This time of year is always tough on the ears of music lovers. We're assaulted with a nonstop barrage of hackneyed holiday standards, irritating seasonal "satire," and a ceaseless stream of sad attempts at making Christmas music cool. Well, you need keep your head buried beneath a sound-absorbent pile of used Santa suits no longer, because we've mapped out a tune-a-day plan for you to keep a song in your heart throughout the 12 days of Christmas without having a coronary. Just don't expect any dewy-eyed odes to tinsel and mistletoe in this sonic Christmas stocking. [...]
Shane passes out, fan finds him.
Barclay Martin- "Miracle" (MP3) You don't want to sit or stand next to me at a concert. I'm an emotional guy and music often brings tears to my eyes. These embarrassing incidents occurred several times in 2009. I cried when Emmanuel Ax played Chopin. Tony Bennett giving it his all made me mist up. I cried as Shane MacGowan slurred his way through "The Old Man Drag." I wept watching Kris Kristofferson struggle to sing. Lots of people, myself included, were reduced to tears by Leonard Cohen's brilliance the other night. [...]
- the untouchables songs - The Pogues - A rainy night in Soho (1991) Prestate attenzione al video. La rarità sta nel fatto che, seppur avvolto nella penombra e non perfettamente a fuoco, uno Shane MacGowan tanto compassato ed elegante chansonnier è difficile trovarlo altrove.

Come one come all to the magnificent and frightening Voodoo Experience 2009 Halloween spooktacular held deep in the swampy bayous of New Orleans at City Park! From outrageous costumes to glowing praying mantises, this year's Halloween celebration drew in an outrageous number of people to catch some of this year's hottest acts. Fans braved the freezing rain, which hailed all throughout the first day, and even withstood the muddy after effects on Saturday and Sunday. And all but one small setback (K'NANN canceled his performance last minute on Saturday) made this an exciting and fun filled weekend [...]

It wasn't St. Patrick's Day but Thursday night sure felt like it - or something like a wild, drunken Irish party - as the legendary Pogues rolled into town to play at the House of Blues. This punk-Irish-rock unit hasn't visited Texas in 20 years but here they were in all their glory and best of all, they were led by dissipated frontman Shane MacGowan, singing and smoking and drinking and slurring right where he belongs. To see MacGowan in the flesh is to wonder how this man is alive at all. Obviously damaged by decades of boozing [...]

It does seem in Ireland that this year's Halloween is being celebrated like never before and I'm loving it. Here's an Irish Halloween mixtape! Some of the tunes are technically not written about Halloween but are included for atmospheric qualities. 1. And So I Watch You From Afar - Set Guitars To Kill 2. Ham Sandwich - Running Up That Hill [Live] 3. Pearse McGloughlin [...]

It's a good thing I wasn't drinking at last night's concert by the Pogues. Even without the assistance of streams of whiskey, I misted up as the bleak "Old Main Drag" concluded. I allowed a tear to slide down my cheek during the tender "A Rainy Night In Soho." Had I bellied up to the bar last night I might now be blogging behind bars. It was bittersweet. Part of me felt like a guilty enabler as I watched Shane MacGowan literally fall down drunk. But mostly I was just thrilled [...]

Check another one off of my bucket list - I have now seen the Pogues . Last night's show at the Marquee Theater in Tempe was their first stop in Arizona. Ever. And it was my first chance to catch a band I've long admired - a legendary British band masterfully playing Irish folk music since 1982. A band fronted for most of their years by the notoriously erratic and often [always?] inebriated Shane MacGowan. This was the 7th show of a relatively short swing across the West and central U.S., and reports in [...]
Shane MacGowan is unquestionably a hugely respected figure in modern music: as The Pogues frontman he brought together Irish music and punk, and more importantly lent his own particular voice and lyricism to music. That's all well and good, but two of our favorite Shane moments here at HAD are perhaps two of the lesser known - we figured we'd share. The first is "Haunted", a 1995 duet with Sinead O'Connor off of MacGowan's 1995 record The Snake (which deserves a full listen if you haven't already). The tune is [...]

The Pogues play Roseland this Sunday. The show is sold out. Still, you might wanna read this Q&A between Jay Horton and Spider Stacy. -Ed. The Pogues never should've existed. Not in 1982, not forcing tin whistle and accordion on the pogo-ing faithful. And it seems faintly miraculous the famed Celtic punk outfit's core members stayed together for nine years and five albums. Late-to-the-party devotees (the Pogues, all spit and sentimentality, have never been a young man's band) flocked to increasingly dissipated performances by former vocalist Shane MacGowan and gave spin to his bandmates' museless vamps. [...]

Richmond Fontaine comes clean and releases its best album yet. The bar side of North Portland's Overlook Restaurant, with its stained-glass porthole windows and white-haired waitresses, makes a nice backdrop for an interview. And Richmond Fontaine frontman Willy Vlautin, with a day's worth of stubble and a button-up shirt, blends nicely into a menagerie of slot machines and working-class folks on lunch break. But an hour into our conversation at the Overlook—wherein Vlautin, sipping a Bud Light, covers everything from his mother's death to the genius of the Pogues' Shane [...]

Late-to-the-party devotees (the Pogues, all spit and sentimentality, have never been a young man's band) flocked to increasingly dissipated performances by former vocalist Shane MacGowan and gave spin to his bandmates' museless vamps. The ever-growing cult of the Pogues traded out-of-print albums and rumors of bootlegs and thought not at all about the chances the band would get back together: Odds of [...]
Not sure the right description of the Gavin Friday and Friends event at Carnegie Hall last night. An eclectic mix of performers for sure. Like Gavin, it ranged from punk rock to cabaret. The guests ranged from sober to not very. It worked, it didn't work, the girl next to me reading her program wanted to know who this 'Goo- Jee' is anyway, the security guards may or may not have been slightly scared when Dik Evans began making a piercing noise with his guitar and Guggi and Gavin stomped around the stage screamingsnarling at the crowd and each other. [...]
Gavin & Courtney @ Carnegie Hall ( aphrodite-in-nyc ) Rufus, Scarlett & Gavin @ Carnegie Hall ( aphrodite-in-nyc ) Gavin & U2 @ Carnegie Hall ( aphrodite-in-nyc ) Sunday, October 4th was the "Hal Willner Presents: An Evening with Gavin Friday & Friends" show at Carnegie Hall. It seems that the only concerts I've attended since moving to New York City are highfalutin, high-cost events that take place at ornate and historic venues. Because here I am, about to review the show I saw last night at Carnegie Hall. My friend was generous enough to offer me an extra pass that he had to see An Evening With Gavin Friday and Friends . Featuring guest appearances by everyone from U2 to Lydia Lunch to Laurie Anderson, the night was also a benefit for RED , with a portion of the proceeds going toward helping eradicate [...]
Last night Carnegie Hall hosted the biggest assortment of megastars this side of the Orpheum for a (RED)NIGHTS charity show, benefiting the Global Fund 's efforts against the African AIDS epidemic. The night was billed as "Hal Willner Presents: An Evening With Gavin Friday and Friends," and it turns out that the erstwhile Virgin Prunes frontman Friday has a great friend in Bono, and by extension, some of the music world's most iconic faces. It was the night of a thousand collaborations, some likely (Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson), some not so much (Rufus Wainwright, Scarlett Johansson, [...]
