Our week of Fall Vinyl Giveaways come to a close with a rather cool compilation of artists paying tribute to the scene that was Greenwich Village in the '60's and early '70's featuring Shelby Lynne, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Hornsby, Rachael Yamagata, Amos Lee, Sixpence None the Richer, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Marshall Crenshaw, Rocco Deluca, Cowboy Junkies, John Oates, The Duhks, Los Lobos, Cary Brothers, Jesse Malin, and Mikey Powell. Says Susan Rotolo author of the recent bestseller "A Freewheelin' Time: A Memoir of Greenwich Village in [...]

Inevitably, a love of coverage leads to a constant, ever-vigilant search for thoughtful, well-crafted reinterpretation. I spend hours each week mining full albums for the hidden cover song, and scanning MySpace and email inbox for the promotional, the one-off acoustic in-studio radio track, and the otherwise unreleased singleton, and the endless discovery is eminently worth the pursuit. But there's no question that tribute albums are the cover lover's bread and butter. I gather these things in like truffles, and hold a special place for them in my heart and in my [...]

Paris photo by Stuck In Customs We know 2001 as a demode Michael Bay movie come to life. Literally, a few hours when we thought civilization was ending, or at least that is what it seemed like here in Washington. I don't like documentaries about that day because they always begin with how pretty the weather was and how la dee da... and then you know what is coming and you can't do anything about it. [...]
The classic folk songs of Greenwich Village in the 60's are reimagined by a fine collective of artists on The Village: A Celebration of the Music of Greenwich Village arriving November 3 via 429 Records. Tackling 17 songs from acoustic pioneers the likes of Bob Dylan (represented wi th six tracks), Eric Andersen, John Sebastian, Tim Buckley, Fred Neil, Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon is a who's who of adult/alt performers such as Lucinda Williams, Bruce Hornsby , Shelby Lynne and Rachael Yamagata [...]

S ince this list is all about the best singles of the past decade, it doesn't recognize some of my favorite albums of the '00s from which either no singles were released or from which the wrong ones were released. Or in the case of Robyn and Keane, the albums soar more as complete works than on the strength of individual songs. Let us take a moment to give props where they are due. A few honorable mentions: Shelby Lynne I Am Shelby Lynne (2000) Sade [...]
Apologies for yet another repost tonight, folks; at the eleventh hour, I find myself unable to shake a new bout of high-pitched tinnitus and ear-blockage, this time in my left ear. Listening to music is once again like trying to hear the good stuff underwater, and surrounded by keening whales. Making claims about music right now would be plumb dishonest. Spending the afternoon at the doctor's office - a visit which involved snaking a very long tube all the way through my sinuses and up to the [...]
When songs talk to each other magic happens...

Summer is in full swing, the sun isnt shinning, the clouds are there, the rain is being an absolute c*nt and showering us at every opportunity. All this creates a perfect environment for some serious wonkage. Bass heavy tunes are occupying the majority of this thunder and tidy lil influences steaming in from all directions. Big shout to Toddla T and Diplo for bringing the reggae vibe in. Soo nice. Plastician's new remix of Salt Air by Chew Lips, got some summer to it. Perhaps it needs a lil bit more wonk? Chew Lips [...]

My teenage obsession with REM means I've always had a soft spot for their home state and thanks to my 'American cousin' John Barner living there I've been able to visit a few times. I vividly remember my first trip to Georgia , traveling along the kudzu lined highway in a Greyhound bus, listening to a tape of Murmur on my Walkman and being reminded of all the weird Southern images conjured up in those early REM songs. Georgia has inspired hundreds of [...]

I could post dozens of songs just about Los Angeles or San Francisco before even thinking about the rest of the state. Instead these are just a handful of my favourite California songs. By all means point out my omissions in the comments below and I'll tell you if it's a song I'd already thought of. MP3: Tom Waits - Goin' Out West The male version of Naomi Watts' character in Mulholland Drive . There's no way that this ex-con turned wannabe actor is ever going to [...]

Carnival Saloon regulars will know that my first post of the new year was about chicken songs and the second was the start of my musical tour of every American state which began in Alabama . So, imagine how I felt yesterday when I discovered I actually own a song called Alabama Chicken and didn't mention it in either post! I believe there's always room for more chicken so here's that song plus some more premium poultry. MP3: Sean Hayes - Alabama Chicken I [...]

Florida is one of those states that divides people. Among its detractors are anyone who sunburns easily and all those who voted for Al Gore in 2000 while fans of the Sunshine State include Jewish retirees and more than a million British tourists each year. These three tracks take in both viewpoints. As usual if there's a song you love that I've not included do let me know. I'll soon be compiling a list of ones that got away. MP3: Vic Chesnutt - Florida [...]

World's Greatest Music writes... Your Lies and Leavin' should have been huge hits for Shelby Lynne when she was first signed to Mercury. She was kind of Norah Jones meets Duffy. Shelby's last record was a covers album of songs immortalised by Dusty Springfield, plus one new composition. You can hear tracks on Shelby's rather neglected MySpace site . One Dusty classic Shelby doesn't cover is No Easy Way Down, perhaps because Norah Jones also covered it recently. If you don't own any Dusty albums [...]

Tons of pre-SXSW, national touring bands in town this week. Last week I went back to Largo for the Radar Bros. and Lambchop. That room sounds great. Still no liquor license, but you can run down the street for beer or wine and really confuse the people at Real Food Daily. I've got some tickets to give away for Richard Swift this Friday at Spaceland. Email me (dukeufo at gmail) with the name of your favorite Swift song. The contest closes Thursday at 5:00 PM. Winners will be notified [...]

A Musical Tour Around the United States In January I started a series of posts called State Songs with six tracks about Alabama . I am taking a hugely enjoyable trip through all 50 states in alphabetical order trying to add at least one more each week. I'll be updating this page with links to every state I 'visit' on my musical tour with a list of the artists featured. You'll have to read the posts to hear which particular tracks I've chosen. [...]
