Once again, WFMU makes camp at Kutsher's resort in the heart of the Borscht Belt, as we hook up with the All Tomorrow's Parties festival and broadcast live! The three-day long event in Monticello NY runs from September 11-13th and if you caught last year's simulcast from the My Bloody Valentine-curated fest you know that having WFMU is the next best thing to being there (though while we carried a myriad of live sets, we may have fallen short in relaying the experience of having one's nails done in the Kutsher's [...]

So it's been about a month since I last submitted a review. I've been out of the country. Ego subdued, I'm sure none of you noticed but that's okay I still love you. Amidst the hardcore DDR arcades , Lineage II internet cafes and strawberry flavoured KicKer bars , Seoul is a city I could really settle down in. Unfortunately no matter what city I'm in, I'm always extremely secular about my music. While I was there not once did I lend an ear to Rain or BoA (for example). Instead, I [...]

myspace It seems no matter how often we preach to the masses, people still forget that Halifax is more than Celtic folk and slacker rock. Sure, both styles are well accounted for here in the city, but a blossoming adventurous folk scene is just one of the many other communities strengthening its hold on the area (not to mention the punk, roots and hip-hop acts making waves). What really grabs me about the songwriter scene is that every act is drawing from different sounds and influences. Of course [...]
This is a great theme. Rufus Wainwright-- Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart Seeing Rufus live must be such a wonderful experience. Regrettably, I have not been fortunate enough to have done so, but if I had, I'd have wanted to see this show. This song is from "Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall", a live album of a tribute concert given in 2006. The titular Judy is Judy Garland. Wikipedia says, "Backed by a 36-piece orchestra under the conduction of Stephen Oremus, Wainwright recreated [...]
So I have not been reading my feeds for the past few weeks. Did not miss nearly as much as I thought I would - which is all kinds of nice - but there were a few things that did slip past. Starting with one of the more recent misses just from earlier this month was i (heart) music's annual Hottest Bands in Canada list! Two Hours Traffic and stretching it a bit Holy Fuck - were the only bands from the east coast to make it on the list this year. [...]
In typical herohillian style, I've put off posting on Nova Scotia Music Week until today, which also happens to be the day the festivities begin. But I'm afraid that how we operate around here, it's all seat of the pants, knife-edge action when you climb the hill my friends, so you have to learn to deal with it. Or something like that. Anyway, NS Music Week is chalk full of events, so if you're anywhere within travelling distance of New Glasgow (wait, there's a "New" Glasgow? Word to Mr. Burns, and also, [...]

For the last few years at around this time, I Heart Music reaches out to the bloggers and actual music journalists and asks them to submit the list of the ten hottest bands in Canada. What does hottest mean? Well, really I have no idea and judging by our traffic and loyal fan base, what we think might not be in line with the other people he asks. But I thought I'd pump out my list for you to read anyway, as I'm guessing that most of my nominees will continue to need a parka rather [...]

So another HPX has come and gone, and once again our fair city held it down. The sets we caught were fantastic and as diverse as some of the venues that housed them. I mean, it's hard to believe you could see Propsector's Union, I See Rowboats and Retribution Gospel Choir in a church, and then jump ship to see the GZA rip at The Marquee on the same night, but such was the embarrassment of riches HPX had to offer. Anyway, here are ten things we learned this year at HPX: [...]
Without a doubt is the killing method known as scaphism : Also known as the boats, is an ancient Persian method of execution designed to inflict torturous death. The name comes from the Greek word skaphe, meaning "scooped (or hollowed) out" and from Latin word meaning "boats". The naked person would be firmly fastened within a back-to-back pair of narrow rowboats (or in some variations a hollowed-out tree trunk), the head, hands, and feet protruding from this improvised container. The condemned was forced to ingest milk and honey to the point of developing [...]

Tie it to whatever ugly contemporary reality you please, but gosh, people sure are getting off on nostalgia lately--and I'm not talking about that insipid brand of run-of-the-mill retro-fetishization that has claimed the first eight years of this decade's still-fetal culture. I'm talking about straight-up jonesing for jigawatts: gauzy-eyed, snows-of-yesteryear-style pining for the past. Pulling a Jack at the end of Season 3: "We have to go baaack !" You don't really expect sentimental surges like this from indie-rockers born in the 70s--you get it from emo-kids born in the 80s. But this [...]

photos by Zach Dilgard , words by Black Bubblegum After a great (and late) Saturday-night , morning (3pm) bloomed with Robin Guthrie (co-founder of Cocteau Twins ) and his shimmering ambient soundscapes in the main room. Backlit by projections of fractals and waves, it was the perfect way to ease into Sunday. Le Volume Courbe and Wounded Knees (both opening for [...]
