Para comemorar o vigésimo aniversário editaram o livro "Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records, The Little Label That Got Big And Stayed Small", com a história da editora, centenas de fotografias das bandas, capas e posters.

It's wonderful when a record label forms a distinct identity that you learn to trust. It's essentially the antithesis of the major label mentality, where you simply sign every cash cow you can get your hands on. That's not to say smaller labels don't have financial considerations and that they might not play into their artist selection process, but it's far less pronounced than when you're say...Sony BMG. There are only a few labels I actively follow and consider trustworthy - 4AD, Mute, Domino, Star Time (former home to the much-missed Tom Vek) and certainly Merge. I may [...]

Fanfarlo recently announced on their website of an upcoming US tour starting on November 9th in Chicago, and for all of you locals - a November 14th date here in Salt Lake City. This is excellent news, as I have been wanting to see these guys for quite a while now. I missed my opportunity to see them way back at SXSW in March, so I'm anxiously awaiting this! As an added bonus, the band uploaded a laptop session that includes a cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over [...]
The best way to spruce up a delicate, haunting melody featuring an accordion? Well, a homemade video filmed in your guitarist's house, surrounded by candles and vintage furniture, doesn't hurt. North Carolina folk duo the Rosebuds might keep their music sparse, but thankfully, there's plenty of gothic charm to go around in this homespun clip [...]

His and Her Vanities: The Mighty Lunge Madison, WI quartet, His and Her Vanities release their third album, The Mighty Lunge via the Science of Sound record label. Generally Science of Sound's bands are artsy rock bands, but His and Her Vanities break the mold. Their variety of raw, energetic pop is reminiscent of bands like the Pixies or the Apples in Stereo . The giddiness of the band can be explained by the band's core, married couple Ricky and Terrin Riemer. Married bands like Mates of State and [...]
"Chapel Hill's The Love Language began in 2007 as lead singer and songwriter Stuart McLamb found himself living with his parents after a particularly disastrous break-up. He rented a storage space, borrowed some gear and started recording the album on a 4-track. He passed the songs around, and when he received an invitation from The Rosebuds to kick off their Life Like tour, he formed a band with six of his closest friends. The Love Language's self-titled debut was released in March of 2009 by Portland's Bladen County Records to rave reviews. Several heralded performances [...]

Will the news on XXMerge ever end? Apparently not. Yesterday afternoon I got word that The Rosebuds are the latest XXMerge video to be featured on converse.com. Here's the release below. Today on Converse.com , see The Rosebuds play an acoustic version of "Leaves do Fall" from their 2007 album, Night of the Furies during XX Merge. The Rosebuds performance completes the six week series at Converse.com showcasing Merge bands performing stripped-down sets somewhat spontaneously in various locations during the festival. Visit the XX Merge section of Converse.com for videos from [...]
This is an ever changing and (hopefully) expanding list of some of the songs I have mentioned before in this blog or simply stuff I have found somewhere on the web that I find interesting, but have no time to write about. All files have been found somewhere in cyberspace (and NONE of them have uploaded by me, so I cannot help you with any requests you might have - just keep returning and something new might pop up), so they will be available until the artists, record labels, fans, whatever decide to remove them. Thanks to a few readers, [...]

Buddhist monks blessing the crowd in the wee hours of the morn. For the Bon Iver preformance review jump to where is says BON IVER. So I think everyone has a little Goth in them and why not? I mean there is darkness all around in the media in our daily lives in general. Justin Vernon must have a little more than the average Cure fan. Look at his lyrics: "Only love is all maroon Lapping lakes like leery loons Leaving rope [...]

When it was announced that Bon Iver would play a sunrise set at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles I booked a flight pronto. The event ended up being one of the coolest musical experiences I've ever taken part in. We arrived to Hollywood Forever a little after midnight. Armed with sleeping bags, pillows, beers, and various food essentials to help us make it to the 6am set time. When we walked in there was a huge projection screen on the mausoleum that was the only source of light in [...]

This summer, Chapel Hill's own Merge Records celebrated 20 years of being in business. And there's a book detailing the ups and downs of the label. To understand Merge from a fan and musician's point of view, I could think of no one better than crazy Duncan Webster, the lead singer of Durham's Hammer No More The Fingers . Duncan (left, bass), Joe (right, guitar) and Jeff (drums) of Hammer No More The Fingers [...]

Hear Here: The Triangle WKNC and Terpsikhore Records and Flying Tiger Sound Various North Carolina Artists, 2009 Compilations are always a weird beast to review, because well, they are disjointed by their very nature. There is not supposed to be continuity, only fresh revelations. It's hell to listen to, because I have to keep referring to the tracklisting just to see which song is going. But none of that is the fault of Hear Here because [...]
