Shocking Pinks are a band formed by Nick Harte and based in New Zealand. Dream pop? How about just cool!!! The Shocking Pinks' gigging lineup has featured over sixteen members and various line-up changes since its inception in late 2003, often due to personal or creative differences within the band. Every time I hear the Shins, I'm reminded of New Zealand's Flying Nun records. One of the world's hallowed indies, Flying Nun is home to a number of NZ chartbusters. A fair dose of selected FN recordings have ever been licensed for the US and Europe. A couple of acts have received major label distribution, but few have toured the States extensively. So, fanzine-reading, import-buying, obsessive lo-fi geeks were pretty much the target market here. Namedropping kiwi pop music seems to be somewhat in vogue these days. No Age, Jay Reatard, Bradford Cox, Steven Malkmus and Girl Talk have all cited an influence from some of the bands on this mix (In fact Malkmus made his appreciation slightly more obvious by covering The Verlaines 'Death and the Maiden').
