Arresting, intense folk-rock Americana Lissie Maurus is a folk-rock singer from the southwest Illinois border town of Rock Island. Although there's a rustic Midwestern edge to her Americana, her transplantation to Los Angeles, and national and international gigs have elevated her music beyond coffee-house strumming. Her voice pulls you in close with confessional introductions and then attacks with arresting outbursts of emotion. The exclamation of "danger will follow me now everywhere I go, angels will fall on me and take me to my home" finds her bending back from the microphone to make room [...]
SOUNDS FAMILYRE RECORDS RELEASING ORTOLAN DEBUT FULL-LENGTH TIME ON A STRING ON MARCH 9, 2010 A hot minivan barreling down the highway, filled to the brim with siblings, sleeping bags, and travel checkers sets—this is the setting for a decades-old American tradition upheld by millions: arguing over the radio dial until consensus is happily found at that hallowed institution, the oldies station. Thus begins the story of Ortolan, four young women from Southern New Jersey with music-loving, art-teacher parents, devoted to each other in laughter, bickering, love, and play. Sisters Stephanie (16), Brianna (18), Lara (20), [...]
Some of you may know Skye Edwards from her role as the lead singer in Morcheeba and others may remember her from her great 2006 album, Mind How You Go . Suddenly, out of the blue, she's back with a new one this week. It's called Keeping Secrets - that's the cover image above, sort of a cross between [...]

First it was her cover of Tomorrow from the musical Annie, now Sia has done it again. Yesterday Sia gave her fans a first taster of the sound of her new album, to be titled We Are Born, by leaking a track to her Twitter followers. "You've Changed" will probably ring some bells with you as it was released by Lauren Flax, featuring vocals from Sia, earlier this year. But as Sia herself said, she liked it so much she decided to record her own version for her new album. [...]

Ely Guerra proves once again that it is okay to take years in between albums as long as the wait merits the quality of the music. She is no longer signed on EMI, instead, she's releasing under Honey Company, her new (and probably improvised) record label. Lotofire is one of my favorite alternative albums ever and her jump into pop ( Sweet & Sour, Hot y Spicy ) was very pleasant too, so yeah, I can't wait for Hombre Invisible . And it's starting on the right foot as the first single titled "Stranger" is exquisite; it [...]

KISS has been covered by hundreds of artists in different languages from all over the world on dozens of tribute albums. E very genre of music has an ideal listening environment. Classical is best heard at a smyphony. Arena rock should be heard at, well, at a large arena. Electronic music? Nothing beats a dance party. But whether you're a club person, a bar junkie or a house party lover, you've probably encountered a lot of obnoxious people during your nights out. Below are nine of the people we hate most in no particular order. Got any good ideas for future lists you'd like to see? Send them over . [...]

This Swede Lykke Li is one smart chick, her cover choices have been pretty drastic, Tribe's "Can I Kick It" and Rick Ross' "Hustlin" now she's goes retro and goes in, ever so gently on The Shirelles classic. She also contributed the ethereal "Possibility" to the New Moon soundtrack. Cheers to I Smell Like Money . Lykke Li - "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (The Shirelles cover)" -mp3 Lykke Li - "Possibility" -mp3

Hey folks, just a quick note to let you know we'll be liveblogging the American Music Awards this Sunday night (ABC, 8/7central — we'll be here for the Pacific time zone broadcast) so please come by as we bow down to/bitch about who won what, who blew whom off the stage and who ripped off Lady Gaga's look most blatantly. A few things we should all reasonably expect to see: :: Janet Jackson opening yet another awards show with an eight-minute medley of her hits, followed by her getting winded after repeat visits to the [...]

Back in 1997 Anthony Lovett and Matt Maranian wrote and published what eventually became my favorite Los Angeles guidebook. That book's name was (and is) LA Bizarro . A few years ago on this website I talked to Matt about the original book's undertaking ( fun interview with Matt here ). Since that time the two authors have now revised, updated and significantly expanded that original tome, and their collective output was published by Chronicle Books just this fall. In the 2009 updated edition of LA Bizarro (available at the time of this [...]
I wrote this post over a year ago - in August 2008, to be exact - after I got a cease and desist for posting a song by a girl named Gabriella Cilmi. For whatever reason, I didn't post this. Maybe I figured some mysterious record company man in a long black coat with scars on his face would whack me in the parking lot if I did. Not so worried about that now. And, if you don't mind me noting: as of today - November 20, 2009 - I haven't heard a lot [...]

A Classic Education A Classic Education are a six-piece band from Bologna, Italy whose epic melodramas seem to attracting much attention. They played Indietracks in 2008 and are frequent visitors to London and further afield. Following a trip to CMJ in New York in October, they're back in the UK this month: they play at the Lexington on 26 November and the Buffalo Bar the following night. They have released two records: an [...]
This is where I talk about one of my favorite things, television. Some critics are saying that 30 Rock has lost it's touch this season. Those critics are crazzzy. If anything, think that it just took a little longer this year for the show to hit it's stride. You may remember last season was a bit doubtful (read: too cameo-heavy) till 5 or 6 episodes in and then it never let up. Furthermore, I think a person with any sense would realize that with last night's episode "Sun Tea", 30 Rock is [...]

Rita J: Artist Workshop Chicago rapper/singer Rita J releases her debut album, Artist Workshop via All Natural Records. Rita J reminds me of Queen Latifa . The girl is multi-talent; when she raps she commands the track but she also has a very soulful singing voice. She combines both talents on some tracks creating R&B tinged hip hop; on other tracks she lets her raps do the talking. Right from the get-go its apparent that Rita J is bringing something unique to hip hop. The album's opening track, "Introduction" is half rapping [...]
Here's a video to get your Friday night party going. Chicago's Kid Sister finally saw the release of her debut album, Ultraviolet this week. The single Right Hand Hi has been out for awhile and is very, very catchy. She's playing with Flosstradamus (featuring her brother and DJ J2K) at House of Blues the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 25). The video is from a show in Los Angeles last month. [...]

In case you haven't heard, Tennille will be one of our special guest hosts at tomorrow's Dimes and Dozens . She'll be joining VIPJ during his set to perform some joints, and to get you caught up to speed we have some of the NYC to Chicago songstress' music below. Hit the jump to check out the Cool Kids assisted "Jump Rope" and her solo joint "Ass Made of Diamonds". See her live tomorrow night at Lava Lounge 1270 N. Milwaukee.

Tila Tequila went insane for a minute, stripped her clothes off, and started dancing with a gun. And she also said that she didn't want to put Shawne Merriman on blast, but did just that when she said that he drugs young women. The video is after the jump because it's NSFW - or much else... She also claims that [...]
Robert Pattinson was on Ellen DeGeneres' show, and talked about how one fan gave him her baby. He joked that he kept the kid and even renamed him. All throughout the video, he comes off as shy and introverted and the fans are just wildly screaming for him. He mentioned the incident involving the fan who stripped for him and how he felt terrible about it. In [...]
