Filed under: Exclusive , Spinner Interview Saul Williams is an artist of many talents. He began his career in poetry and rose to international acclaim as the star and co-writer of the film ' Slam ' before making the natural leap to MC. Williams spent most of the 2000s fronting bands that played a genre-busting music that was neither hip-hop nor rap-rock. Further refuting any kind of categorization, Williams worked with famed producer Rick Rubin and later teamed with Nine [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Halfway through his set Friday at the Roxy in Los Angeles, poet and musician Saul Williams stopped. "Hey man, this is what I'm singing about," he said, trying to make peace after singling out a scuffle in the mosh-pit up front. "Drink some water." Williams is currently headlining the first-ever tour under the Afro-Punk Presents moniker, a movement that began eight years ago with "an initiative to create a platform for alternative black art," according to co-founder Matthew Morgan. Portland, OR- Sunday November 15th-$15 adv & $18 dos-8pm-w/American Fangs, Early Greyhound, & CX Kidtronik & Tchaka Diallo- and this (scroll down).
Avante Garde musician/poet Saul Williams—who visits Portland Sunday—has worked with a lot of artists: Trent Reznor, DJ Krust, DJ Spooky, Coldcut and recently, the Arditti Quartet. Each of these collaborations has sounded distinct (hell, anything Williams touches sounds unique), and each has been an experiment in genre-crossing. Few artists are more passionate and immediate as Williams, and his career gets more interesting as time goes on. So, for this giveaway, we're asking two questions: Who should Williams work with next, and what should the title of their collaboration be. Got it? Post your answer in the [...]

Born: 1972 in New York. Latest release: NGH WHT—The Dead Emcee Scrolls with the Arditti Quartet, a collaboration with composer Thomas Kessler. Why you care: Quick—name a slam poet other than Saul Williams. Guaranteed, if that were a question on Cash Cab, 10 out of 10 contestants would get kicked to the curb. But it isn't just that Williams is the face—make that the only face—of a niche art form; it's hard to find a performer, in any medium, who possesses the same level of intensity. (Hell, [...]

Everyone knows that Saul Williams is talented. He's an accomplished poet, singer, actor (he was in K-PAX !), and activist. But did you know that the Brooklyn native is also a deadly big game hunter ? Or what about his lifelong friendship with the Ultimate Warrior ? Did you know about his stint as a celebrity chef ? Or, um, what about this photo of him with a guy and his Ferrari ? Basically, Saul Williams can do everything , while all we can do is giveaway tickets. That said, [...]

Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]
Saul Williams Saul Williams with his album, The Inevitable Rise & Liberation of Niggy Tardust , Saul showed that he truly is a genuine and unique 'hip-hop' artist. Featuring a cover of U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday , the album produced by Trent Reznor/ NIN is a clash of industrial clangs and free flowing hip-hop with a dash of Prince . First establishing himself as an influential poet, and then as an award-winning screenwriter/actor, Saul Williams then went on to establish himself [...]

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I actually knew how to play an instrument. Would I try to start a rock band? Would it be more prog, or just garage? This contest is to spread the word for those of you that love converse or you kids that can actually play an instrument, or perhaps interested spreading the word about your band (s). Converse and Journeys have teamed up to hookup some lucky winners with some studio time, some shoes, or both. There's more information below about that, but for my contest, I have a [...]

Words by Chris Catania. Pictures by Colleen Catania The Afro-Punk tour arrived in Chicago with poet/actor/emcee Saul Williams leading the hip hop, punk and funk tribe to the Double Door. Openers American Fangs showed tons of passion and promise, but sadly the surly upstarts failed to strike any chords of freshness or uniqueness. But I feel for them, because having Saul Williams--the personification of pure originality--as your tour mate can make most bands seem average.

Williams was part of an... um... eclectic bill.
New music from M.anifest, feedback on Prince's Paisley Park show & a Fresh Air Tour video update.
Another solid week of shows coming up in Chicago this week. Sadly, though, most of the best shows are bunched up at the start of the week, meaning there aren't too many interesting shows I can take my younger brother to when he's in town this weekend. I'm sure we'll find something to do, though - this ain't DC. (Snap!) As always, my picks in bold . Sunday, 10/25 Beat Kitchen (early - 12pm): Shana Sings (special Halloween show) Beat Kitchen (7pm): [...]

It can't help but feel a bit odd that Saul Williams is part of a hugely sponsored megatour, but at the same time it's pretty awesome he's getting the forum and stage to really put himself out there so many years into a worthwhile and unique career. Check out the full dates below. 10.23 Toronto, ON @ The Opera House 10.25 Minneapolis, MN @ Varsity Theater 10.26 Detroit, MI @ Magic Stick 10.27 Chicago, Illinois @ Double [...]
