You have to give credit to Yeasayer for being brave. After releasing one of the more adventurous albums of 2007 with their world music-influenced debut, All Hour Cymbals , the Brooklyn band returns with a romantic and nearly electro-pop experience for their sophomore release, and you can already feel a backlash coming. They had previously positioned themselves between Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors in their sensibilities, but with Odd Blood , they sound closer to Depeche Mode (that is, if [...]

New Year's Eve has always been steeped in tradition -- whether you're singing "Auld Lang Syne" or eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight, there's a familiarity to the proceedings. But sometimes you need to break from tradition, and for the past few years, it's become apparent that Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve has worn out its welcome. Some have pointed to Clark's unfortunate stroke back in 2004 and his resulting slurred speech as one reason for the event's failing, but I'd argue that it's really that the Rockin' New Year's Eve has gotten [...]

It's award season! Can you feel it in the air? The Golden Globe nominations are already creating Oscar predictions, Ryan Seacrest is polishing his lifts and red carpets are being shampooed into a glory befitting of Angelina Jolies pumps. The Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominees were announced today and basically the SAG awards are actors patting each other on the back. Regardless, it's a chance to flaunt fashionable creations and I hate to equate it to the prom, but that is pretty much what it is. I am pulling for Meryl Streep for her performance in "Julie [...]

Few bands have the cache or street cred that The Pixies do. It's really hard to actually put a finger on because the run of the mill rock fan might be able to name three or four Pixies tunes max. I wrote about these guys maybe six months ago so I'm not going to wax poetic all over again today. Ryan, better known as The Giant Panther, and I took in The Pixies show this past Friday night at The Wang Center For The Performing Arts here in Boston. The actual building has a long history of hosting cultural events. In 1925 The [...]

After spending several hours and TTC rides with my iPod revisiting literally hundreds of albums spawned from the decade that began at the turn of the century, I managed to whittle down a pretty extensive list to a mere 50 choices. These are not the best albums of the decade, these are simply the ones that have spent the most time in my headphones. And I rambled enough about that here , so let's just get on with the list: 50. Gold - Ryan Adams (2001) [...]

I could tell you about all the great performances you shouldn't miss on the late night talk shows this week. Instead, because I care about you, I'm going to tell you about the one you should miss. Creed (pictured above - if you found this blog by way of the Creed picture please let yourself out) will be playing in all their glorious splendor this Tuesday night on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien . Don't blame Conan, I'm sure his hand was forced (most likely at gunpoint or by some other [...]
First, the New Album news: The much anticipated new Gillian Welch album isn't coming anytime soon... but a David Rawlings Machine album is! Heather at Fuel/Friends reported that Dave's album, A Friend of A Friend , is due November 17th and will apparently feature his version of 'To Be Young,' a Ryan Adams co-write. Gillian will appear on 8 of the 9 tracks. The Felice Brothers got directly back to work after Yonder Is The Clock dropped earlier this year. They [...]

The Hazards of Love is the Decemberists' most commercially successful album to date, and they're currently doing the late night talk show rounds to promote the record. On Friday (May 22), Colin Meloy brought his band to Craig Ferguson's studio to perform "The Hazards of Love 2." Ferguson describes them as "folk-rockers" as he introduces the band, which doesn't quite fit for "Hazards of Love 2," which errs toward the kind of organ-led tracks Ryan Adams occasionally performs. Perhaps Meloy will be more inspired when he lays off the Orangina, which is a shared Decemberists passion [...]

How good was Pearl Jam's Ten? So good that a track which didn't make the album - Brother - just scored the #1 spot on Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. Brother is among six unreleased tracks on the Ten reissue due in stores on Tuesday. VH1 Classic airs Pearl Jam's Ten Revisited on Saturday at 2:30PM. The special features the World Premiere of the "Uncensored" Jeremy video as well as other original videos, archival interviews and more. Friday , [...]

Not even a week after Jimmy Eat World's Clarity x 10 tour ended and YouTube is lighting up with videos, which is great for people who couldn't get a ticket to the sold-out shows or had to go to a wedding (read: me). The band sent a link via Twitter to this video of Clarity closer Goodbye Sky Harbor from Club Nokia in Los Angeles. I was curious how the band would pull off the 16:11 track live, and this gave me my answer. The song is condensed to about [...]

As previously mentioned , I was able to chat with singer/guitarist Ryan Ferguson of No Knife , which is supporting three dates (Los Angeles, San Diego and Tempe) on Jimmy Eat World's Clarity x 10 tour. A story I wrote on No Knife advancing Saturday's show can be found here . But there was plenty from my interview with Ferguson that was left out. So I figured I'd present it here, save for our geek talk about spring training and fantasy baseball. (Ferguson plays in an adult baseball league with former [...]
Once again , I've got No Knife on the brain after I interviewed singer/guitarist Ryan Ferguson on Friday for a story I wrote previewing the band's quasi reunion for its opening slot on Jimmy Eat World's "Clarity x 103 tour this Saturday in Tempe. I'll post the interview once the story is published and after I transcribe everything – we talked for about 40 minutes on music, baseball (poor guy, Ferguson's a big Padres fan), fantasy sports and more, so obviously not everything made the cut for the story. Needless to say, it was [...]

I'm not even going to try and come up with nifty prose this time because I know half of you are glued to your screens watching NBA All-Star weekend. I know I am. So anyhow, what happened this week? What you need to know: - If Rappers Were Characters in the Wire - Crew Love aka what the TSS Crew is listening to. - Stickers. EZ-Splitz. Coming Soon. What else happened? Well... [...]

VH1 Classic will air Oliver Stone's 1991 flick The Doors on Tuesday at 7PM. The movie is more about Jim Morrison, portrayed wonderfully by Val Kilmer, and his nutjob antics than the band and their music which makes it an easy target for criticism. Meg Ryan, before she turned herself into a duck with plastic surgery, does a good job portraying Morrison muse Pamela Courson. The music, some of which Kilmer sang himself, is rocking and there is one helluva great fight scene that results in one messy Thanksgiving dinner. [...]
