The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]
Death Cab For Cutie forsangeren Ben Gibbards hyggeprojekt The Postal Service rendte med 2. pladsen, blandt andet foran to [...]
Notes upon listening to Yo Gabba Gabba: Music Is . . . Awesome five times in the past two days: - I had no idea what Yo Gabba Gabba was until the promo copy arrived in my mailbox on Wednesday. My cluelessness is due to the fact that (a) pretty much all my TV viewing nowadays is Hulu -based, (b) I don't have kids, and (c) I don't do drugs. However, after looking at the album cover and doing some quick internet researching - which mainly consisted of this article from Slate [...]
Welcome to day two of my favorite albums of the aughts. I should remind everyone that these are MY favorite albums of the past decade, which coincidentally means they might not be the same as yours. Compiling this list was an arduous task and honestly it could be different every single day depending on my mood. It just so happens that this is the final product of months of work and is what goes out on the internets for everyone to see. Anyways I hope you enjoy and maybe even stumble upon something you haven't heard in awhile. [...]

"In the Know" is a recurring series on Stranger Dance that features the latest and greatest MP3s circling the web. If you think you've got a tip we should know about email Peter . His Clancyness - "Misinterpret My Words" Until a couple of days ago I had never heard of His Clancyness . I'm not sure why because "Misinterpret My Words" is easily one of the best tunes I've heard [...]

As you know by now, we at NPR Music sent out a series of questions to people in the music, arts and entertainment communities. We wanted to get a sense of people's thoughts and feelings pertaining to the last decade in music, and what their thoughts were about the future. One question we asked was: What is the one song, movement or artist that sums up the decade for you, and why? Our respondents had a variety of answers, from Kanye West to M.I.A. to Beirut. Please add your [...]

Vertical Horizon spent the last ten years getting a first-class education in the vagaries of the music business. After releasing three DIY albums, they were snapped up by RCA for their multi-platinum breakthrough, Everything You Want , whose title track became a #1 hit. Label difficulties resulted in delays and a lack of support for their 2003 follow-up, Go , but Vertical Horizon has finally re-emerged, unveiling their first album in six years, Burning the Days . Having reached high enough on the music-biz ladder to touch the sun and get their fingers burned, they're back [...]

Qualche sorpresa. Un gruppo inglese (i Libertines ) è stato scalzato dal podio da [...]
Music brag NME has crowned The Strokes' debut album 'This is It' as the best album of the decade. As the naughties come to a close NME (and a long list of music experts) voted for what they thought are the best 100 albums of the decade. With the concluding list spanning artists from Jay-Z to Johnny Cash and a few unexpected ones in between. The New York rockers beat off the likes of Primal Scream's 'XTRMNR' and 'Up The Bracket' by The Libertines to take the holy grail. Mike Skinner must be [...]

Music brag NME has crowned The Strokes' debut album 'This is It' as the best album of the decade. If that isn't enough encouragement for the boys to get cracking with their next album release then I don't know what is. Here's the weird thing about the British: In general, they have much better taste in music than Americans. While we waste our time on interchangeable pop stars, they're singing the praises of Gossip's Beth Ditto. But their likes and dislikes are very particular - and, in general, they seem to love the kinds of semi-mainstream/semi-indie bands that become one-hit wonders or just never make a huge splash in the U.S. and then fairly quickly fall out of favor with the music-geek set. For example: NME has just named its #1 album of the '00s... and it's [...]
Pitchfork may have usurped everyone with their best-of-the-decade list, but the floodgates are open now and many other publications are printing their nominations. Today (Nov. 17), the NME has produced a list of the albums they consider to be the best of the decade, and there are very few surprises. The paper was one of the earliest champions of the Strokes when they emerged at the beginning of the decade, and Is This It is their predictable number 1 choice. The list is male dominated and indie-centric—Jay Z's The Blueprint [...]

Yet another list from a UK Music Magazine. NME always prided itself on being the cool UK Magazine, well since it changed its name from New Musical Express , and since Melody Maker disappeared along with Cliff Richard's shadows. So what's their list of the Best albums of the decade like? Keep reading. 50. MIA - Arular 49. Muse - Absolution 48. Walkmen - Bows and Arrows 47. Brendan Benson - Lapalco 46. Delgados - The Great Eastern This list starts so much better than many others. It's great to [...]

I've only seen Yo Gabba Gabba once-partially because of the intriguing musicians they've had-and even though I've "outgrown" children's programming I still found myself humming along with their catchy, and educational, soundtrack. With artist appearances from The Roots, The Shins and Of Montreal it's good to know that the #1 children's show is at least exposing decent musicians rather than Hannah Montana or the Jonas Bros. The Yo Gabba Gabba crew will actually be performing live at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco (November 28th) and Filter has given us two pairs of tickets to hand [...]

What's the appeal of The Walkmen ? It can't be the guitars that echo, or the lo-fi ambiance, or the depressing lull that seems to resonate within every song. It can't be. Right? Don't get me wrong. They've yet to put out a disappointing effort. Everything from 2002's Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone to last year's remarkable You & Me oozes with delectable indie cadence, but it's not the same "cadence" as say that of The Shins, or even Spoon. It certainly doesn't explain last night's sold out crowd [...]

What a pleasure it was to be able to see Dolores O'Riordan and The Cranberries perform for the first time in six years at Rams Head Live ! I was shocked to see that they were reuniting for a tour, and even more shocked to see that they were starting their tour in Baltimore! The band played a 17 song set, ending with a 4 song encore that closed the show with classic single, "Dreams." Their performance and sound were both amazing; Dolores herself even commented that they [...]
