invited onto the BBC to do a UK Hip Hop mix to document the evolution of our scene. After asking for requests on Twitter IQ came up with around three quarters of an hour's worth of top notch UK Hip Hop. It was on the radio. Now we've got a rip of it for you to download so you can listen to it any time you want. The tracklist is as such: Malcolm McLaren - 'Buffalo Gals (Instrumental)' HiJack - 'Hold No Hostage' Silver Bullet - '20 Seconds To Comply' SL Troopers - [...]

From 1978, produced by her soon-to-be future hubby Nick Lowe , and featuring stellar back-up by Graham Parker 's ace band The Rumour , please enjoy Carlene Carter -- daughter of June Carter and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash -- and her debut single "Never Together But Close Some Time." Written by brother-in-law Rodney Crowell , who went on to marry Roseanne Cash . I've loved this song since the 7-inch vinyl days, and [...]

Texas singer/songwriter Rodney Parker and his band the 50 Peso Reward released a pretty good country rock album last year called The Lonesome Dirge that I've heard no one talking about. While Parker's songs are squarely on the pop/rock side of country, there is enough twang and enough empty Whiskey bottles that it really reminds me a little of Son Volt or of the Old 97's before Rhett Miller went all pop-crazy on us all. I also hear shades of the powerful guitar-driven alt-rock at times that also makes me thinks of bands like Buffalo Tom [...]
DJ Step One (no I'd not heard of him before either) has just joined the geeky world of Hip Hop blogging at his nicely titled 'Only Built For Zshare Links' site. He's basically posting up a load of material that no other blogs have ever posted and in doing so is providing a valuable back catalogue of 90s Hip Hop radio shows and the like. The thing most relevant to this blog is his own 'UK Bubblers' mix which is "a selection of some of [his] favourite UK tunes. Mostly they're from 2001 -2005." [...]

In the late 1970s, country rock had pretty much run the course - the Eagles had appropriated the best parts of the genre and their watered down music reigned from the top of the charts. The true innovators like Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman of the Byrds were left to cash in endlessly on their past reputations by playing their old songs as part of ridiculous package tours. That's where these boys found themselves in 1977, fronting their respective bands on a European jaunt. The promoter had visions of people coming out in hopes of seeing [...]
Ah, Friday. If this were 1993, I'd be gearing up for a badass night of TGIF on ABC. But, alas, it's 2008. Luckily, there's plenty of live music to take in all weekend long. Some pretty good. Some no... Continue reading "Good Friday: Rodney Parker, The Happy Bullets, Ivoryline, The Lashouts, Mad Mexicans, Somebody's Darling, THe BAcksliders, Days of the New, Scuba Team Go, Big Chief" >

My first full year of blogging has been a good one by all accounts. I wouldn't be where I am now with this hobby project if it wasn't for the artists and PR peeps who realised that Certified Banger was actually worth something. I've also got to thank the people who have posted my words at other websites - all these people know who they are. Last year, I was in no way organised enough to wrap up the year in this style, this year however I do feel I am in a position to partake in the summing up [...]

So where's all the love for Rodney Parker and 50 Peso Reward? It's Labor Day Weekend, folks, which can only mean one thing: Put them white pants in the close till springtime, right? Well, I've been told to do that with mine, at least. A shame, too. Because, you might not know it, but I look good in those white pants... Anyway, I digress. As always, here are the shows we've already told you about... Tonight, there's the Shibboleth , Stumptone , Slow Burners [...]
