Grace Potter and The Nocturnals have popped up a couple other times on the site via our weekly Top 5 Most Played Songs series. I commented previously on how their sound was reminiscent of the great jam bands of the 60's and 70's, and Potter's soulful, bluesy voice is just a joy to listen to. Bonnie Raitt described the band as "one of the most soulful new bands around," and I tend to agree. So, today I was quite pleased to come across this live show from the band that took place last weekend at Florence, MA's Pines Theater. [...]

So last weekend I took my pilgrimage down to Brooklyn to check out some classic soul acts . Coming up next weekend I'm sticking closer to home to check out The Royal Family Get Down , a one day soul fest featuring some more contemporary soul acts including Soulive (who are hosting the whole shin-dig), Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (who weren't on the original bill and for whom I'm extra excited to check out), John Scofield, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (who I've seen many times and [...]

Yall. Looking at the cities that visit HRO the most. Trying to 'get a better sense' of who reads HRO. From what I can tell, people in suburbia do not read HRO. People from 'the city' read HRO. I can conclude that only white people and rich people read HRO, because they live in 'the city' and 'can afford rent/Macbooks.' Can u find urself in this list? Are yall 'surprised' by a city that u 'didn't think was THAT authentic? Still need more demographic info, because I basically 'guessed' this list. [...]

The first big music release date of the year offers a bonanza of indie rock albums. The CD release of Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion has been garnering most of the press, but A.C. Newman's Get Guilty , Antony and the Johnsons' The Crying Light , Andrew Bird's Noble Beast , and Bon Iver's Blood Bank EP have all been greatly anticipated and have mostly lived up to their hype. Other releases I have heard [...]

Scotty Boombox and J. Rhodes of Ocean Ghosts take over the first hour of pat radio this week. They play some of their music, some of the bands that are playing with them at their release show at Skully's this Saturday night, and other favorite tunes. It's a switch from the usual pat radio, and I like it. I spotlight some of the musicians taking part in this Sunday's Hootenany at Lost Weekend Records in the second hour of the show. Stream it at patradio.org . [...]

It's that time of year again, when bands both big and small converge upon New York City for a debaucherous , music-filled five days...that's right we're talking about the 2008 CMJ Music Marathon. Spanning Oct. 21 to Oct. 25, there's just too much to see. We'll do our best...this isn't our full time job. Come on! (in Gob voice.) Stark has enjoyed watching certain acts from all over the nation strive for immediate, Black Kids-like fame. Alas, they're not all that lucky. From Nashville to Chicago to NYC, Stark has highlighted [...]
Will from Brainbow stops in to introduce two songs from the new self-titled Brainbow album. Also, we hear plenty of bands playing tonight, tomorrow, and the next two days in Columbus, Ohio. The second hour of the show is whatever I could put together before heading into work today. Grab it if the playlist looks appealing to you. Stream it at patradio.org . Download it here .
