The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Papercuts, Girls). Un año de conciertos memorables (Radiohead, Kraftwerk, Oasis, Depeche Mode, Tiga, Babasonicos). Espero que el 2010 se aun mejor, pero disfrutemos de lo que queda de este lapso de tiempo. No [...]

Urbantramper- Rise and Ride Toward 8/10 Following up 2007's Tokon & The Colours was always going to be difficult, but Urbantramper has made a record that not only complements it, they've made a record that explores new subjects and translates modernistic musical ideas. After releasing their stunning second album Lake and Eli, two of New Zealand's most underrated song writers, moved to the UK and travelled through Europe, India and Australia. During the journey they wrote the songs for Rise and Ride Toward, their third full-length album. The album has [...]
The Dodos' homecoming show at Bimbo's proved to be an excellent celebration of the band's success circa Time to Die . Controlled chaos and pronounced energy filled Bimbo's elegant walls, through the Dodos' experimental folk and the Ruby Suns' infectious, tribal-infused indie pop. Photos for both bands after the jump. The Ruby Suns: [...]
Signer – Kicks and Kicks Floating, sweetly psychedelic pop from Wellington's Signer, more electronic dreamscape than glow-fi/hypnagogic pop/chill wave or whatever we're calling it (can it not be chill wave?), despite Signer's past association with Ariel Pink and Panda Bear. This is cleaner and fresher and it pushes forward unencumbered by tape hiss, nonchalantly referencing early noughts techno (or maybe not): sounds a bit like Chemical Brothers feat. The Flaming Lips – The Golden Path, only substitute Chemical Brothers with Squarepusher. This is a cool jam and surprisingly restrained, given it was recorded with [...]

Ghostly Rhythms Wellington's Signer, aka Bevan Smith, toured the world with Panda Bear and Ariel Pink in 2005. The latter two acts have since gone on to be crowned kings of modern psychedelic music and amazingly Signer has remained criminally unrecognised – until now. Breaking a five-year drought, Smith released his fourth album Next We Bring You The Fire on September 23 in the US via Carpark Records, and on November 23 A Low Hum and Border are releasing it in New Zealand with two extra [...]

The Dodos ' Meric Long and Logan Kroeber combined their loves of country picking, West African Ewe drumming and heavy metal to create one of the more unique indie rock outfits today. No longer just the pride of San Francisco, their percussive and eclectic sound have made fans in all corners - from the headquarters of the hipster elite to the hallowed pages of the New York Times and all the way to Milwaukee . Our very own Katie Bain caught up with drummer Logan Kroeber before a homecoming gig at Bimbo's [...]
The group, working with minimal parts that operated at extremely high levels of proficiencies, again reminded me why I like them so much and left an energetic Turf Club crowd in awe of their marvelous abilities.

The Dodos brought their much-vaunted live act to the Turf Club Tuesday, and their electrifying performance didn't disappoint
Our good friends at Yours Tru.ly are some of the most creative and talented people we are lucky enough to know. We were entralled with their recent videos featuring The Very Best and Gary, Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs , but these two videos, released today, featuring Papercuts , are just tremendous. " The two pieces you see here are a collaboration between Yours Truly's Eugene Cheung and Papercuts' Jason Quever, who recorded and mixed the [...]

Headlights ' 3rd release, Wildlife, came out on October 6th and is getting well-merited attention. They play Berbati's Pan on November 10th, put that date in your calender now as this isn't just the pleasant, poppy indie kind of thing it seems on first hearing. You could almost pass over the mix of sweeping synth numbers a la Stereolab, some sparser arrangements a little like, say, The Ruby Suns... nice, but. Next time around though and it's quickly becoming familiar and likable, and once the writing starts to penetrate it transforms into a seriously good piece of work. [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Halfway through the Dodos ' 11-song set at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago Monday night, the band played their new song 'Troll Nacht' without any lights on. At first it seemed that maybe the set was over, but only a handful of songs had been performed. Lead singer Meric Long appeared onstage, gripping his guitar festooned with either colored lights or glow sticks attached to it, which eerily bobbed up and down as he moved. For the duration of the song, this was the [...]

One of my biggest gripes as a fan of live music is the fact that most stages are set up in a fairly predictable manner: guitarist and lead singer in front, keyboard and bass off to either side, and drum player in the back, in the shadows, hidden by the drum set. It's often tough to even see the percussionist, nestled so far toward the back wall, and it's basically impossible to snap a good photo of him. On Thursday, though, two bands gave the keys to the drummers for a night and let them drive. How refreshing. [...]

[The Gossip - Monday] [Dodos - Thursday] [Ruby Suns - Thursday] [Sunset Rubdown - Friday] [Moby - Saturday] I'm really bummed about not being in town this week to catch Kiwi band the Ruby Suns opening slot for the Dodos. Double bummer actually, since tomorrow I fly to Chicago for a non-MS related engagement, which means I'll miss them twice this week ! [...]
