Well, well, well, here it is. The first themed podcast and we decided to do the dual (collab, if you will) themes of Murder Ballads and Beer. The murder ballads came from y'all's emails and my admittedly shit memory, while the beer came from Rouge Brewery courtesy our Portland friend Lollyrae . I hope I did okay, but I have to admit I am lacking a little confidence on this one. I think the main problem is that I wasn't too sure how I was gonna do it before I started it, then I realized midway through [...]

Sure, plenty of shows come to town and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about each and every one of them. But, unlike people, all shows are not created equal. Some shows are just more worthy of your unbridled enthusiasm. Scott H. Biram falls into that category. When Scott comes to your town you need to lock up the womenfolk, drink a few whiskey shots and get your ass to the show. I think my card carrying status in Scott's Church of the Ultimate Fanaticism Fan Club is well documented here on ninebullets, so I am gonna quote [...]
Did Chicago leave it all on the field in August with all the great live shows at and around Lollapalooza? August will certainly be tough to beat, but September actually looks like a pretty decent month. Here's what we like…anything to add? The shows with a "!" could be weird. ! The Psychedelic Furs – Vic Theatre – 9/8 Cymbals Eat Guitars – Logan Square Auditorium – 9/8 Tigercity – Schubas – 9/8 Deer Tick – The Bottom Lounge – 9/10 Datarock – Double Door – 9/11 Joe [...]

Yesterday I had the opportunity to play radio ping-pong with KHUM-FM disc jockey, Michael Moore, Jr. KHUM-FM is a freeform radio station based in Humboldt County that's billed as "Radio Without The Rules." If you are not familiar with the concept of radio ping-pong it's pretty simple. One person picks a song - then the other follows it up with a selection of their own. I called into Michael's show at 11 a.m. and we played for two hours. Formerly a music director for KHSU (Humboldt State University Radio), Moore was a worthy and knowledgeable opponent. Please see [...]

Holy. Crap. Talk about getting one in right under the wire. No matter. We're here. tt's still July and the podcast is live, so let's talk about it. This month's podcast is divided into two halves. The first half is all about new music. In that section we have a song from the upcoming Lucero cd, 1372 Overton Park , as well as a phenomenal cover of Lucero's "Better Than This" by ninebullets.net faves, The Fox Hunt . Incidentally, the new Lucero album is currently up for preorder . If you do preorder [...]

This year's block party will be devoted entirely to the 15th Anniversary of Chicago's Bloodshot Records and is titled the Bloodshot Beer-B-Q. The good news is that the event will still take place outside the music club on West Wabansia starting at noon on Sept. 12. Scott H. Biram, Austin's Dirty Old One-Man Band, is back with his blend of country, blues, punk, gospel and soul. Every type of music that I like is thrown in a blender by one crazy Texan and poured into a rocks glass neat. Just like a fine bourbon, Something's Wrong/Lost Forever is meant for sipping, but occasionally it's customary to fire a shot back to know you're alive. The album opens with an authentic message from Biram's stay in the hospital after a run in with an 18 wheeler. That intro leads into the blues/punk gospel [...]
July is a heckuva month to see live music in Chicago. With Festival Season in full swing, there's a great show to see every weekend – and almost every night. Of course, Pitchfork Music Festival is in the middle of the month with an exceptional lineup, but there's plenty more to tickle your fancy the rest of the month. Here are the shows we recommend. See you at the rock show. White Rabbits - Empty Bottle - 7/1 White Rabbits - Percussion Gun Gringo Starr – Schubas – 7/2 [...]

Whew! Talk about getting this one in just under the wire. This month was nutzo with 80 Proof Music , a brief break and all sorts of other stuff. No matter though cause we're coming in on time with some great music to fill your July 4th weekend up with. I decided to shorten up the nine bullets intro music this month. I'm not very happy with how it ended up and I hope to make a better edit of it in the coming weeks or I'll just go back to posting the whole song. [...]

Jason Lytle Plays the Greek Theatre on Friday I really enjoyed the Minor Canon record release party last Tuesday. Such a great band. [Recommended] Oliver Future / Other Lives @ The Echo (Free) - Oliver Future's residency should get a boost from Other Lives. [...]

Written By Ira Brooker There's a reason the summer festival season is the high point of the year for a lot of concertgoers. Like cooking burgers or shooting hoops, watching live music is one of those indoor activities that takes on whole new dimensions when moved outdoors. Every summer sees a ton of ink spilled on the likes of Sasquatch, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, but oftentimes it's the smaller, more niche-y festivals that capture the true charm of the season.
