The Bloodsugars stellar debut album, I Can't Go On, I'll Go On was released this week on Engine Room Recordings. After their short Midwest tour last week, including a great show in Cincinnati, singer/guitarist Jason Rabinowitz was able to take some some time to answer some questions about the creative process and theme of the new album, some of their new favorite bands and the their new-found love for Bobby McFerrin. Atlas and the Anchor: My favorite song on I Can't Go [...]

The time-honored tradition of the All Things Go Mixtape has returned, albeit in a new form. Instead of its themed predecessors, the new ATG mixtape will be released each month and will stay somewhat within a general motif or mood, but will not be constrained by a specific theme. We kick the new monthly mixtape series off with the November mixtape, which features a cozy combo of memorable bands and warm, fuzzy newcomers. We start off with Little Red, a band I keep thinking I've posted about, but really never got around to it. "It's Alright" [...]

As I have been sifting through stacks of local artists in Bloomington, I was taken aback when I heard E.P. Hall 's new album. Opening with the caw of a crow, Mommy Crow is a compelling twelve track that deserves the attention of listeners who enjoy thoughtful music. E.P. Hall is predominately the work of Elise Percy and Andy Goheen of Sticky and the Bees (Andy books shows at The Bishop). An acoustic album, [...]
Wale 's Attention Deficit has been one of the most anticipated debuts in hip-hop for quite a while. The D.C. native put together five excellent mixtapes (the sublime Seinfeld takeoff Mixtape About Nothing stands out by far), a few hits (including Justice remix "W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E." and the male shoe lover's anthem "Nike Boots") and acted (with fellow District of Columbia musicians UCB) as the house band for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. But, as I'm sure Wale heard millions of times since bursting onto the scene in 2005, all people seemed to care about [...]

The best day of 2002? July 27, when Jasper came to live with me. Another fucked up year. Seriously, it was very hard to live in DC at this time. We'd had 9/11, followed by ridiculous anthrax attacks and then, as a final insult, we had a sniper killing people randomly for several months. Whatever. Rather than linger on the drama, I thought this week I'd just comment on the music that made my 2002 list... I am in the school of thought that finds PSB's Release their worst album, [...]
For all the preparation that goes into a new release from an artist- writing, production, promotion, press- it's audience reception that remains the unknown variable. Fickle listeners have to be factored into any artist's plan for longevity, and the major labels are masters of manipulating this to their advantage- there's a reason Crazy Frog moved more albums than Spoon in 2005. It strikes me then, that the one thing no act can prepare for is parody. People making fun of them. Sometimes reverent (Belushi's Joe Cocker), sometimes scathing (South Park's take on the Jonas Brothers comes to mind), there's a [...]

Mission of Burma The Sound The Speed The Light Matador Exhibiting the rawness and aggression of a band half their age, Mission of Burma's third post-reunion album, The Sound, The Speed, The Light, has more in common with the early-to-mid '80s output of this seminal Boston post-punk band than with either of the two albums which directly preceded it. "1, 2, 3 Partyy!" and "Good Cheer" are as bold, direct and anthemic as any of their classic cuts, including "Academy Fight Song," "This Is Not a Photograph," and "That's How I [...]

The experience of being a DJ Written by Lindsay Luv My background was originally in the music industry having worked in business development at the Orchard and as an agent with top artists like The Raveonettes, as a DJ booker with notable DJs like Eddie Baez, and then in brand event marketing with emerging DJs and artists including Justice, Chromeo, Ladytron, Crystal Castles, Dangerous Muse, Busy P, The Presets and so many others. [...]
Los Campesinos! have been leaking singles from their upcoming sophomore album (chill out bros, the band considers We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed as an EP) for a while now, but now they've finally gotten around to telling us when it will be out. So here it is: It's called Romance Is Boring, and it's due out on Jan. 26 via Arts & Crafts in the U.S., and on Feb. 1 via Wichita in the U.K. Guests on the album include Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, Parenthetical Girls' Zac Pennington and the Dead [...]
Mighty High - Drops a Deuce - Cable TV Eye b/w Hands Up! (live n nasty) There's no doubt about it. Mighty High really is Brooklyn's most "regressive rock act." Draped by some of the most mind-blowing R. Crumb style artwork imaginable (courtesy of Wayne Braino Bjerke) Mighty High really do drop a deuce onto an unsuspecting, slightly horrified public with this amplified, hellified, fuzzified blitzkrieg of raving retro, primal bone marrow rock and roll. Just imagine someone driving a big old rusty screw bit right through the [...]

Billie Carlton A young pretty actress called Billie Carlton had a starring role on stage at the huge Victory Ball held at the Albert Hall on 28th November 1918. Tatler had a few months previously described one of her appearances on a London stage, saying that she had: 'cleverness, temperament and charm. Not enough of the first, and perhaps too much of the latter.' While one newspaper described her appearance at the ball: It seemed that every man there wished to dance with her. Her costume was extraordinary and daring [...]

by C. D. Harvill The 69 Eyes visited the Howlin Wolf in New Orleans on October 12. They are currently on tour with The Becoming and Dommin, promoting their new album, Back in Blood, which was released in September. Some of you may have heard of The 69 Eyes via Kat Von D's promotion of the vampire rock band, maybe you are a fan of Bam Margera who did a beautiful, stylistic job as director of the music videos for "Lost Boys;" "Dead Girls Are Easy," the first single off the new album, and the [...]
The music industry is driven by the desire to make money . A decade ago, the most universal of the American music companies (including Universal itself) were controlled by the likes of Seagram . Today, the honor goes to Vivendi . Perhaps Monsanto will be in control tomorrow. "How does a music company become more profitable?" This is the question that those that have the pocket change ask themselves occasionally. The answer is usually somewhere along the lowest common denominator. What do people already like? [...]

The band that had the most impact at Indietracks 2009, to these eyes and ears at least, was The Specific Heats. Their set in the packed church was delayed when their reverb unit rebelled against the UK voltage and caught fire in protest, filling the stage with smoke. Once the offending unit was removed, the band, in matching capes, played a spectacularly energetic set of 60s garage-influenced indiepop, with guitarist/singer Mat's leaps and keyboardist Marisa (ex-Besties) head shaking a particularly fine sight. The Specific Heats began in Boston as a development of a solo project by Matt [...]
Another great week of cool music! On Thursday there are some awesome choices: there's the legendary Al Green at the House of Blues (hopefully you took advantage of reduced tickets thru Live Nation), great indie rock at the Middle East Downstairs with The DoDos and The Ruby Suns, The Ego and the Oracle (aka Jim of Jim's Big Ego) at the Burren, the reclusive cult figure Daniel Johnston at the Paradise and more, how to choose? Friday brings Art Brut to the Middle East, Reverse to Church and the Spendid Nobodies to Toad; all are great choices. On Saturday you [...]

I started putting this list together back in August, shared it with NF, put it aside for awhile, and finally put the finishing touches on it today...I think. Albums that came out this year are tough to consider because they've haven't quite set in yet. Then again, I'm listening to so much more music now than I did 9 years ago, it's hard to say how much I will come back to albums released this year. Here are my favorites: 50. Ryan Adams - Gold (2001) 49. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes [...]
