Junior League fans out there have another band to follow now that Elias Cohn, former JL bassist, has joined forces with Stripmall Ballads , the latest "musical manifestation" of Phillips Saylor. "I joined Stripmall Ballads because I believe in the artistic vision of the band," said Cohn when asked about his departure. "I think the music and the attitude of the project is more in line with what I want to express as a musician." Stripmall Ballads has performed with the likes of Sarah Harmer, The Be Good Tanya's, and Jolie Holland and recently played [...]

And now, the Top Ten. A few of these were probably pretty obvious to anyone that reads herohill or likes Canadian music, but hopefully some of the lesser known acts (The Wheat Pool or Julie Fader for example) are new treats for you to digest with your cranberry sauce and dindon. Posting might be a bit sporadic over the next few days, but after some of these gems we gave you, hopefully you'll remember your pals at herohill in the new year. 10 [...]

Just something that I'm listening to. Just something in the form of Julie Fader's "Outside In" album that was released from Hand Drawn Dracula this past September. It is a great album that I find comparisons of Julie's vocals to a echoing Sarah Harmer's "girl next door" vibe with still having a Sarah McLaughlin aura & mystique. So basically you know it will be both beautiful and something you can find yourself listening to anywhere and anytime. In true Canadian music industry style, Julie had a bit of assistance with some appearances (vocally) from from Chad [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Northern Exposure , Canada Canucks do collectives best. Now Arcade Fire , Broken Social Scene and New Pornographers are joined by Toronto electro-popsters Everything All the Time . The band's six members have deep roots in the indie scene, playing with the likes of Feist , Sarah Harmer , Jason Collett and Esthero , among other notable acts. Fronted by vivacious vocalist Alanna Stuart -- [...]
Hello friends. It has been a while, eh? Did you think I forgot about you? Honestly, I sort of did. I had posts more or less prepared and then...nothing. What does it take to bring me out of hibernation after 2 months? The rawk of the Constantines , that's what. The band is celebrating its 10th anniversary by going on a 10 date tour of Ontario with some of their friends. They kick it all off in Ottawa on Tuesday and then, on Wednesday, they are going to blow the doors off the Grad Club in Kingston. [...]

December 4th, the Toronto band Everything All The Time made their Ottawa debut with a splash. (Mostly because the pipes from the ceiling was leaking uncontrollably) Also there were bands that opened up for them who were: The City Above Geoffrey The Giant Everything All The Time was the band I was most excited to see. Mostly because there have been [...]

Supergroup . Perhaps you've noticed, but that word is getting thrown around on a pretty regular basis these days on the musical interwebs. Perhaps a little too much. But one can understand why, as pretty much everyone who is attempting to play music for a living these days, indie and otherwise, plays in multiple bands. You can't blame them - playing shows is the lifeblood of a musician these days, and so, the more bands you're a part of, the more shows you can play. Smart business really, to say nothing of other factors like [...]

As we progress down our path of the loveliest music of the decade, we'll give you a bit more detail on the records we've chosen. While we were infatuated with numbers 31-40 (which you can read here), we're ready to go to battle over every selection from 1 to 30. Not a bad song on any of these albums, if you ask us. You can listen to the entire album of each of these by registering with Lala.com.... but you knew that, right? While we don't claim this to be a defining document of merit, we [...]
looking at the list of artists, and committed artists, this is very tempting and ten bucks for a year is pretty much a steal. to top it all off, gord downie and the sadies are the featured artist of the month offering up a cover of randy newman's "louisiana, 1927." here's the info, taken straight from the press release, on the swim drink fish music club and a few tracks from club below that. the swim drink fish music club is an online music and audio experience @ swim drink fish music developed by lake [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone It's unseasonably warm here in Champaign-Urbana. The weather gets like this here in November: schizophrenic, with wild mercury jerks back and forth from freezing to oh-my-gosh-I-can't-believe-i t's-not September balminess. Such warmth can make a chap reflective on the year in sound , and I'm not alone. Standing in line to see Neko Case Friday night at the Canopy Club , I heard folks both in front of and behind me talking about their year in rock. Most were reminiscing about the last time they saw [...]
Neko Case's show last night at the Pageant wasn't that different from her September 2008 appearance at the same venue. However, the comfortably crowded show was, shall we say, loose. Not musically... (photo: Laurie Kang) I've been kind of obsessed with some "big sounding" music lately, thanks in no small part to my continued infatuation with the TV show Glee . I thought that-based on descriptors alone-Toronto's Everything All The Time would kind of sound like a school choir (quartet of vocal harmonies, cramming everything but the kitchen sink in, blah blah blah) but truthfully, this tight 6 piece pop-outfit is anything but blah blah blah. The band has individually busted their chops supporting everyone from Feist and Sarah [...]
I don't usually post tour dates on the blog, but I figured a lot of you might be interested in what cool shows have been announced in your area for the near future. I know I usually rummage the internet for such information. Here is this the touring news for the week ending 10/23, including dates for JUSTICE, Arctic Monkeys, Wilco, Julian Casablancas, Weezer, The Antlers, Neko Case, Andrew Bird, Free Energy, The Drums and These United States . JUSTICE DJ SETS 10-29 New York, [...]
Someday someone can explain to us why Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah Slean doesn't have a U.S. label deal. Cabaret torch songs mix with theatrical, confessional adult pop for an accomplished sound that is both personal and sumptuously produced. We defy you to watch "Get Home", her heartwrenching video of a woman telling her lover to go back to his wife, without being at least a little moved by it all. We're going to follow up soon on her latest project Black Flowers , a collection of nine songs from Canadian writers (Leonard Cohen, Ron Sexsmith, [...]
Sur Masters Of The Burial, son 2ème album, Amy Millan reprend Sarah Harmer, Jenny Whiteley, Richard Hawley et Death Cab For Cutie.
