Beck - "Harry Partch" ; The history of the musical feud dates back centuries probably, but in the last few decades it has really been the bearer of some terrific music at the hands of the hated on. This week Beck responded to all this Matt Friedberger (of The Fiery Furnaces) vs. Radiohead vs. Himself controversy with a song dedicated to late composer Harry Partch. Now that's not the same Harry Patch that Radiohead dedicated a song to. This little tune featuring snippets from Fiery Furnaces' songs and Partch's own composition structure really takes Friedberger to town. To [...]

Filed under: News , Book Club The young John Lydon was so brilliant, author Greil Marcus argued Thursday night during a presentation at Columbia University, that the iconic Sex Pistols singer, now 53, should be forgiven for appearing in British butter commercials. "I think John Lydon did so much to make the world a richer, more abstract, more contingent place -- and did more to raise the stakes of what people see as art -- that I don't care what he does to make [...]
I'm gearing up to see Devo on Friday and have been revisiting the classic era of synth-punk, a genre the band had very much to do with pioneering during their earlier years. The genre combines the intense, guitar-driven fury of punk rock with often sloppy and simplistic synth mashing. Though the instrumentation may be the same, synth-punk has little in common with new wave, the fluffier, more pop-driven counterpart. Synth-punk was often gritty, poorly recorded, nasty, and powerful as sin. With that in mind, let's touch upon a few genre classics, both new and old. [...]

Known for his highly literate lyrics on his solo work, along with his time spent in the Auteurs and Black Box Recorder, Luke Haines has a new album out called 21st Century Man . Jarvis Cocker's oddly priapic solo release this year, Further Complications , was mostly disappointing, but for those looking for a witty, smart and musical Cocker-like album for 2009, they should definitely check out Mr. Haines' new work. Neil Young wrote Southern Man as an anti-slavery missive about the American South, and with his new album, Haines [...]
The Faces now appear set to embark on a reunion tour in 2010, but not in the way one would probably hope for. Despite comments to the contrary, frontman Rod Stewart will not join former bandmates guitarist Ron Wood, keyboardist Ian McLagan and drummer Kenney Jones on any of the band's upcoming ventures, McLagan has confirmed to Billboard.com . "If we don't do it very soon, one of us is gonna check out," McLagan explaines. "I'm 64, for chrissakes! We've been waiting and waiting for Rod to say yes; now he's finally said [...]
Quietus : What do you think it was about the recording environment that turned Cut into such a great record? Ari Up : The Slits developed the Slits sound. To this day, no one sounds like us, no one. People trying to categorise the music has fucked us up over the years: "Oh, we can't label you, what are you?" It's... Slits! A totally new sound. We had no heroes. We had no one to look up to. It talks about Patti Smith in the book, but I didn't relate to [...]
by Andrew Frisicano Nouvelle Vague @ Irving Plaza ( more by Toby Tenenbaum ) Now [ Nouvelle Vague ] (comprised of Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux) has gone for something even more improbable. For "3," they take songs created by everyone from the synthy Soft Cell to the archtypically punky Sex Pistols and make them mosey in a rural American mode. Specifically, Nouvelle uses elements swiped from the southern and western part of the U.S., from country to folk. It [...]
In the music world, Dr. Dre must have the highest influence-per-album ratio this side of the Sex Pistols. He dropped The Chronic in 1992, 2001 in 1999 and Detox in…well, don't hold your breath. The man can be forgiven for turning his third album into hip-hop's Chinese Democracy though. After all, it takes time to produce practically every hip-hop hit of the past twenty years. Dr. Dre
THE SLITS ALBUM 'TRAPPED ANIMAL' OUT NOW - PLAYING LA, SAN FRANCISCO + NYC IN DECEMBER The Slits will be playing three very special shows this December in support of their first full-length album in over 25 years, Trapped Animal, which is out now! The Slits became a part of the punk pantheon with songs that even today continue to be meditations on alienation and angst. With Trapped Animal, The Slits remain the same genre bending band they were in their inception, still standing out from the rest of the pack. In the title track they [...]
Today I post an homage to the Japanese Fashion Dream Team aka the JDM Rat Pack that is Hiroshi Fujiwara (FRAGMENT, SOPH.), Jun Takahashi (UNDERCOVER, NOWHERE), Hikaru Iwanaga (BOUNTY X HUNTER) and Nobu Kitamura (HYSTERIC GLAMOUR). A reocurring theme in all of their designs is the heavy presence of punk rock, especially apparent in Hikaru's BOUNTY X HUNTER line (Mykal's favourite). Hiroshi Fujiwara has grown and his desings have naturally matured to a more casual aesthetic, though his approach can be considered unconventional, much like punk rock itself. His music has changed from thrash to collaborations with mister Slowhand himself, [...]

We understand there are probably some quotas involved in police work. But seriously, is there no sport left in law enforcement? Are you really going to pull over that Canadian good times garage rock duo with hippie tendencies and a predisposition to wear novelty costumes for drug possession? As it turns out, the answer is yes, they are, in a small town called Hopkinsville between the band's Nashville show and their St. Louis show. The whole thing sounds amusingly like a subplot from The Dukes Of Hazard. Regardless, the charges (not entirely disclosed at this point) caused King [...]
In an interview about his popular butter ads in the U.K., John Lydon claims that the money he made on the butter ads provided him with the funds he needed to relaunch Public Image Ltd., his post-punk band that is going to be on a reunion tour shortly. "Why are they questioning me?" he demanded. "What manual am I supposed to adopt? I'm promoting a British product which I'm very proud of. Anything I can do to help British industry is fine by me and in return you've got PiL." [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , UK Punk legend and reality TV star John Lydon has revealed that his upcoming tour with reformed post- Sex Pistols band Public Image Limited (PiL) is being funded with the money he made by starring in TV adverts for Country Life butter. Speaking to North London newspaper the Camden New Journal , Lydon said, "The money I got from that advert is the advance on the (PiL) tour. We live on a lucky end of a [...]

It isn't hard to get a great soundtrack when your movie is all about the music industry. Specifically the british music industry in the late 70's to the early 90's. 24 Hour Party People is a great film about the rise and fall and rise of Factory Records following the great Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan) on his raucous and wild adventures in the world of music and music business in Manchester,UK. This soundtrack totally captures and bottles up the insanity and tone of this time period. It is epic to say the least. The soundtrack is heavily Joy Division/New Order [...]

by Klaus Kinski As a youngster, my punk rock friend Bob was constantly trying to get me to listen to more than just metal. He succeeded in getting me into groups like Pegboy, Black Flag, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Samhain, The Misfits, Public Image Ltd. and the like. But two acts that really appealed to me at the time and ended up being the soundtrack to the summer of 1992 were The Descendents and [...]

In October of 1977, The Sex Pistols released their fourth and final single on their third label, Virgin Records after being dropped from EMI and A&M for being a dangerous liability. The single, "Holidays In The Sun" was inspired by a two week trip the band took to Berlin, and would be the lead track on their one and only LP that came out a few weeks later. Singer Johnny Rotten recalls: "Being in London at the time made us feel like we were trapped in a prison camp environment. There was hatred and [...]
