The breton buckwheat cake recipe featured today on eating/sf is a new favorite of ours. Thanks to the buckwheat, it is dense, rustic and has a slight, but noticeable, hint of alcohol courtesy of the rum. More, it's buttery and aromatic thanks to the cinnamon. The addition of sea salt gives it a nice little tang that makes it quite different from the typical sweet dessert. That is why it is a great dessert for adding toppings (such as maple syrup and/or yogurt or whipped cream). For those reasons, The National's sophomore album, Sad Songs [...]
Ombarrops! is the new album from quirky Polish band The Car Is On Fire. The Warsaw-based group recruited John McEntire (Tortoise, Sea & Cake) to produce the record. The result is a set of songs that sound like the bastard lovechild of Stereolab and The Fall. Check out the title track and more here. It's quite entertaining stuff. As many of you know, I have a little less than 12 months until I must complete the remainder of my Day Zero project. If you are too lazy to click on that link, what I mean is...on January 1st, 2008 I created a list of 101 goals that I gave myself 1,001 days to complete. I've posted a few updates about my progress since then. I'll probably share the next update around January 1st of the upcoming new year. As Nicci pointed out today, my list appears to be way more difficult than some others, [...]

Recommended Show: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2009 PTERODACTYL, CHILD BITE, HERMIT THRUSHES, & FIASCO @ DEATH BY AUDIO 49 South 2nd Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $TBA, 8PM Fiasco don't play many shows in the City since starting college, but the trio do try to make it back from time to time. Plus, teamed up with Hermit Thrushes, Child Bite, and Pterodactyl, it should be an amazing lineup. The cost of the show is still a big question mark, but it's a Showpaper benefit, so it's probably fairly cheap (and totally worthwhile). [...]
Hey there, we're back with a 2nd Announcement for Australia's Big Day Out Festival 2010. As we mentioned in our last post in October , this year's lineup has generated heaps of interest and an unprecedented, record breaking ticket sales for the 2010 tour. Now for the nitty gritty, down and dirty, more bands have been added to the lineup: The band that rewrote the history of Oz rock and made it possible for Aussie bands to once again take on the world, JET are bringing their [...]

Chicago has many or at least several outstanding post rock bands. Tortoise is for math-rock-post-rock types, while Sea & Cake just might appeal to those wanting vocals and some south-of-equator se Publish Post nsibility. The Sea & Cake might be utterly monotonous in concert, but their best moments are a thing of beauty. Oui is chockful of great moments.

Our fair city's music needs your help. As you may know, today's economy is not doing well. This is forcing the city to have to make budget cuts where ever possible, even if that means eliminating some of Chicago's free summer music festivals including Blues Fest, Jazz Fest, the World Music Festival, and Summer Dance. Even Millennium Park concerts such as Music Without Borders and the very cool Downtown Sound series , which only this past summer offered free performances from St. Vincent, Shellac, Dirty Projectors and the Feelies at the [...]

The first time I heard Pelican was a swap out of music with fellow contributor Erik. I have always been a fan of instrumental bands such as Mogwai and Totoise, I have even been known to have a heavy collection of Miles Davis albums. I loved the dynamics of Pelican and abstract noise that came with it. Recently getting a chance to listen to "What We All Come to Need", I instantly new this was their best album to date. You can read my 5/5 review here. When offered the chance to interview bassist Bryan Herweg I jumped [...]
After I peeled off the rainbows and scrubbed the last traces of red lipstick off the morning after Halloween, I set out to find the Borders bookstore in the farthest reaches of Denver suburbia I've yet had the disoriented pleasure of venturing to. Irish songbird Lisa Hannigan was performing a free in-store at one o'clock on Sunday and I was thrilled to get to see her in such an intimate setting. Lisa's voice is absolutely, quietly, and thoroughly devastating . I first heard her, as most of us did, singing the [...]

Kasey prepared this caramel cake for my birthday. It is smooth, sexy, buttery and celebratory. For this reason, Jeff Buckley's posthumously released Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk is perfect pairing for this recipe. Buckley's songwriting and amazing vocals are a perfect comparison for the way this cake tastes: sweet, smokey and caramel. Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk didn't receive the same degree of critical acclaim as Buckley's legendary first album, Grace , but the songs that compose this two disc collection are still stunning, complex and solid. The [...]

Here's a playlist of some albums/songs from 2009 that aren't explicitly Halloween-themed, but would probably be appropriate for an eerie mix for the more indie-minded. There's a few free downloads in there and links to hear the rest. Happy Halloween! Artist: AFI Song: End Transmission Album: Crash Love It's AFI - so you know it's gonna be at least a little creepy. "End Transmission" is my favorite off their new album. Listen on YouTube Artist: Antlers Song: Epilogue Album: [...]

Iron & Wine 's The Shepherd's Dog is a beautiful and warm album; perfect for a relaxing afternoon or quiet evening. The Shepherd's Dog is Iron & Wine's most lush, full-bodied album to date. Whereas his early demos and debut album, The Creek That Drank the Cradle, were sparse featuring little more than Sam Beam's plaintive, intimate lyrics and resonate acoustic guitar; The Shepherd's Dog features a full band and layered, intricate musical compositions that borrow from a diverse array of genres. Importantly, what remains constant is Beam's wistful, [...]

Well look at that, It's already that time of year again: C - M - J ! Version 2009 to be precise. And you know the last thing we want is to send you off into the trenches unprepared and indecisive, which is why we're back again with yet another comprehensive plan of action/preview/treasure trove of MP3s to help nudge you through the week ahead. Just as with prior CMJ and SXSW previews, we listed only one show for each recommended band. Most of the bands listed here are playing several – if [...]

Of course, it goes without saying that part of the joy of these multi-day music shindigs is unearthing new and exciting artists by accident. With so much talent on show, however, it's important to anticipate the artists that are expected to be highlights to ensure nothing gets missed. With a solid schedule having built up over the past week - a good proportion of which will hopefully be caught personally and recorded [...]
Recently nominated for three American Music awards including Artist of the Year, Nashville's The Kings of Leon will release a new in-concert 21-song DVD November 20: Live at 02 , filmed before 18,000 fans June 30 at London's 02 arena during the band's triumphant three-night sold out gig along their European tour. It's only fitting that the Kings decided on an international venue since the band broke through outside of the U.S. first: their last album Only By the Night entered the British charts at #1 and went on to become the third best-selling album [...]

There is never a shortage of shows in Philadelphia, and it makes it hard then, to choose between all of the great ones when they just so happen to fall upon one night. On Saturday, October 17th, 2009 Girl About Town's head spins whilst we choose between venues for the many live gigs happening this weekend. Sweden's award winning artist, Anna Ternheim will be opening for our favorites; Asobi Seksu and Loney, Dear at Johnny Brenda's . Anna, who is used to sell-out crowds in Sweden will be playing [...]
