Shoot The Player is run by a Sydney duo who shoot videos of (mostly) local Aussie acts performing in various areas around the city. Artists include Dead Letter Chorus, An Horse, Sarah Blasko, Kaki King, Port O'Brien, Vivian Girls, Andrew Bird, Amanda Palmer and more. It's a fantastic site, and the films they make are high quality snapshots of artists performing in a casual setting, giving them a really personal feel. The above Shoot The Player video is Ben Lee performing his version of MGMT's 'Kids' in Rushcutter's Bay Park, Sydney. Don't expect to hear anything [...]

i went to st jerome's last year and it is the best festival i've been to.fact. the collection of local and international talent for next years event promises to bring just as much enjoyment. huddled into brisbane's alexandria st it offers the most unique experience of all australia's music festivals. here's a preview of some of the laneway artists mumford and sons (phenomenal folk band from uk, have a repuation as a great live band) 'little lion man ' [...]
How do you top Grace Jones in the park? Enter The Reverend, that's how. Man I can't wait for the collective group hug of a whole city when Green throws this one down... • Al Green (USA) • Big Bad Voodoo Daddy • Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears • Breakestra • Camera Obscura • Dan Sultan • DJ Mark Murphy & Steve Malinder (Cabaret Voltaire) • DJ Russ Dewbury • DJ Sampology • Future Classic DJs • J-Rocc (Beat Junkies) [...]

The St Jeromes Laneway Festival has always held a special place in YATM's heart... especially the Melbourne event.. The central business district of Melbourne Australia is a treasure trove of little laneways covered in street art, hole in the wall bars, cafes and one of our favourite places to photograph. Many a time whilst wandering we have come across random gigs, one that stands out was a rocking set we happened across in AC/DC lane during the busy lunch hour of the business day, it was all going on... We here at YATM just love music played [...]

Though it sounds like they reward domestic violence or heroin addiction, Sydney's SMAC Awards (an acronym for Sydney Music, Arts and Culture ) celebrate the content creators, visionaries and culture merchants that invigorate The Harbour City. No wife beaters here, unless you count the Bonds variety sported at "Best Music Event" nominee Parklife . No addicts either, unless you count the crochet junkies from "Remix The City" nominee I Heart Kings Cross 09 . You get the point. But our favourite part of the awards, aside from acknowledging Sydney's unsung innovators, is [...]

The first announcement for the 2010 Laneway Festival is up and I have to say that I'm all kinds of excited. I'd definitely be front and centre for Mumford & Sons and would also like to check out Echo & The Bunnymen, Florence & The Machine, Wild Beasts and The XX (the latter just to see what all the fuss is about - I haven't been convinced by all the hype I have to say). Tickets go on sale on October 30th and I'm going to be doing my darndest to score one for myself. Lineup: [...]

After much conjecture, mostly wrong, the lineup for the 2010 St Jerome's Laneway Festival was announced today. I have to say I was rather underwhelmed. I mean, it has a certain amount of interest with some very much written about bands on the bill. It certainly has a fresh feeling about it. But, but, well it's just. There are no bands that scream 'I have to see them'. No Broken Social Scene. No Okkervil River. But I think I will buy a ticket. I am certainly curious about The xx (like their album), Black Lips and Mumford & [...]

The first round of acts for 2010's Laneway Festival was announced this morning and boy is it killer. In true Laneway tradition the lineup combines Post-Punk legends (Echo & The Bunnymen) with UK up and comers (The XX, Wild Beasts), local heroes (Dappled Cities, Eddy Current Suppression Ring) and a dash of sweaty party starters (Radioclit, N.A.S.A.). Check out the lineup below... ST JEROME'S LANEWAY FESTIVAL 2010 Echo & The Bunnymen (UK) Florence and The Machine (UK) Black Lips (US) The XX (UK) Daniel Johnston (UK) [...]

First things first. We had pretty high hopes that Wavves was going to be included in this announcement. There was also some talk of Japandroids and Dinosaur Jnr, which just turned out to be horseshit. I suppose there is always 'round two'. The exciting news (obvs) is the headline act - ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN!! Their inclusion should not only make the crowd a little bit more 'mature', but also ensure those dickheads who are still spaffing abut the awesomeness of the Big Day Out line-up are nowhere to be seen. Anyway, [...]

They're back! Just announced today is the return of The Brunettes to New Zealand for a tour with Australian alternative pop singer Sarah Blasko in celebration of the release of their new album Paper Dolls . Blasko is a surprising but perfect choice, her sweet, honeyed voice and unique songs are very impressive. This will be Blasko's first visit to New Zealand, and she'll play all four dates with The Brunettes in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Leigh (tickets are available from Under The Radar and the venues). [...]

The perfect walking-through-a-crowd-of-peo ple-when-you're-feeling-blue-s ong. "I don't even know myself." Sarah Blasko - All I Want [ MF ]

There is a first for everything. Last night was the first time a show felt under whelming. With the Oxford Art Factory not even half full by the time El Perro Del Mar came on stage, I can only imagine it would've only felt confronting to the Swede who is visiting for the first time to support Sarah Blasko . El Perro Del Mar's songs aren't even that confronting. If anything they are simple, light-hearted and joyous. They are short pop pieces for everyone to enjoy. It's really [...]

Empire Of The Sun, Ladyhawke, The Temper Trap, The Drones and Hilltop Hoods were among the hopefuls announced in 2009's ARIA Award nominations. Emperor Steele and Captain Littlemore led the charge with a "Album Of The Year" nomination joining AC/DC, Eskimo Joe, Sarah Blasko and The Temper Trap in the highly coveted category. The duo's "Walking On A Dream" also nabbed a "Single Of The Year" nomination aka the "Sports Tonight Montage Song Of The Year Award" with Hilltop Hoods, Kate Miller-Heidke, Ladyhawke and Temper Trap also in the running. Other nominations of interest [...]
Editor of the blog for Perth music conference One Movement , Andrew McMillen, asked me to do a guest post over on that site. It's basically five picks from the many artists showcasing there and I figured I'd post it up here as well. Whothehell.net regulars won't find too many surprises here since these are acts we've given love to in the past, some of them have even gotten quite big since then, but in case you've been living under a rock and heading to the conference these are five acts you should push your way to [...]

Sweden is known for its innovative indie, and readers of Puddlegum know that we have a soft spot for music coming out of Scandinavia. El Perro Del Mar is one of the artists we enjoy in particular, and we're excited that they have a new album, Love Is Not Pop , coming out on October 20th. C hange of Heart is the first single from their third album, Love Is Not Pop , showing off El Perro Del [...]
