Back In Business: Beat City Radio #329 August 19, 2009

Those Darlins "The Whole Damn Thing"
Here we are, facing the LCD display armed only with Diet Dr. Pepper and Orbit chewing gum, culled from the discount bin at the local Jackson's convenience store. It's some months after promising a new post, and we're ready to get back into this gig. Word of mouth tells me that the fan-base of Beat City Radio has been steadily growing and old listeners are loyal ones. One of the biggest complaints I've received is the lack of online playlists and podcasts. So, let's give 'er another shot and kick this thing off the ground. Below you'll [...]

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Upstairs At Whelan's

This really shouldn't work. The music of Ariel Pink is designed for back bedrooms the stuff of creepily familiar dark fantasy, the disconnected voice of putrefied innocence amongst a decaying Castle Greyskull and a fungus filled Rainbow Brite pencil case. He should have his fingers firmly stuck on the play/record button somewhere not wrapped around a microphone in a packed sweaty venue but on this rainy eve in Dublin we have entered a parallel universe where Pink is the prince of paranoid pop. He howls, he croons, he sighs and slides tangling himself in the microphone lead, his [...]

Videos: Shooting Spires in Vienna

Shooting Spires - At Last At Least / THEY SHOOT MUSIC
Shooting Spires (the solo project of BJ Warshaw from Parts & Labor ) made a trip to Austria. During the trip, he decided to visit his grandmother's birth place, a little apartment complex in Vienna. They Shoot Music filmed the visit as well as BJ playing "A Million Drops" and "At Last At Least." The songs are stripped down to as little instrumentation as possible and this is possibly the first time ever you get to really hear BJ's voice without the wall of sound that usually accompanies it. Amazing and intimate. The videos below are [...]

an interview w/ Dan Friel, pics from New Years Eve

an interview w/ Dan Friel, pics from New Years Eve here's some new pictures & tour dates with a sort of old interview (that I'd rather post than throw away) (hope you don't mind).... --- words by Black Bubblegum , photos by Lori Baily Dan Friel @ Cake Shop, NYC - New Years Eve (Dec 31, 2008) ATP NY (2008) (think all the way back to September for a second) was littered with luminaries. On The Cover Interview - The Parts And Labor Of Parts & Labor

The Pool Trailer
Words by Derek Evers Photos by Nate Dorr It would be presumptuous of me – or anyone for that matter – to assume that Parts & Labor founding members B.J. Warsaw and Dan Friel could have envisioned the twists and turns that have accompanied the band and its line-up over its five-plus years of existence. As things have progressed, members, and subsequently sounds, have changed, leaving B.J. and Dan as the only parts of Parts & Labor that have endured. The labor is one of love, and one that has seen Warsaw and Friel [...]

Knob Twiddlers and Pedal Pushers

After noticing Parts & Labor featured on the front page here at Uncensored Interview, it got me thinking about other knob twiddlers and pedal pushers. So in the same way I approached the Smell Scene and sampling , I will be taking a bite out of the noise scen-or at least the pop side of the noise scene. DAN FRIEL / SHOOTING SPIRES / NOVELLER It only makes sense to start this off with the side projects from [...]

Dan Friel - 2008 Tour Dates (CS tonight), EVR Fest pics

Dan Friel - 2008 Tour Dates (CS tonight), EVR Fest pics photos by Chris La Putt For a guy just sitting there pressing buttons on his home-made lap-based contraption, Dan Friel manages to put on a super satisfying show. His music speaks for itself, and if you have a good view, you can try and figure out what he's doing. Tonight (9/16) he's at Cake Shop in NYC. Recently he played the side stage at the East Village Radio Fest by the South Street Seaport. More pictures from [...]
